Title: Louisa Harriett Hazell
Post by: Braydizz on Monday 23 June 25 05:59 BST (UK)
Hi all,

I'm trying to pick up the trail of my Great Aunt, Louisa Harriett Hazell

Known details:

DOB: 01 Dec 1864 Chelsea, London, England
Emigrated to Australia: Departed London on the Star of Bengal bound for Melbourne on 23 Apr 1874. Arrived 14 Jul 1874.

Her father died onboard so her and her brother were classed as wards of the state upon arrival in Melbourne. Newspaper articles indicate that they faced Sandridge Police Court numerous times charged as 'neglected children'.

I have been able to visit the PROV office and look at her record, which I have attached below.

This record indicates she was discharged from a home in Geelong in late 1879. but I haven't been able to find any records post this date. Any information that could be shared would be very appreciated!

This woman   had a cousin called Charles Stokes HAZELL

Her misconduct with this cousin brought about a divorce petition.

The whole sorry divorce saga. She was an English woman and in this item had a birthdate of round 1868

Ettie Louisa SCOTT also mentioned as a caterer in this dispute in 1911, which also mentions the skating rink.

In 1926 Charles HAZELL and Ettie Louisa SCOTT are called brother and sister.  ::)
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/3730214

Not sure if it is mentioned in the items Sue gave - James William HAZELL is Ettie Louisa SCOTT's brother.
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/213032990

Modified - sorry, reading it again, James William HAZELL is brother of the co-respondent, so brother to Charles HAZELL.

I can’t quite find it now but Charles Stokes Hazell has been mentioned as a relative of Benjamin Hazell.
Previous thread I think.

Thanks for all the information! I believe the woman in the articles to be Harriet Edith Louisa Hazell, who would have been the cousin of Louisa Harriet Hazell. Harriet Edith had brothers Charles and James William.

But you have the death date for Harriet Edith Louisa Hazell, shown in your tree snip as 1966.
I have given the death of Ettie above 1931.

I'm not following you thinking here.
Sorry

Have you considered/eliminated this Louisa Hazell (formerly of Victoria and no parents for her mentioned)
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/238948570
THORNHILL-HAZELL— A wedding took place in All Saints' Church of England, Canowindra on Wednesday March 5, Rev. Robert Douglas being the officiating clergyman, when Louisa Hazell, of Walli, formerly of Victoria, was married to George W. Thornhill son of Mr. G. W. Thornhill, of Walli. The bride, who was given away by Mr. Lashford, wore a pretty cream silk robe and wreath and veil, and Miss Louisa Thurtell acted as bridesmaid. The happy couple drove to the residence of the bridegroom's parents at Walli, thence to their new home at Woodstock.

There is a death notice in the Sydney Morning Herald for a Louisa THORNHILL on 23 Feb 1983, died on 21 Feb aged 90 of Manly - children's names include some that are born to George And Louisa THORNHILL in Canowindra/Cowra. Most likely this death:
Louisa THORNHILL (4280/1983) , only mother's name given on the index - Hannah.

George THORNHILL seems to have died in Canowindra in 1971.

You will have noted the mother's surname on the death I have given for Ettie.

SCOTT Ettie Louise
Mother Louise MERRET
Father HAZELL Thomas
At FOOTSCRAY
Aged 60
1931
14136/1931

amondg in previous thread https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=891872.msg7659132#msg7659132 Reply #7 gives a list of children to MERRETT /HAZELL union.
Note Benjamin's second name was Thomas.

A lot of coincidences there.

You need to download the marriage certificate to SCOTT

Having just read 2 digitised documents relating to Ettie , I see...

Will-
Her substantial estate bequeathed totally to her cousin Charles HAZELL. In the event of his predeceasing her, to several large Melb hospitals.

Divorce proceedings.
There was no issue of the Scott marriage due to no sexual relationships due to Scott having "some physical defect"

That Ettie was born in Chelsea England. Year about 1867
Charles Hazell came from America.

As suggested, I have purchased the marriage certificate for Ettie Louise Hazell and James Andrew Scott. It lists her as being born in Chelsea, England with parents of Benjamin Thomas Hazell and Annie Meritt. Based on the evidence, I believe that this is her and she has altered her name.

Ettie was often used as a familiar for Harriett
