Title: Bird in/around Breedon on the Hill
Post by: paja on Sunday 08 June 25 15:27 BST (UK)
I am confident in placing John Bird in Breedon with a baptism of 25 Sep 1808.  I also believe he married Elizabeth Edwards on 3 Nov 1828, in Whitwick.  I think she was born in Worthington, around 1911.

I'm trying to find ancestors for both of them.  John's parents were, I believe, John and Sarah, but that's all I have.

Ancestry has several trees with suggestions, but none have links to corroborating documentary evidence.

The baptism entry for John in 1808 gives a residence of Newbold.

Thanks, that's interesting because Ancestry is giving me this:

John Bird in the England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
Detail Source
Name   John Bird
Gender   Male
Baptism Date   25 Sep 1808
Baptism Place   Breedon On The Hill, Leicester, England
FHL Film Number   590853

Should I be sceptical about it?

Where do you have John & Elizabeth in 1851

The only one I can find is for John, of Breedon, to Sarah Gadsby, of Coleorton, in 1803.

They might be in Newbold Hurst, Breedon, in 1841, John aged 60 and Sarah 70.

There is a burial of Sarah Bird of Worthington in 1842, aged 73.

Possibly Sarah Gadsby baptised 18th January 1772 in Breedon.

paja - I did say the "baptism" entry - the church was at Breedon on the Hill, but the family residence was stated as Newbold - a few miles away.

Rosie- I have them in Peggs Green, Thringstone.  In 1851, Elizabeth is recorded as from Thringstone.  But in 1861 she's noted as Worthington.

I've not come across such inconsistency in birth locations before - one of their children is recorded as born in Thringstone (1851, 1861), Peggs Green (1871), Coleorton (1881, 1891), Whitwick (1901) and back to Coleorton in 1911.......!

BumbleB - thanks, I get it now.  Apologies for the confusion, my mistake.

I think that we also have to remember that "back in the day" this area was rural, and as such then people moved to wherever there was work.  The 1808 baptism doesn't give us an occupation for the father, but that might be the reason for such movement.  :-\ :-\

Most of the trees have John, born 1808, as the son of John Bird and Mary Gadsby.

Sarah's details look correct, but I am not sure about John.

They have him born in 1774 in Packington and dying there on 2nd March 1855. The only death recorded in the area at that time, was registered in Burton upon Trent. However, he seems to be the person buried in Church Gresley on 6th March. A potter born in Shropshire c1775, he was living there with his wife, Mary, in 1841 and 1851.
Mary was buried in Church Gresley on 19th January 1847, also registered in Burton.

John and Sarah seem more likely to be the ones in Newbold Hurst, Breedon, in 1841.
On the death of Mary Bird of Worthington in 1842, it gives her place of death as Ashby-de-la-Zouch.
In 1850, there is a burial of John Bird in Breedon, and he also died in Ashby, age 72.
Their rounded down ages fit the 1841 census.

The nearest baptism was on 27th June 1779 to John and Elizabeth in Worthington. Possibly John who married Elizabeth Robinson in Breedon on 11th February 1765. A few siblings from 1767 to 1779 and possibly one in 1783.

In 2009, I took some pictures of graves in Breedon, including a few of the Bird family, and others have been added - http://www.rootschat.com/links/01tta/

DCB - many thanks for the effort you've put in on this.  I too am somewhat cynical about John (snr) being from Packington.  If nothing else, if he was born and died there, why would John (jnr) have been baptised at Breedon, which seems quite a distance away.  Would these not have been a closer church?

I agree with you also that 'John and Sarah seem more likely to be the ones in Newbold Hurst, Breedon, in 1841.'  Only the age differential makes me twitch a little, but there's a lot of rounding in the '41 census, as we know.

Anyway, thanks again for your help!

regards, Peter
