Hi All, Looking for info on Abraham Davis b Poland 1867, came to London, m 1891 (taken from 1911 census) died London 1964 Kate ? b 1867 died London 1943 they had 7 children
-
Can you give us a reference for the 1911 census? What is his occupation? Do you have him in earlier censuses? (There are a few people of that name and age born Poland living in London.) Were the children born in the UK? You can check on the GRO for mother's maiden name which will help to find a marriage for him.
-
He was a tailor in 1911 Long Acre London no maiden name for mother all children b London before 1911
-
Can you be more specific as to exactly what info you are looking for -just so we don't waste time duplicating info you already have
Are you descended from one of his children? What is that childs name/birthyear/birthplace
-
when they wed in 1891 & mothers maiden name
-
www.freebmd.org.uk is the place to look for their marriage
If you mean Abrahams mothers maiden name - that is not available in British records
If you mean "Kate's" maiden name - Look for any of their children's birth registrations on freebmd then use GRO online to find the mothers maiden name
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp
-
ALL BORN BEFORE 1911 SO NO MAIDEN NAME
-
So do as instructed above & use GRO online
-
They DONOT list maiden names before 1911
-
But they do on GRO online - if you had looked as instructed

Suggest you try Jewishgen website. Many of the Jewish faith fled Russia/Poland.
-
The name Davis is very English the Jewishgen site can help with original names perhaps anglicised
for ease of pronunciation and assimilation.

Geneteka Poland has some surnames transcribed as Davis, mostly in Silesia, however looking at the scans it looks more like David. However if they were Russian Polish they could have come from what is now Lithuania, or Eastern parts of modern Poland, rather than Silesia which used to come under Austro Hungarian control.
-
Think they are in Wardour Street , St James Westminster in 1891, both with what looks like a birthplace of Warsaw, Poland
Abraham Davis 25 tailor

The son Sandal (aka) Alexander married Bertha Blumstein 1925 reg. St Martin. London
He and Bertha went to USA arriving 11 April 1925.
It looks as though Sandal had already been to USA arriving from New York 23 April 1922 age 28 , he gave the address of 15a Long Acre, the address of his family in previous census.
He also was a Tailor.

Lots of scanned Jewish records for Warsaw in the Polish archives, most in Russian

The major issue is that Jewish (sur)names were - for various reasons - often not a constant. Therefore I’ve played a bit with various versions of the couple’s surnames. The following is probably totally circumstantial, but it might still be food for thought …
In the April 1891 Census Abraham and Kate are already married and residing in 181 Wardour St, St James Westminster, London, England
The April 1911 census mentions that the couple has been married for 20 years, so their marriage would have taken place ca 1890/1, but did they marry in England or Poland?
In the first quarter of 1891 a Gitla SZTOKLAND marries in district Mile End. Could this be Kate?
Unfortunately there are 2 possible grooms: Morris ELLIN and Abram SZLADOWER (it is a guess without the MC)
The surname SZLADOWER seems to appear to the north west of Warsawa in places like Plock and Plonsk. And, in 1867 a Abram Dawid SLADOWER is born in PLONSK as the son of Lewek (a manufacturer) and Rojzy: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSC1-SW6V?i=86 (#167). Just a coincidence or could he have been the same person as the 1891 groom?
-
I would get the marriage certificate, it will give you the address of where they were living at the time
and the names of the fathers. Witnesses names can also be helpful.
Entire families left together, you may find other relatives.
Sztokland is very like Stockland.
-
Great info, will work on it all, thanks for help
-
It is possible that Stockland is an anglicised version of the surname Sztokband. For example here is a marriage in 1891 Warsaw of Kajla Gitla Sztokband, before the slash you can see how it looks in Cyrillic. Entry no 7

I see the link doesn't take you straight to the right place. You need scan number 54, sorry.
-
1911 census Morris Ellen married 20 years with wife Miriam living in Mile End. I think the marriage certificate TreeSpirit suggested is the place to start. Witnesses names can be helpful also.
