Hi all,
I’ve been researching an ancestor, Francis Millward, and I’m hoping someone might be able to help me clarify his parents particularly regarding his mother’s identity, which currently seems uncertain.
Here’s what I’ve gathered so far:
Francis Millward
Baptised: 25 Jan 1663, Tissington, Derbyshire, England
Buried: 25 Jun 1738, Tissington, Derbyshire, England
Parents :
Father: William Millward, born about 1624 in Eaton, Derbyshire; died circa 1690 in Derbyshire
Mother: Elizabeth FitzHerbert (as suggested by Ancestry)
Born about 1625 in Tissington
Listed as passed away in 1759, which would make her 134 clearly unlikely for that time period.
I’ve managed to locate Francis’s baptism record, confirming his parents as William and Elizabeth, but I haven’t been able to find a marriage record for William Millward and any Elizabeth, FitzHerbert or otherwise.
Given the clearly implausible death date and lack of records to back up the marriage I remain skeptical of this connection. It seems likely the surname “FitzHerbert” has been suggested due to location or assumption rather than documentation.
What I’m hoping to find or confirm:
A marriage record for William Millward and Elizabeth (the correct Elizabeth)
Suggestions on other possible Elizabeth’s in the area who may be a more likely match.
Any help or direction on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Have you actually seen the bpt entry 1663 in the TISSINGTON Register?

Slightly off topic but I have often wondered if there is a connection between the Tissington Millward families and the Millwards of nearby Wetley Rocks, Staffordshire.
My 3x gt grandmother Ann Frith b1805 Tissington and her sister Elizabeth Frith b 1812 Tissington, married two brothers Thomas Millward b 1800 and his younger brother William Millard of Wetley Rocks sons of a John Millward born c1770.
Last year someone kindly posted the entries in a family Bible that belonged to descendants of John Millward ( Rootschat Stafforshire site) which suggested he may have been born someplace call Sprink? Which does suggest there is no connection to the Millward families of Tissington.

Refers to the "Sprink"

Thank you Hanes. That is very helpful. I did try to find the Sprinks last year but wasn't overly confident I found the right place.
The other option was Hartington where I did find a John Millward born 1759 who happened to have married in Tissington in 1782 to an Elizabeth Saunders. This information was from trees in Ancestry and I did not note the sources.
Looking at the Parish boundary for Burslem I noted the number of places with the name Sneyd near the boundary. That may be the name that links my Tissington Friths to the Millwards as three Frith sisters were working at Highfields Uttoxeter, when they married in the 1840s. A Mary Sneyd Kinnersley lived there.
St Johns church of Wetley Rocks was established in 1834 on land donated by the Sneyd family, and Rev Henry Sneyd was the first encumbant. So far that is as close as I get to linking the two families.
