Title: Unexpected Find
Post by: RowanR on Monday 19 May 25 14:05 BST (UK)
I was searching through newspapers on FindmyPast to see if I could find anything on my great grandmother's brothers, instead I found my great grandmother herself bringing a bastardry suit! Checking the dates the child looked likely to be the one I have in my tree as her parents youngest daughter, since she's described as such on the 1881 Census. So I just got the birth entry off the GRO and, yes, illegitimate daughter of my great grandmother. Sadly she died before my great grandparents married in 1884, I wonder if my great grandfather ever knew about her and whether he would have raised her had she lived.

(Bother, I meant to put this in Lighter side)

Have you checked other newspapers page by page around the same date period that may cover the case in more detail or checked the relevant County / Local Archive Catalogues for these type of cases?

Not all search results display regarding newspaper searches, due to OCR scan failings.

It was quite common for grandparents to pass off an illegitimate grandchild as a "late arrival".
