I'm looking for any CLARK person which has an occupation related to Customs and excise.
In a Hollingsworth Guide for Portsmouth there were two pages dedicate to Customs Officers

The University of Leicester may have an online copy?
See: https://specialcollections.le.ac.uk/digital/collection/p16445coll4

Hollingworth is available at archive.org.
I made an image but this is a lookup request so I can’t post it here: send me a PM with your email address if you want me to send it.
HJC is at the Broad Street address, Clerk to the Comptroller.
There are lots of names, including John Holloway.
Added: just realised that the OP and title is ambiguous, perhaps you already have this and are looking for Pigot’s?

I don't have Pigot's 1823 London Directory, but from the 1825 edition:-
Custom House, Thames Street
Foreign Business Department, Officers Inwards: Clerk of the Warrants, E. H. Clark
Waterside Department, Officers Inwards, Searchers: John Clarke, ...
Excise Office, Broad Street
Inspector General of Permit Printing Paper, F. Clark
From the general pages of occupations
Agents-Navy: Goode and Clarke, 15 Surrey St, Str[and?]

Apologies if ambiguous. I have the Hollingsworth 1823 for Portsmouth.
I'm looking now for Middlesex
-
Wow thanks for the links to the dirs on FS, very very much appreciated.
-
Out of interest please tell me didn't look through the images page by page to get to pg 1201 Portsmouth. Is there a way to search?
-
Hi
There's no way to search it on FamilySearch, but there is an index in the directory which helps you to find some of the contents

I can't even find the Pigots guide on Family Search, I'd like to look through other years now for Portsmouth. Help :-[
-
I found in the catalogue which lists Georgian Kent 1817, Pigots but I can't find a link to view the doc.
https://www.familysearch.org/en/search/catalog/1171111
How did you find the link you provided?
-
Hi
I think that mostly the directories on film on FamilySearch are locked up and can't be seen at home. There are exceptions, and Pigot's 1823/4 was one of them.
They also have catalogue entries for directories that they hold in other formats.
So it's really down to what is available for free online, plus the many directories on the subscription sites (especially ancestry for London)

Thanks again for all your help

I was able to see the 1923 register at www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-99DV-HX4T but had to log in. Before doing so I just had a forever spinning wheel.
As far as I can see, the Clark(e)s at the main offices are the same as I gave before for 1825, plus one I had missed:
Tide Surveyor J. D. Clarke under Accomptants at Broad Street.

Thanks. My Henry James Clark doesn't appear but he's the Clerk to the Comptroller. In the 1823 Portsmouth Guide by Hollingsworth he is identified.
