Title: Hit and killed by a train 1915 Hawes area
Post by: Duck on Thursday 22 May 25 10:53 BST (UK)
Good morning

I am hoping someone might be able to help me.  This week I have been told that my wifes great great grandfather Jeffrey Iveson (b 1869) was hit and killed by a train in the Hawes area in 1915, his occupation was a railway platelayer.

I would like to know if the accident did actually happen and if so, any further details.  I have contacted Hawes Library, waiting a reply

Any help, pointers and information would be very much appreciated

Kind regards

Simon

Deaths Mar 1915
IVESON    Jeffrey    46    Sedbergh    9a   6

Hawes is North Riding - Sedbergh is West Riding

You can download a digital copy of his death cert for £3 if no newspaper report can be found

I can't see any newspaper reports about this, though there are several reports of other platelayers having been killed by trains in 1915.

I couldn't either, I'm wondering if the accident did happen.

Thanks for looking

1911 Jeffrey was living in Hawes, 1921 his widowed wife was in Hawes, so he probably died in the Sedburgh Registration District.  I will get a digital copy of his death certificate

Thank you for your replay

A catastrophic impact death could be described as blandly as by 'blunt trauma'.

Zaph :)

There is a Railway Archive that can be searched for incidents, however it is not complete

https://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/eventlisting.php

There's another database for downloading at the bottom of this web page

https://www.railwayaccidents.port.ac.uk/the-accidents/

I can't see anything for a Jeffrey Iveson.

Many thanks

I had searched the Railway Archive, I didn't know about the Railway Accidents site, which I'm looking forward to having a good look

Where it happened.

I'm using a much later map so that I can get everything into one frame (the area is badly split up on other available maps). Hawes Junction was renamed as Garsdale, and that is shown to the lower left. If you look in the top right corner of the frame you will see the Moorcock Inn – my guess is that he lived in that area, although no such cottages are marked on any map that I have looked at.

Looking on street view there a row of old cottages in a terrace at the site.

Where he lived - Moorcock Cottages

"Sixteen cottages were built by the Midland Railway Company for its employees soon after the opening of the line in 1876. Another six "Moorcock Cottages" were built in similar Victorian style half a mile away over the border in Richmondshire"

In the 1911 census, the enumerator's apparently route:

Moorland Head
Moorland Cottage

then Moorland Moorcock Cottages:
Jeffrey Iveson, platelayer
Edward Wilson, platelayer
Samuel Clark Patrick, porter and signalman
William Fothergill, platelayer
Richard Wilson, platelayer
Simon Fothergill, platelayer

then Moorcock Inn

But it's Moorcock Cottages according to his census return

Moorcock Cottages are next to the railway line.

Scroll down to the photos and page through them - there's a view of the Moorcock Inn.

Yes, agreed, this looks correct – on the map I linked to they are the terrace tucked in where the road rail bridge crosses the railway road, on the east side of the line.

Another platelayer killed there in 1894:

25 August 1894: Darlington & Stockton Times, Ripon & Richmond Chronicle

Quote
KILLED ON THE RAILWAY NEAR HAWES JUNCTION. — On Thursday morning, about seven o'clock, the body of James Slinger, a single man (30), was discovered laid dead on the main railway leading from Hawes to Carlisle just outside of Hawes Junction. His skull was frightfuily smashed, and it was evident that he had been killed by a passing train shortly belore he was was found, as he had not long left his home, Moorcock Cottages. He was to attend to his duties as platelayer, and the position in which he was found as in the section apportioned for his work. It is surmised that he had walked into the train after passing another. Great regret is expressed at the fatal accident, as deceased was much respected.

This is looking east along the A684, just emerging from under the railway. Moorcock Cottages on the left and the Moorcock Inn in the distance straight ahead.
