Hello, hopefully someone would be able to help me to decipher some text that i am struggling with. It is the Abode/Street Name On the 1871 Census for Newcastle, All Saints district. Page 25 of 39.
This is the earliest potential census record i can find for my GG Grandmother. Jane Canning born approx 1855 Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire. Her mother is Maria Canning. Surname is spelt Canning from my Great Grandfather Reuben Louis McDonald's birth certificate. However there seems to be variations on this eg. Cannon. Any support with tracking the family down prior to 1880 would be greatly appreciated as i am still learning how to utilise sources properly.
The text i can partially read says " Travellers ___ " potentially. I have attached a small screenshot rather than the full census record to hopefully help.
Kind regards

Thankyou so much! You made that seem so easy :)
Do you have any idea what ‘Travellers Entry’ could mean? Could that suggest they are not living in a building but perhaps a sort’ve encampment?
Thankyou

Looking at the description of the enumeration district on page 1 I’d suggest it was some sort of small lane or court.
There are several mentions of it in old newspapers including one in 1878 describing it as containing tenement buildings.

Shaun J has found some of this, but here goes:
The newspaper mention from 1864 quoted below matches well with the enumerator's route in the sense that there are various Pandon place names.
Unfortunately this area of Newcastle is poorly covered in maps at NLS, with a huge gap between the 6 inch map of 1858 and the revised town plan of 1894. By the time of the latter map the All Saints area had been redeveloped and many of these places were gone. For example, at FindMyPast address search, New Pandon Street disappears after 1871.
However, Pandon Bank still exists today. Here is a map view with the early 6 inch map overlaid on a modern street map. On the old map Pandon Bank is unlabelled but aligns with the large 'A' of the All Saints label.
That's as close as I have been able to get to Travellers' Entry

20 August 1864: Newcastle Daily Chronicle

In an article from the Newcastle Evening Chronicle linked below I found a map from ~1851 which had Pandon Bank and also New Pandon labelled. Here is a section of the map, Pandon Bank is just right of centre.

I found a map of the area dating from 1876, possibly linked to the redevelopment of the area. The map is from the Newcastle Libraries Collection, but has no copyright. The full map is linked below and I am attaching a detail. Travellers Entry is labelled just to the west of the 'on' of Pandon Bank'.

Thankyou so much for this Trish! I didn’t have this record and have been trying to find out more about Maria Canning nee Mayens? Brilliant! I am so grateful.
I would absolutely love to find out more, there are suggestions of Northern European ancestry through a DNA test. The surname is quite Germanic, but I wouldn’t know the next steps in figuring out where she originates from.
Thankyou again.

Your welcome.
I think buying the M/C is your next step.
Dont be surprised if the surname is Mearns.
The 1856 Marriage Reg is the only entry at all in Lincs for Mayens
Plenty of Mearns.

Yes looks like Jane born and reg before Marriage;

Trish :)
EDIT it looks to me John Cann* may have been married before;
CANNING, MARY mmn KENNEY
GRO Reference: 1852 J Quarter in GAINSBOROUGH Volume 07A Page 600
JOHN 1854 has mmn as Kenney also
Just to confirm Reuben 1864 had mmn as Means*

Entry was a common part of an address in that type of place. A bit like "Lane" or "Passage". Sometimes these old names don't appear on official documents if it was just what the were known as locally.
