Title: 3 Central Buildings, Llandudno Junction
Post by: anneelaine on Sunday 22 June 25 00:30 BST (UK)
Hello,  3 Central Buildings, Llandudno Junction, in 1921? I think it was the old Hotpoint place. I had family living here in 1921
Thanks.

I’m assuming that you want to know where Central Buildings were.

My research suggests that Central Buildings is the former name of the block of buildings now 165-175 Conway Road.

First of all the sequence of 1921 records is:
Oswald Road
St Margarets Road
Central Buildings
Ronald Road
Glanmorfa Terrace
Riverview Terrace
Glanmorfa Farm

Although this doesn't establish an exact location, it does define the general area. The modern 165-175 Conway Road form the block between the junctions with Oswald Road and with Ronald Avenue.

Unfortunately there are no 25 inch maps at NLS for Llandudno Junction to tie this down any further.

Newspaper references to Central Buildings begin in 1903, suggesting that they were built around that time. In that year there is this advert indicating that the properties at Central Buildings consisted of shops with houses (presumably upstairs). Notice also that other lots in the sale from a single bankrupt owner are located in Oswald Road and Ronald Road.

There are many later newspaper adverts mentioning business for sale in Central Buildings up to the 1950s. The block on Conway Road fits the description of shops with dwellings.

I think this is fairly definitive:

Perhaps someone who knows the area may have more information, however, the latest mention in newspapers I can see of Central Buildings Llandudno Junction is 11 Oct 1951 when a shop was charged with selling nylons above the maximum price.

Modified to add:
Actually another advertisement for a place to rent on 6 March 1952.

The buildings are still there at 165-175 Conway Road.

Where was this factory?

The Hotpoint factory was located about a quarter of a mile to the east of Central Buildings (which are now 165-175 Conway Road). Central Buildings was unaffected by the Hotpoint factory development.

The first newspaper mentions of Hotpoint at Llandudno Junction are in 1953. The article here from a modern newspaper:

https://www.dailypost.co.uk/business/lost-giants-north-wales-industry-12731517

says that the factory opened in the 1950s. It also states that since it closed in 1992...

Quote
part of the land in Llandudno Junction was bought by the Welsh Government with its North Wales offices built on the site. Remaining land has became a major car retail plaza - featuring brands like VW and Audi.

This links to a 1950s map of the factory overlaid on a modern map confirming this:

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=17.3&lat=53.28330&lon=-3.79770&layers=258&b=osm&o=100

This map view shows the situation in 1933
https://maps.nls.uk/view/102350915#zoom=5.3&lat=4425&lon=3630&layers=BT

This map revised 1938 and published 1949 is the most recent map without the factory shown
https://maps.nls.uk/view/102180228#zoom=5.5&lat=1941&lon=4678&layers=BT

And this revised 1948 and published 1953 is the first map with the factory shown:
https://maps.nls.uk/view/101606112#zoom=5.4&lat=4599&lon=3565&layers=BT

Note however that the Daily Post article mentions that the Hotpoint factory took over a WWII aircraft parts factory, so it is possible that the site was developed before the 1938/1949 map with the existence of the site being a secret.

A former 'not very local' chipping in here. Following on from the above comments, 3 Central Buildings is currently '169 Newsagents' on Conway Road according to Streetview. Despite being bypassed by the A55, it is still on a fairly busy main road. I can't see any reason for it to have ever been connected to Hotpoint so I think we have a case of chinese whispers here which started out as 'near' Hotpoint. (Nearer than the Hotpoint Social Club which was just off the main road further along on the same side as Central Buildings) Half the residents of the junction worked at Hotpoint at one time or another. Perhaps the shop owner at one time worked there as well?
