Title: Irwin: Alexander b1790 d1883
Post by: Ratty2 on Monday 12 May 25 06:25 BST (UK)
Alexander Irwin, born 1790 died 1883 married, it is said, Matilda Steen at an unknown place and unknown date. Possibly from Londonderry, but I have no certainty as I have been unable to locate any marriage reference in any database.
Apparently Alexander was father of James (1837) William John (1838) Matilda (1840) and Margaret Jane (1843) all from Londonderry. Margaret Jane married James Lindsay May 1871 in Victoria Australia and died 1927 at Atlestane, Healesville, Australia.
Your assistance would be most appreciated.
David

If he was born 1790 he would have been 47 when James was born & 53 when Margaret was born.  Could "Matilda" have been a second wife?

Matilda his second wife?
Why not? In any case how do we find their marriage registers?
Or even his death registration?
On Margaret's DC 1927 Victoria Australia, her father is known as Alexander Irwin and her mother's name as Steen. No sign of that couple migrating to Aus.

Have you looked at Matilda's Australian death certificate for information?
If not, that should be your starting point.
I don’t know where you got birth and death dates for Alexander - plucked from …….?  :)

Re Matilda:
That's much more likely info than what I had found via a dubious family tree on Ancestry.
Very grateful to you.

I've been looking at the Northern Irish archive website and found the great uncertainty.
I have no idea which town/village this family came from; by the time they came to Aus they only refer to their County i.e. Londonderry.

Daughter Margaret Irwin married James Lindsay 7 May 1871. He gave Tyrone as his County and born there in 1844.

Cheers
Appreciate your work

I've got Irwins and a couple of Lindsays in my family tree. The Lindsays come via a Harris family from Limavady.

There is a very large Irwin family around Limavady etc.  I think they owned a Mill also on the  Baranailt Road, out of Limavady

Somewhere on here there is a thread with info about them.

The Irwins I link back recently to (relatively speaking)  are from the townland of Shanreagh

PS Though if you go back far enough they are all linked/related. Sometimes the name is spelt Irwine, Irvine, Irvin etc

Thank you for all your help.

So far Ive acquired six children all born to Alexander Irwin and Matilda Steen in Londonderry: James (b1837) William John (1838) Matilda (1839) Margaret Jane (1843) Sarah (1843).

Sarah (b1843) is interesting as she immigrated to AUS on the Lightning in 1861 with a Mary Irwin age 18 (which puts another birth in to 1843! Not convinced of the accuracy there.) Sarah died 1937 a spinster.

Have found the immigration of Sarah (in 1861 on the Lightning) and Matilda (1866 on Chariot of Fire) with Margaret (same ship). Matilda died in Prahan 1905 (DC 10439/1905) and her sister Margaret 1927 at Healesville. (DC Vic 10322/1927).

Just puzzled that Alexander Irwin has gone astray, although I did find his Death Notice in the Healesville Gazette for 10 Jan 1883, but strangely not at the Vic Registrar BDM.

Many thanks

I can't see that death notice for Alexander in Trove- can you please post the exact wording to see if there are any further clues.

Just mentioning also there is not a newspaper I have located named the Healesville Gazette on Trove.
I do see the Healesville Guardian, but digitisation does not seem to include the year 1883.

Do you have actual sightings of Alexander IRWIN in Victoria?

I cannot see an immigration in 1861 per Lightning as you have suggested for Sarah IRWIN, though there is one in 1863
Her death notice suggests 1861 arrival....??
The lass on Lightning 1863,is English and b. 1838.
