Morning folks
It is unbelievably cold again this morning, strange it is very cold in the morning but brightens up about midday but not that warm at all.
I am hoping the weather cheers up a bit as I want to get my bedding plants in by bank holiday weekend, would like a rainfall in between, not had rain for weeks.
Next weeks diary we will be into June, doesn't time fly?
Happy week folks, take care

Apparently the up side of the cold nights and the warm days (that some have been having!) is that the strawberries will be sweeter this year. Yum! I got some yesterday, they're from West Sussex, haven't tried them yet but hoping they'll be sweet. :)
-
Don't forget the old saying:
ne'er cast a clout till May be out ;D
-
Rather pleasant to feel chilly air when I ventured forth early this morning to feed and check on a neighbour's cat - they've gone away for a couple of days, and the cat doesn't like catteries. Then back to feed my own their second breakfast, and get my own breakfast at last!
I'm hoping to get on with a lot of much-overdue weeding today!

We changed our heating before Christmas, what a mistake, you cannot buy back boilers now so we had to do something else which means I don't have an immersion heater and the heat from the back boiler went through the middle of the house, gone, so now the house it cold, never felt so cold in my life before, costly mistake, we should have explored other avenues

Don't forget the old saying:

My understanding of this is - "May" is the flower of the hawthorn hedges, rather than the month.
But, I suppose it all depends on what we were told when young. :)
-
Yes, we were told "the May" (Hawthorn blossom). Although we have had some glorious sunny days we still put our electric blanket on at night to take the chill off the bed. I remember some quite cold days in May when the school heating was turned off (May to October) and we wore a lot of layers of clothing.
Today it's not quite as sunny and a cardigan is required, but we still have a few more days before the rain comes at the weekend, apparently. Our poor garden is very dry and the pots need a lot of watering, however it does look as though we shall have a bumper crop of strawberries.
I'll be wending my way to the surgery this afternoon for my Annual Review (height, weight, BP, blood test to be sent off to the hospital, etc.), something they offer to all us oldies. Now to find out whether my blood pressure monitor is working properly. Apparently you can take them to a chemist's to be calibrated. Did you know?

We’ve never had a back boiler so afraid I can’t comment on that, but we have a combi boiler - our second one and combined with that, we replaced the double glazing and had cavity wall insulation fitted. Our gas usage is less than pre the changes and with the windows being A or A+ ones, when the sun shines the heat comes in and stays. Also when the radiators are on, the heat stays in for longer, esp at night we’ve noticed. I presume you’ve done everything you can to insulate your type of house? I resisted cavity wall for years because of the scare stories around, but the firm that did it, did the pre drilling and then showed us the images of our lovely clean cavity with their endo camera before they filled it.

Just been for a walk through Hardings field (part of an ancient field), the Rec and back up via Grange Lane. :) :)
Yesterday afternoon I had to go to bed, I couldn't stay awake :(

Well,what a change this morning, damp,dark and cold !
Brightened up now.
Yet again some official papers, not for me were brought to my door by someone who looked “ very official” —— I offered to show by my passport that I was in this country without leaving it from returning from my Spanish holiday in 2017 or 18, so here the date on the papers and my name different too -
The deliverer was in a uniform , but I could not see what he was representing.
Anyway he went off to the most likely address ,there have been several names mentioned ,not all the same so what us going in I am not sure.
Bright sunshine now ,so hopefully warmer.
A puzzle has been solved—- recently there has been a big increase in heavy traffic using the unadopted lane running along my house and back garden .
I asked one driver why was he attempting to drive a very big vehicle along a narrow private lane.
He said it was on his sat nav!
It is causing havoc with the natural surface and again another water main has burst . My son looked and sure enough it is shown as a proper road.
I am not sure who could get that undone.
One of these days life will be without unnecessary problems!
Hope those who are and who have been unwell feel much better.

Hi
Viktoria do Not sign anything at the door, whether they look official or not.
The only thing I ever sign for is my own expected post from Post Office or Royal Mail.
Yes LM, foot tapping to Tina Turner, rump steak with new potatoes and fresh veg, for dinner.
Yes, weather is going hot and cold, my heating has been coming on in the morning and on some days.
I had some minor eye pain coming and disappearing, rang Doctor and given the local NHS Primary Eye Care number and rang up. I have an appointment with an Optician.
My eye pain seems to clear at times.
My sister (who had all the jabs ) had awfully painful eye pain, which eventually seemed to clear.
But as a precaution, I will see my Optician.
About 8 - 10 years ago, Mrs P took me to a large book dealer and they were holding a Map Exhibition and I acquired this late 17th Century map, of Saxonica Brittania.
Warwickshire, seems to be part of Leicestershire.

-
Thanks for that, I was not asked to sign anything, but the papers were not in an envelope ,the chap showed them to me,my name not on them ,I offered to show my passport and explained this was happening quite often and whilst not worried it was a puzzle and as there were legal documents from France a year or so ago re a traffic accident , I told him, that was quite disconcerting.
I had not been in France for years .
Sunny this afternoon but mild .
Hope all are alright, I know quite a few have problems and health issues but it is how able we are to cope isn’t it that matters.
That is not a criticism , not everyone is able despite real efforts to do so.
It often depends on our general well being ,which if through ill health that is low well it is a lot harder to cope.
I need another iron infusion ,hopefully I will be less tired then.
No date set as yet.
Gosh aren’t the weeks flying by - midsummer not far off —— downhill all the way after that!
Better start my Christmas cards!
Cheerio, look after yourselves .Viktoria.
-
Hi Viktoria and All
If the papers were not for you, please don't give them your name, nor show them your identity.
That is how they gather information about people, because the front door caller already has your address.
We don't drive now and know their 'accident' claim is false, I politely put the 'phone down, or would say you have the wrong house and close my front door.
Mark
-
I'll second that, it sounds very suspicious to me too.
-
We have to be very security conscious , I check any parcels for my name or my daughter's before accepting.
LM
-
It's not a problem here.
Under Manx Law, cold calling is illegal ;D
Whether by phone or a knock at the door.
Even Mormons, Jehova's Witnesses and so forth have to comply, as preaching in the street is also barred.
-
A few years ago a packet was put through my letterbox, it had a French stamp on it ,my name was not visible in the transparent window but my address was.
It was a summons to attend court ,in France re a road traffic accident ,lots of names listed - well I had not been in France for donkey’s years ,recognised no names so took it to the P.O and explained it was nothing to do with me.
Since when there have been a few more so I take them to the P.O.or hand them back to the postie the next day ,but this was a personal visit ,the chap rang the bell, my daughter said last night if he was in black clothing with a logo it was very likely a bailiff ,———
The names on the envelopes are not always the same though, but yesterday
there was no envelope ,,the chap had two piles in his hands and showed me the name so as daughter said it could have been someone serving a writ .
Oh I don’t know his I stand all the excitement!
Not sure he ought to have shown me the name but he would be trying to prove the documents were for this address ,had my number on them after all so it was reasonable that he believed they were for me.
I of course said “ that is not me, I am ——- do you want to see my passport?”
I explained there had been quite a few over the years and despite me leaving a note in the letterbox when I took some to house with the most likely number ,to get it sorted it hasn’t been obviously .
Hey ho, as long as they don’t come to take my piano away ——-
( sadly haven’t got one now,a huge German overstrung piano would look very odd in this little modernised house but :'(
Sunny but coo, washing in the line and need to shop for a few things for my sister in law and neice ,we are visiting tomorrow ,eldest son in to head office near where they live.
They haven’t git their Christmas presents yet ! Both have birthdays one was 30 th April and one 6 th May so lots of parcels to unwrap .
Well must get on.
Look after yourselves .

My usual Sunday was slightly disrupted this week.
Our usual bar became, for the day, a Polling Station for the Polish Presidential Election!
Will almost certainly happen again on 1st June for the run-off.
I wonder how the voters felt being serenaded by our karaoke session?

Hello Viktoria and All
Many years ago I had just moved here and my parents were visiting me. My Father answered the door and a man (probably a Solicitor) was trying to serve papers to appear in Court regarding an unpaid debt.
My Father stated that the person named was the old owner of my house and the man said he would go away and do a few checks and we probably wouldn't here anymore.
Next a British Gas letter turned up threatening to cut our gas off, if we didn't pay. I telephoned B.G. again, and said I gave readings on ----- and I don't owe this money, anyway B.G. then said it was for a new cooker, well I didn't live here then and never purchased that cooker.
I was so distressed when I got to my work, I mentioned my B.G. troubles.
About a week later I got a phone call at my desk, British Gas here outside your property under Section xxxxxx workmen are instructed to dig up and terminate your house supply in the road.
Let me come home and explain, I can show you the paperwork in a highly excited state.
As I was putting my jacket on to leave the office, my Manager appeared from his Office with a colleague who could hardly contain himself and said I hope you are going to get permission or inform someone that you are returning home.
Next, there was an uproar of laughter ;D ;D ;D and I knew I had been had this time, hook, line and sinker.
It was true British Gas were an awful pain for several months until they finally realised that they had made an awful billing blunder and going after the wrong person.

Hi
Another very nice day, warm enough just to be out in my shirt sleeves.
Mark

I have been very busy sorting out stuff to take to the dump, boot load, came back and swished the concrete down and tidied it up, just discovered our recycling bins don't take plastic plant pots, got loads of the things, back to the dump I suppose, pity nurseries don't take them back, don't think I signed up manual work 60 plus years ago, must check the job decryption!!!
Showered washed my hair and fell a new woman, as new as I can at my age
LM
-
LM, the plastic pots are a big bugbear of mine. The bedding plants I buy from the nurseries are in packs of six or more, usually made of black plastic, which my council doesn't accept for recycling. I put them in the general waste. This week I bought some begonias and busy lizzies which were in containers that are a very pale grey in colour. I've just washed them and put them in the bin for tomorrow's collection so am hoping they're acceptable. I know they don't take black plastic because it can't be identified on the conveyor belt (you'd think someone would be able to design something to overcome that!) but sometimes it's the 'wrong' type of plastic.
We all need a degree in recycling these days. ::)

Viktoria
If it was a bailiff, I think he will be well used to debtors giving a false address. A few years ago a man arrived at our door and the first thing he said was someone's name. I said "Who?" and he repeated the name and then said that he was a bailiff. He showed me his authentication and explained that he had been sent by the court. It wasn't until he had gone away, satisfied that I wasn't the person he was looking for, that I realised that I did indeed know the name he had mentioned - it was that of an ex-girlfriend of my son! She must have been indulging in a spot of revenge and given our address instead of hers, I think.
-
Roobarb, you are quite right, we do need a degree to sort out recycling, I do stick to the rules, I I don't know it goes in the general bin
LM
-
Well it became overcast this afternoon so I thought no need to water the garden this evening but no - all sunny again , not complaining though.
All ready for my visit to my husband’s sister tomorrow. Still got Christmas presents to take ,and her Birthday present — we are lunching at the golf club,
there is a nice restaurant ,a lovely cheese and onion pie which I always have.
Not sure of the time son will take me ,mid morning no doubt.
My pepper seeds which I saved and planted are doing well, must look up what to do next , I believe the foliage is nice even if no peppers .
Hope those unwell have a good day tomorrow , it is hard when there is no respite .
Look after yourselves.
Viktoria.

LM you know are not the only person having a clear out. Our recycling won't take plant pots eithe. I used to do a lot of gardening and growing plants, I had a black dustbin in the greenhouse full of clean plant pots of various sizes, when I began having problems preventing me from gardening I managed to dispose of all of them before I became too disabled. A friend grows plants for our church Fayres, her stall is always the most profitable one.
I have been clearing out my wardrobe and my cleaner has taken a suitcase full of to things to the charity shops. Some things were new, the labels still on, bought before I became housebound, all now too big because I've dropped two sizes, there was six pairs of shoes, several also unworn. I have yet to send winter clothing, the charity shops won’t want that until the autumn.
Today I have been going through paperwork, both personal and family history stuff and shredding everything with my name and any personal information, including anything that can identify other people. I have a black bin bag full of of shredded paper, it will go to the same friend who had the plant pots, she uses it mixed with vegetation in her hot composter.
I donate to charity and recycle everything I possibly can. One of the hardest things to get rid of are CDs, DVDs and their cases, also tapes, they have to be taken to a special collection point. I have a lot of dressmaking fabric bought in the Far East, I used to make things for myself, the grandchildren and friends. There is no way I can use it now as I can’t stand unaided to cut out patterns, or move my sewing machine and overlocker. When I looked online it seems the charity shops are not interesed in fabric.
I seem to have hardly made a dent in things to be disposed of. My family won’t want most if it. It will be a mammoth task for my son to clear when I pop my clogs, so I’m doing what I can now.
I’m glad we had cleared the loft before my OH died.

Had a rant in my bank this week!
Because I don't live in UK, every couple of years I get a form from DWP that has to be witnessed and signed by "a person of standing in the community". The list includes Banking Officials
Took the form (Life Certificate) into my bank, only to be informed "We aren't allowed to sign forms"!!
What use is a bank branch? I am a customer, and want some customer service.
So I told them what I was thinking, and stormed out. Bankers? should be spelled with a W ;D
My best mate is a retired accountant, so he signed the form. Accountants are OK, it seems :D
Got a CT Scan booked for next week. During TT Practice week; but all practice sessions are scheduled for evenings, so should be OK.
-
If I was in charge (and thank goodness I am not ;D ) I would have made a Law that any plastic item sold in the UK was made of recyclable material.
If that was the case, the problem now would be ... one council will take a particular one and another council won't take that one.
So I cannot see an easy resolution.
Regarding the numbered symbols on items, some are so small, they are difficult to see.
But I have found this chart ...
Lunch at the Golf club and "lovely cheese and onion pie"
You enjoy it Viktoria and have a safe journey too.

Jebber, our church has a knit and natter group and a sewing group, is it possible to ask around for someone who will take your materials, shame to not use them.
LM
-
Yes LM, I shall persevere until I find someone who will use the fabrics I won't let them go to waste.
Only recently I was reading how dressmaking was a popular hobby again, so I will see what evening classes there are locally when the autumn prospectus come out.
-
I find it hard to throw stuff away, did a lot when I drastically downsized, but not a day goes by when I don’t regret throwing it away.
I too must do a big tidy up of stuff, I want to leave all neat and organised when I pop my clogs!
I am being ruthless with clothes,I can do alterations but sometimes the style etc makes it not feasible .
I have best clothes, everyday clothes and old clothes for when I do mucky jobs - decorating etc but not much of that nowadays .
Just watered the garden , the hosepipe is not quite long enough to go from the stop tap to the front garden ,I have a second one but the junction point leaks.so I fill ,well half fill the watering can ,I can carry that to the front garden via the side lane ,it is not far.
Well a few rollers in the front of my hair which needs cutting - up early and I am looking forward to seeing my sister in law and niece.
We will go to the cemetery where my husband’s parents are - I owe it to
them and also do it for my husband ,they were very good to me.
So night night , hope people feel better.
Well up early in the morning ,eldest son will pick me up about 9-30

The Isle of Man, Tourist Trophy, racing is almost upon us.
When I started going to the Isle of Man about 1979, Mike Hailwood had recently won a race there and we saw a Honda of Hailwood's at Murrays Museum, then on Snaefell.
A few years later Mike took his children down the fish & chip, his daughter and Mike died due to a tragic crash. His son survived. Mike Hailwood was known as 'Mike the Bike'.

Not sure if this fits the parameters for this Chat page. I have been doing some clearing and tidying in the study and came across this song from the School Hymnal of the Methodist Church. I can remember singing this in the infants school many years ago. It would be interesting to know if it is still sung, but probably now so far out of date. Perhaps rather too twee for today's children!

I remember that as a child

I don't know if its still sung but I also remember singing it back in the day, the very early 1950's.

If you use f*book, there are often free groups where you can give things away in your area. We’ve passed on several items that way which weren’t quite suitable for the charity shops. The folk who’ve come to collect them have been very grateful.

I've just donated 2 metres line of books relating to Military Aviation (except ATC) to the Air Ambulance, to try and make more book shelving space for more Aviation Books, Technical Manuals and Air Traffic Control.
A box of Air Ministry Air Publications has gone to an Aviation Museum Archive, because they didn't hold them.
The RAF Museum Archive had one of mine, because it was the only surviving 1935 Edition. The World's Libraries don't have one listed.
I am interested in the development of Air Traffic Control and the Distress Organisation.
I find it difficult to part with anything.

The Titanic Inquiry was far too expensive, but I did get a low grade scan of a page of some of the Distress calls received from Titanic.
It had gone well over £1,000. I have seen copies a lot cheaper.
When I was a boy my Grandparents and Great Aunt told me stories about the Titanic and Robert Falcon Scott of the Antarctic.
There was a fire in a bulkhead of the Titanic and the ship should never have left the quayside.

We used to say this as a prayer before dinner time (lunch) at primary school in the 1960s/70s, central Scotland. Goodness it brought back memories of no choice dinners eaten at long tables with the teachers walking up and down making sure every last bit was eaten before you were allowed to go out to play.

Oh ,Sunday School Choruses, we loved them and did actions to some .” Only a boy called David” ,a big stamp at the end when “ Goliath Goliath came tumbling down !”
“Zaccheus was a very little man”who climbed a tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus,
Running over, my cup is full and running over ——
I am H A P P Y —-
Jesus wants me for a sunbeam
Clifden College was I seem to remember where Methodist Ministers trained.
Sunday School was a treat,a story, some singing and with my friends from our little hamlet .
Best clothes on and back in the afternoon for afternoon S,S.thenwait for adults for afternoon Chapel, home for ,tea and back for evening Chapel.Four times a day ,but it was just how it was.
We were not allowed toys or books on Sundays, except Bible stories , this in rural Shropshire on the Welsh border.
We knew nothing different.
Well ,we did not get to the Golf Club as there was a funeral booked in,well for the refreshments after the commital,so we went to a nearby hostelry, very nice,I had Feta cheese salad .
Swapped presents etc and a chat, my sister in law was rather subdued , her daughter took me aside and said her Mum was forgetting things -so I said
“ snap- me too ,we are 87 and 88,it is very common at our age.
We are prescribed so many drugs which frequently cause confusion and memory loss , but we have to take them so it is inevitable we will be adversely affected.”
So we talked about things of years ago ,so many funny incidents , that still make us laugh over sixty years later.
Well some bags for the charity shop.
If they don’t go soon things will creep back in to drawers !
Fairly sunny but very cold this morning — oooer not yet fed the fish, must do that.
A parcel from my sister yesterday. ,a jar of her - very runny Tay berry jam.
My jam is stiffish ,hers always runny.
I have had some on toast ,very nice .
Well things to do so must get on,you lot do delay me ;D ;D ;

Another warm sunny day. Now, what else can I find to wash? Everything seems to be clean, dry and ironed. There's talk of rain coming in later this afternoon, so I must make hay, etc....
We were talking earlier about the May and casting ne'er a clout before the May is out. Yesterday I was walking past our village green and saw two big hawthorn trees heavy with blossom, one white and the other pink. I smelled them before I reached them, the scent was almost overpowering. It's lovely to be walking about without needing a jacket.
We received our water bill yesterday. What a shock! It had gone up by over £60 for the quarter! Down here in Devon we used to get £50 per year discount, a government award because there was so much coastline, I believe, so Cornwall probably got it too. That has now been discontinued (don't know why). And then the water charges have gone up to the extent that the water board have felt the need to include with the bill an explanation for this rise. All this at a time when feelings are running high about the poor water quality.

Lovely fresh open spaces for your walks Mark, has been lovely for same for north Auckland this week so have been making most of that. Well done too on discipline with your own health needs, lack some of that myself but did do an impromptu skin check earlier in the week as I passed by a pop up site for free checks, first one ever ::) Just the back area where I can't see for now, but all good there at least. Hope your scans and the like go well too KG, sounds as if some improvement in mobility. A Kiwi rider in the IOM TT this time, saw an interview on his prep a few days ago.
Familiar with some of those childhood songs and words but not ones I personally recall from my own childhood.
Very familiar with accumulations and where 'treasures' will go. 18 months since we moved house and downsized and still working through some boxes in garage, reassessing items etc! Much was donated or 'skipped' and quite good money from other collectors for some things and that is still on-gong box by box, one day the car may fit in double garage :D Daughter has that ahead of her now, has been doing some sorting and packing while marketing house and they sold at auction this morning, 20 working days until move ...
Happy birthday for Saturday Viktoria, lovely to have had a day away from everything, lunch out and a catch up with family ... all the best and have a nice weekend all. :)

Viktoria, I was hoping in anticipation for a report on the Cheese & Onion Pie? ;D ;D :P
I was a dinnertime regular years ago at my local Inn for dinner (before Mrs P moved down) and I turned up for dinner at the Bar and there was a Funeral Party in and the head of the Funeral gathering came over, knowing I was not with them and told me to get stuck in to the food and got me a drink too.
Nice for local walks Mare, but I hope that Kiwi bike rider doesn't throw caution to the wind at the IOM TT (Tourist Trophy) Racing, it is a highly dangerous circuit run on normal roads!
Sulby Straight, Isle of Man, is now 202 miles per hour when closed for the racing.
The first three gears and I couldn't keep the front wheel down on one of my bikes.
I soon calmed down when I had a 'tank slapper'.
No, that is not a wanton woman sat on the bike, but where the handlebars get the wobbly shakes and the machine tried to throw me off.

A Kiwi rider in the IOM TT this time, saw an interview on his prep a few days ago.
More than 1 Kiwi! :D
Mitch Rees and Jay Lawrence to my knowledge.
I have never been a Marshall at the TT - they need about 600 per event!
But I have marshalled at Manx (car) Rally and cycling events (GB National Road Racing Championships).
My twin brother was the biker in the family. Bike then passed to younger brother.
I preferred the heater and dryness of a car!

My in-laws always stayed at a very nice Guest House in Douglas. We joined them one year when they wanted to take my eldest son with them ,he was only two and we had a very new baby ,I thought he might become upset
if away from us so we went with them just for a week ,but he wanted to stay with them for the second week, ——— well every evening to The Fairy Glen,a phone call to,us then
“ You go now Mummy and Daddy ,Glandma and Glanddad taking me to the Fairy Glen” —- it was me in tears not him!
The Guest house was really nice, some connection to Geoff Duke .
This was 1959.
A sunny but cool day thanks to a stiff breeze .
Ordered a kite fir Flash Harry and a little book about a baby elephant ,with a fabric “ trunk “,like a glove finger that you can waggle according to the story ,for Kyra, and a soft plush pony for Lily who loves to see her nanny’s ( my daughter ‘s ) horse.
Hoping to get down early June .
The puppy is being very good and Kyra and Flash Harry are being really good ,Kyra has learnt to leave her alone when in her cage ,which is really to give the puppy her own space when tired .
Well cheeses and onion pie tomorrow for tea , I have got withdrawal symptoms -
I feel quite well if tired but the upcoming iron infusion should sort that out .
Got a card from the grand daughter of the people with whom I lived for the greater part of the years as an evacuee, her brother is updating the cottage so they have asked me what I remember of the original, prior to an unsympathetic modernisation in the 1960’s .
It is all in my mind,so clear, yet where the heck are my dressmaking shears?????- can’t remember.
Hope those who have difficult health conditions get some respite, and improvement , many people think of you and wish for better health for you.
Well a meal to get ready so,back to the cooker!
Cheerio folks thanks for your news ,” Y ou are never alone wuth RootChat”

Possibly the Aragon?

The name of the proprietors was Eagles.

When I was young we used to stay at the Golf Links Hotel in Port Erin, now demolished, I hear.
https://historicengland.org.uk/images-books/photos/item/WSA01/01/E0492 We would take the boat from Liverpool to Douglas or later the plane from Blackpool. There were always lots of youngsters in the hotel with their families and we would walk to Port St Mary for square dancing, which was led by a woman called "Diamond Lil". Happy memories, especially as I had my first kiss there! :o
