That's a stinker!
Could you post a larger snip of the certificate, showing more writing, in case it gives any clues?
-
Does it show up better in my first post (attempt)?
Am having awful trouble attaching a photo that isn't too big/half lost...!
-
Did you get this image online? Can you either give us a link to it or enough detail for us to find it ourselves?
Sometime the scan from one site may be better from another if there is an alternate offering on another site

No, it's a copy of the marriage certificate of one of his daughters.

Well its obviously a marriage by Banns so must have been in a church - telling us which denomination/parish/ when/who may result in someone being able to point you to the PR - either an image or a transcript from the original.

Have you found him on a census? His occupation my be clearer.
-
Hi - it was in East Stonehouse, Devon. 9 June 1945.
-
1921 census has Labourer Hawker
1926 marriage has Railway Porter
1939 Register has Timber Sorter
1950 death has Electrician but I believe this to be incorrect!!
-
None of those look like the occupation on the marriage entry. Were there any other children that you could get the marriage certificate for? It may not be worth the cost though.
-
If I can locate them on microfilm I will.
Thank you all for your interest.

The top one looks like works inspector (or something like that), but I guess it's the bottom one you're asking about, as that seems utterly illegible.
Is that image from a certificate from the GRO? I can't see the swirly General Register Office security marking under the text, but I've got some scans downloaded from trees online, where that is bleached out. If it's not from GRO, and if it's important enough to you, then it might be worth ordering a certificate from the GRO, as the register originally submitted to them would have been different to the one in the local register office, or the one kept at the church. Or if it's from the GRO, then it might be worth getting a copy from the local register office/archives - again, if it's important enough to you. Actually, if it's from the GRO, then it might be worth complaining to them that it's illegible, as you may at least get some money refunded!

I was given a copy to be honest.
There are so many certificates I'd like but it's a pricey way.
-
As the area is Stonehouse in Plymouth I wonder if it is ** Dockyard?
-
Yes - most probably.
-
Well the first word, that everyone has probably got is
'works'
-
The longer word looks to me like Superintendent
-
Not a bad shout that.
