John Bolton married Jane Blanshard in South Leith Church, Midlothian, on 16 May 1846. The only other information I have is that her father John Blanchard was there.
How can I find out any further information especial about when John Bolton was born, and who his parents were, and what was his occupation? many thanks for any pointers in the right direction. Maribel

Unfortunately the Church Records of the time in Scotland are often a hit & miss affair.
Have you tried the census returns which could help tie down a rough age and place of birth.

You can access a document at Scotland's People scotlandspeople.gov.uk (http://scotlandspeople.gov.uk) which gives more details (it will cost a few credits).
Pertinent details are that
John Bolton was a commercial traveller, residing at No. 4 Junction Street
Jane Blanchard, residing at No. 17 Smith's Place, Leith Walk was daughter of John Blanchard, farmer near York
It doesn't state that John Blanchard was present.
A newspaper item:
Perthshire Courier, 21st May, 1846
At Edinburgh, on the 14th instant, Mr John Bolton, York, to Jane, youngest daughter of Mr John Blanshard, Escrick, Yorkshire,

Thank you all for your contributions, especially the many from Softly, softly. Interesting to see John was a commercial traveller. He later worked for Patent medicine wholesalers, Bolton, Blanchard & Co. and later Raimes, Blanchard & Co. who worked from Leith Walk. (perhaps only joining the firm after the marriage?) I think John and Jane's wedding was in Leith because of the Blanchard Raimes connection. Great also to have more info about John's parents. Sadly he died in Jan. 1854 in York leaving Jane with 4 young children. The Bolton's were living/working from New Bridge Street and Micklegate in York. I am very grateful for all your help - it has been tricky trying to find out about John Bolton. Maribel
