Cannot read this birthplace on 1851 census, but it's not in Lanarkshire
-
Maybe Paisley
-
Is the person on 1861 to see what birthplace is on that?
What has it been transcribed as out of interest?

Family emigrated just after census, unfortunately
-
Ok, what was their name and age on census, a ref would be good as well.
SS

It looks like it begins with 'E' as it looks like the 'E' in England
-
Transcribed as Ealellen, Scotland
James Ferguson living in Village of Motherwell, aged 25
-
I think it begins with 'E' and ends with 'y'
-
Begins with an E (Greek cursive) - Eldlersy ? possibly Elderslie (Renfrewshire) ?
-
The person filling in the census form doesn't appear to know which county it was, as he wrote Scotland
-
It couldn't be a mangled version of Eddleston, could it?
-
I think it ends in 'y'
-
I know, but I was clutching at a straw.
-
We've all been there :D
-
I think it could be a phonetic version of Elderslie. As far as I know, it is pronounced as Elders-lay by the inhabitants, so, back in 1851 when spelling was mostly guesswork, it would be logical to write it as Elderslay.
Sancti, was the Ferguson from Motherwell related to the Ferguson family who were tailors? They had a Hamilton connection.

Not as far as I know
James married in Coatbridge and emigrated soon after 1851 census
