Title: Thewlis. Hinchliffe Mill/Holmfirh
Post by: bykerlads on Thursday 29 May 25 12:57 BST (UK)
I am trying to confirm a family link - preferably brothers - between two men who lived in the Hinchliffe Mill/ Cartworth Fold area just outside of Holmfirth.

Joshua Thewlis b. about 1793 to John and Esther ( have found the baptism record)
and
Jonathan Thewlis b. about 1801. I have failed to find any baptism or birth record which would help to  prove that the two men were brothers. He appears in the 1841 census married to Mary plus children.
But I can find no further info.

Any help would be appreciated. I feel sure they are somehow related, there being quite a scattering of Thewlis's in Hinchliffe Mill all through the 1700 and 1800's.

Thanks in advance,

Bykerlads

Thanks for this, Trish.
I hadn't spotted the Jonan. for Jonathan!

Not sure if it the same father as Joshua but must be part of the extended Thewlis clan who lived at Hinchliffe Mill. ( the Place Name on the bap. document looks like an attempt to spell it. And it is in the official Almonbury parish, so in the correct location up the Holme valley)

Am wondering if Mally was John's second wife. Will pursue this.

Thanks again.

Hi, As my husband's grandmother's maiden name was Thewlis I had a look on the family tree but she was a descendent of Titus Thewlis who lived in Huddersfield  I have had a look on Findmypast.co.uk; you may have this information already or it may not be what you are looking for.

Baptism Jonathan Thewlis 30/03/1795 Holmfirth. Birthplace Almondbury Wesleyan Meth, Father James of Scholes, Mother Nancy.  Parish of Kirkburton.

Initially, I had a look for Joshua in the 1841 without success. Then looked in the 1851 Census and found a Joshua aged 58 1793  Birthplace Cartworth  and a wool dyer  living at Spring Grove Upperthong Huddersfield.  He was living with his wife Esther, daughter Mary and son Tom.  Grandson Jonathan and Lodger Hannah Langley.  What is interesting is that the Grandson is named Jonathan.

I did find this Joshua in the 1841 Census, but the spelling was Thewles.
Joshua is aged 45 1796 born Yorkshire. Living Prickleton Street Almondbury Upperthong with his wife Esther 50 1791, son John 15 1826, daughter Mary 12 1829, son Tom 10 1831, father John 75 1766 and Eli Sanderson 20 1821.

I did find a marriage earlier for Joshua Thewlis 15/09/1822 to Esther Sanderson at Almondbury.
Hope you are successful.

Thanks for the info, Susan.
I'll try to match it to what I have already.

What I am trying to do in fact is to find a family link between Dora Thewlis, suffragette, and Alfred Thewlis who was living in Slaithwaite during the first half of the 20th century.

Joshua and Jonathan were their grtgrndfathers, both coming from Hinchliffe Mill area, and it would be good to firmly establish that the 2 men were brothers or at least related , and thence Dora and Alfred, albeit distantly.
