Have you checked the Irish 1911 census to establish exactly where in Ireland Catherine & Margaret were born?
Also where parents Robert & Margaret were born
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
Did you check https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/ as it has their marriage in 1907. Robert was a widower
Did the female children marry in NZ as any deaths would be under their married names
-
I think it was Woodburn Carrickfurgus

Hello hardsocks
Can you also supply years of birth of the parents Robert and Margaret, please ?
~ Lu
Edit: Occupation of the father too, would be helpful.
Not immediately finding this family in Northland area ... and there is another SPENCE family resident in Whangarei from at least 1894 with a "Margaret".

Margaret's Father around 1860 Bleacher
Mother 1862
Can you clarify the meaning of these dates please ? And why the "father" and "mother" of Margaret are mentioned ?

Robert SPENCE (Junior)
In the following link you'll find the Will of Robert SPENCE who died in NZ on 10 August 1988.
According to the Death Index at NZBDM (online), this man's birthdate is recorded as 21 October 1912.
https://ndhadeliver.natlib.govt.nz/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE64322440
The Will of Robert SPENCE names his wife and a number of other persons (who may still be living - hence their names should not be mentioned in this thread).
Specifically a nephew of Robert SPENCE was named and that has allowed me to trace his sister Alice.
Details to follow in next post.

Check out the report of the Johnson/Spence marriage
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/PATM19320328.2.40?end_date=31-12-1989&items_per_page=10&phrase=2&query=alice+spence&snippet=true&sort_by=byDA&start_date=01-01-1927
There's nothing that nails it as "your" Spence family but so much fits ("2nd daughter", parents "R Spence", sister "Alice Spence"). Re the Mrs D J Treadwell, sister of the bride, a David John Treadwell married a Katherine Arbuckle Spence, 1929.
-
Alice Jane Waterson SPENCE married in 1945 (in NZ) to John Bruce NIVEN.
Alice J. W. NIVEN appears on the NZ Death index as having died in 1998 (not 1988 as you had earlier stated).
She had been a resident of Morrinsville, but died at Hamilton on 24 October 1998.
There are many family members mentioned in her Will which can be viewed at the following link >

The Margaret SPENCE married Arthur JOHNSON 1932, is very probably the following.
NZ Death Index -- 1949 - JOHNSON - Margaret Campbell - aged 40 years
[Note: A Margaret Campbell SPENCE married Arthur Reginald JOHNSON in 1932. ]
Margaret Campbell JOHNSON died aged 40 years at Wanganui*, NZ, on 10 May 1949.
She is buried at the Aramoho Cemetery, Wanganui. (Note: *Wanganui is now known as Whanganui). There is a headstone (husband & three children named) - you might like to ask for a photo of h/stone at the Findagrave NZ website ?

I think Catherine went to New Zealand before the family

And Robert Spence married a Margaret Campbell (opening post). The 1932 marriage "fits" more and more.

Hi
You can check for Catherine arriving in New Zealand, at FamilySearch website - "New Zealand Passenger Lists".

Following are the burial details for Robert and Margaret SPENCE (senior) :
Buried at Taihape Cemetery :
Headstone inscription reads -- ILMO of our dear parents - Margaret SPENCE - died 20 October 1952 aged 69 years : Robert SPENCE - 488 R.I.R. 1914-1918 - died 14 March 1942 aged 70 years :

And at this link, you can read the Will of Margaret SPENCE
*(aka Margaret Campbell SPENCE) died 1952, widow of Robert SPENCE :
https://ndhadeliver.natlib.govt.nz/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE63356466
The Will mentions her four children (by their full names) and now having that confirmation, means we've managed to "hit upon" the correct marriages for each. ;D
~ Lu
Edit: Removed reference to "aka Margaret Campbell SPENCE" (- not entirely sure why I wrote that originally ;D )
-
Catherine SPENCE (aka *Catherine Arbuckle SPENCE) m. David John TREADWELL - 1929 :
[Note: The NZ Marriages resource which I used, showed the bride's name as "Katherine" - although I can see all other references to her, state "Catherine" - and this includes her own signature. ]
Catherine Arbuckle TREADWELL died in 1994 (- birthdate listed as 23 November 1907).
* I can't find a burial for place Catherine as yet (will keep trying). * Now found - refer to details at Reply # 22 here.
Catherine's husband, David John TREADWELL died at Wellington on 10 November 1980 - he was though interred at the Taihape Cemetery.

re: Catherine Arbuckle TREADWELL (nee SPENCE) :
Did find the Will of her husband David John TREADWELL - you can view it here > https://ndhadeliver.natlib.govt.nz/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE55855700
It mentions several relatives (including his sister-in-law Alice Jane NIVEN to whom he was bequeathing his cocktail cabinet ;)).

;D All New Zealand records for her appear to show the spelling as "Arbuckle".
This includes some 15 or so voting registration listings, where Catherine herself (at some time) has registered her own name.

Robert SPENCE (junior) :
Robert SPENCE (junior) married Kathleen* Frances QUIGLEY in 1941.
[Note: * In the Will of his mother, Margaret SPENCE (Senior), she refers to "Katherine SPENCE (the wife of my said son Robert SPENCE)". This should have read as "Kathleen" rather than Katherine. No correction made in Will document. ]
