Hi
This is a continuation of a thread I posted with regards to a baptism.
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=891993.0
Henry Bailey Thompson's birth was registered in Sunderland so I'm wondering if the parents married there. It's all very complicated.
The couple are Henry Bailey and his wife Ann nee Cornwall. They emigrated to NZ in 1860 with two children. Ann was married, as a minor, to a Joseph Hood/Wood prior to meeting Henry. I know nothing about Henry BUT interestingly on their first child's birth he is named as Henry Thompson so did he change his name from Thompson to Bailey? Ann was originally from Manchester and Henry was apparently originally from Nottingham and was born around 1823. The shipping record shows that the Bailey family was from Durham
I desperately need a marriage record to find out who Henry's father was. His NZ death record does not include parents.
A bit tricky to unpick, I know!

Have you checked freebmd for a marriage? www.freebmd.org.uk
Are you certain you are looking for Henry Bailey THOMPSON as your previous post was Henry Bailey?
If his surname was THOMPSON - why are parents Henry Bailey & Ann Cornwell?
-
There is a Thompson/Cornwell marriage in Sunderland but it was 1838 - the birth was 1857.
Edward Thompson/Eleanor Cornwell

Did he marry in NZ? what name did he marry as - Bailey or Thompson?
Any info from his marriage cert re fathers name?

Marriage q1 1840 Tynemouth 25 397 - Henry Bailey THOMPSON and Caroline Ann Ritchie HALL or Agnes HENGHAN or Elizabeth JEWELS or Ann JOHNSTONE.
There are six more marriages of men called Henry Bailey SURNAMES up to 1860. EDIT - there are eleven such marriages if you do not specify that the wife was called Ann.

On Henry Bailey Thompson's birth record his parents are recorded as Henry Thompson and Ann Thompson, formerly Cornwell.
Henry Bailey Thompson was born in Bishopwearmouth.
By 1859, at the time of their second child's birth the family name was Bailey. When the family left England for NZ in 1860 they travelled under the family name of Bailey.
Perhaps Ann married a second time, making her marriage to Henry the third. According to info in NZ Henry and Ann married in 1856. It is likely that Ann was Catholic.

I appreciate all your research enzfan, what I find awkward is Ann possibly appearing in 1851 on 2 census.

There is also the possibility of the 1851 marriage
Henry Bailey and Ann Preston Jackson mentioned in the previous thread.
That marriage might be worth checking.
It could be that both parties were married and unable to marry.
Have you checked a NZ marriage perhaps?
-
Yes I did check - No NZ marriage

With regards to:

Two different Anns. Ann Preston Jackson with a Henry Bailey in Sunderland and probably Ann Cornwall in Northumberland under the name Ann Hood. Nothing here is certain
-
If you think that is the right Henry with Ann Preston Jackson, the marriage certificate would hopefully show his father’s name.
You say you want to find this out.
**Ignore this - they are in 1851 as a family - Sorry!
There is this Henry in 1841
1841 851/26/9
East Retford , Nottinghamshire
James Bailey 52 yrs Whitesmith
Eliza Bailey 25 yrs
Henry Bailey 20 yrs do’s App.
What is Henry’s occupation on his son’s birth certificate and is there an address in Bishop Wearmouth?
-
I've discounted that Henry Bailey. I dug into that one. James' wife was Martha and I've tracked the family and am confident that this is not him. Have made a strong note in my tree
On Henry Bailey Thompson's birth record Henry snr is a shipwright journeyman. On his shipping record he is a toolmaker.
Place of birth for Henry jnr is 7 Willow Terrace, Bishopwearmouth
-
Just out of interest what details are there on the birth cert of Robert Cornwall Bailey born 1859. Fathers occupation etc.

I don't have the birth certificate
-
It looks as though they didn’t marry in UK.
If that is Henry in 1851 and married to Ann Preston Jackson, I can’t see any births for that couple.
You know that Ann Cornwall married Joseph Wood and they too may be in 1851 as ‘Hood’ . Again, there does not seem to be any births for them.
You then have Henry Bailey Thompson born in 1857, in the right area for the 1851 couples.
For them to marry legally, both partners would have died 1851 -1856.
They must have moved to Manchester 1857-1859 - more likely later as Henry’s baptism was early 1859 in Manchester.
I hope someone can find a marriage - it may have been mistranscribed.
The Jackson/Bailey marriage might prove it is the right Henry and give more information.
