Hi Guys,
My wife's grandmother Margaret McGlynn married John Patton in Belfast on 2 Jan 1922. She died 6 Feb 1979 (in Cork) reportedly aged 81.
My questions are - Where & when was she born & who here her parents?
At the risk of starting with some red herrings, here's what I see:-
A Mgt McGlynn was born in the Belfast Workhouse on 7 July 1898. That Mgt McGlynn had sisters born in the workhouse on 24 October 1887 (Mary & Isabella), 6 June 1890 (Unknown, I think Ann) and maybe 25 May 1886 (Elizabeth, unverified).
Isabella married Edward Clarkin (1905) and Henry Cullinan (1914). A Henry Cullinan was John Patton's best man in 1922. At her 1905 marriage, Isabella said her Dad John was dead.
Ann married Bruce Morton (1913).
In 1920, Mgt had a daughter in Belfast that died at 2 months, Mgt Mary. Per cert, baby's aunt was stated to be Isabella Cullinan.
Q1 - Is my wife's GGM the Mgt born on 7 July 1898?
Q2 - Who were her parents? I've followed some tangled & probably incorrect lines on her mother, also Isabella but I won't confuse anybody by repeating them here.
As for Isabella's husband John, I don't know when he died & he might or might not be the father. I'd like to identify that John McGlynn & then see if any DNA links stack up.
Sincere thanks for any help.

What address and father's details were recorded for her in the 1922 marriage registration?

It helps if you post links to information you've already found. For reference-

In 1901 census there's a female listed as I McG, age 37, RC, born Belfast, single in the Workhouse-

Could this be the mother Isabella?
-
Is this Ann and Isabella (jun.) in 1901, if so, who is Agnes?

All indications are that the children of Isabella McGlynn were illegitimate.
Mary & Isabella born 1887- no father listed.
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/birth_returns/births_1887/02541/1940717.pdf
Annie born 1890- no father listed.
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/birth_returns/births_1890/02433/1905917.pdf
Margaret born 1898- no father listed.
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/birth_returns/births_1898/02076/1792449.pdf
It wasn't uncommon for illegitimate children to list a stepfather/mother's partner, other relative or even make up a name for the marriage registration. Since their surname was McGlynn that would be listed as father's surname, John may be the Christian name of their father but no way to be sure at the moment.
Annie McGlynn married 1913 Bruce Wallace Morton and they had several children but it is the birth registration of son Bruce Thomas Morton in 1919 that is interesting- the informant is Margaret McGlynn of Whitehouse-
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/birth_returns/births_1919/01250/1519545.pdf
So, this connections Margaret McGlynn to Isabella, Mary and Annie. I believe Agnes is another sister although I haven't been able to find a birth registration.

Now to an interesting bit.
In 1920, Mgt had a daughter in Belfast that died at 2 months, Mgt Mary. Per cert, baby's aunt was stated to be Isabella Cullinan.

We know that Margaret married John Patton in 1922 but he turns out to be the father of baby Margaret Mary!
Northern Whig, 19 Nov.1920: BREACH OF PROMISE. Belfast Case Decided.... of the County Courthouse to hear several actions remitted by the Lord Chief Justice. The first was a case brought by Margaret M'Glynn, a minor, by her sister and next friend, labella Cullinen, 21, Bell Square, Lower Whitehouse, who claimed damages for alleged breach of promise against John Patton, Barbour Street, for damages for the seduction of her sister and servant, Margret M’Glynn. The jury awarded £100 damages ...
[not sure of exact order since I can only tease out snippets from free searches] paid her every _, but a regrettable feature was that misconduct took place in the month of _ last year. A child was born in July of this year, and died last September. Plaintiff was examined, and stated that she understood that the defendant was earning £2 15s a week at present. He had to serve another year as an improver. ...
Will let you digest this (assuming you haven't already found this information) before posting a bit more information about the mother Isabella McGlynn's family.

Wow. Thanks aghadowey - Court case is news to me.
And Barbour Street makes it our John Patton.
As the John Travolta song goes - Tell Me More, Tell Me More
-
Could I buy the full Court report somewhere?
-
It was also reported in the Belfast Newsletter
aghadowney has managed to get it all.
Two little things this case was before the Sherriff to decide damages the original court case was 21 June.

Other than possible entry in 1901 census there is no sure sighting of mother Isabella after birth of daughter Margaret in 1898. I can't find any marriage or death for her from 1898-1921 Irish Genealogy). I then continued searching for a death after 1921 on PRONI and found her death! (I downloaded the registration so contact me if you'd like a copy)
13 Nov.1932 at 51 Lisburn Rd., Belfast, Isabella McGlynn, late of Vere Street, spinster, age 78, millworker, chronic bronchitis certified, informant Isabella Cullinan daughter in attendance 3 Ypres Park Whiteabbey.
This puts Isabella's born about 1854 but may not be accurate.

Thanks aghadowey & all other contributors.
Thanks especially for the Isabella McGlynn death cert. If you can send it to me that would be fabulous.
One Question at this point. Do you think McGlynn was Isabella's birth name or by marriage?

Isabella McGlynn never married and all her children were illegitimate. If you send me your email address by PM I can send you copy of death registration as well as the misc. notes I gathered up (some turned out to be other McGlynn families).

I found the Baptism of Margaret's mother. She was known as Isabella McGlenon, baptised in Downpatrick 9 May 1856. DNA ties in with her sister Elizabeth who married Patrick Brunton in Belfast. The McGlenon name became McGlinn in Elizabeth's case.
Now for the hard part - find Margaret's father. Relying on DNA. Wish me luck.
