Good morning folks

Hope everyone had a good weekend, it has turned quite chilly after some very nice days, only managed 1 session of sitting in the garden and now it has changed .

I have been rather remiss about the diary over the last couple of weeks,  been preoccupied  with various things.

Viktoria  what a pity your scooter saga is still ongoing , taken far to long to sort out, they really  ought to get their act together far to much money  tied up in it, hope it gets sorted out soon

Not a lot going on locally for VE   day, the church isn't doing anything either.

Take care everyone, have a good week

LM.

Forgot it was Monday, all these bank holidays seem like Sunday. And another one at the end of the month.

Chilly here too LM, North Easterly wind the last few days. Forecast much warmer by the end of the week.

Sunny but a bit chilly here in Devon.  Things are growing rapidly in the garden and OH has lots of trays of veg seedlings scattered around the place which have to be brought inside at nights in case of low temperatures.  It looks as though we shall have a good crop of strawberries this year - the plants are covered in flowers.

Today our village is celebrating with an afternoon tea on the green (marquees in case of showers).   On Thursday 8th, the real day of celebrations, there will more serious matters arranged by the church and we shall gather round the war memorial, bringing tealights in jam jars and singing "I vow to thee, my country", remembering those who didn't come back (including my uncle, lost somewhere near Arnhem, but sadly never found).

Forecast yesterday was for clouds and 12C max.
Our (concrete) front garden is quite sheltered, so a flatmate and I were sunbathing in 20C!

Very quiet today - did a Tesco run just after 8:00. Very few people shopping.

Got supplies for just a few days, as I am in hospital Wednesday (Day procedure).

Much to my amazement the village where my church is has no celebrations at all, we have a beacon in the village but that isn't even being lit.

After our church service on Thursday  VE day the local undertaker is coming to give a talk, what a day to choose.?, me, well no doubt I will  stay to to back up the priest but I prefer to be at home watching any celebrations,  I can remember 1945 going in our local church Hall, St Jude's  Lancefield St for a VE  Day party

Take care everyone

I'm old enough to remember details about life during the war, but curiously don't remember anything at all about the celebrations at the end of it.  I was just glad that my father would be coming home, though I had hardly ever seen him during the war and had to get to know him all over again.

As far as I am aware, none of my family fought in WW2.  However, my father did his "bit" helping to build Spitfires, which explains why I was born in Hoole (which makes me a genuine "Hooligan) and not in rural mid Cheshire.

My Father was still in Italy in the RAF on VE Day and his diary entry simply said ‘ VE day’ . I saw an RAF chap on the news yesterday and he said he was in Italy too that day and that his CO came along to all the men and said it’s VE Day, go away and come back tomorrow morning 8.30 am. So they got a day off. No idea if my Father did or not as he never said.
Very chilly here so have got the central heating back on.

Same here.
Maternal grandfather died in 1942 of pneumoconiosis (coalminer's black lung disease).
Paternal grandfather died in 1940, aged 63.
My father was too young, did his National Service after the War.

My father in law  a POW,   didn't collect any medals, seldom mentioned the war, if he did he had nightmares, not surprising  really.

My mother kept a diary from the age of 15, I have them here,  strangely enough there is no  diary for 1945,  I was hoping for an entry for  8th May, quite a few missing from about  1942,  they are in the box but    have very little written day to day, I have just noticed entries for when our teeth came through ,being twins we were just days apart .

My father, a modest man, never collected his service medal, but as his nearest relative I was able to apply for it just a few years ago.  It was simply a medal for having fought in the war.  He was a private in the Marines and with other older men (mid 40s) he was not sent to the front, but guarded the fleet in Scapa Flow.  He did say what a desolate place it was and suffered what we called his "war wound" - a broken arm after a fall in stormy weather!

I also have his service record and curiously he was sent from his home in Lancashire to train in Lympstone, Devon, just a few miles from where we are now living.

Like GillG I have no memory of VE Day or the celebrations. I do however remember the air raid siren and being bundled into the Morrison shelter with my Grandmother, then the all clear and being allowed out again. I also remember my father going off in his ARP uniform, I used to to like putting on his helmet.

I also remember my sister's Canadian soldier boyfriend coming back from Holland and bringing me a little pair of wooden clogs, I still have them in the loft with other bits and bobs.

May 8th 1945 would have been my father’s 31st birthday, at the time he was still doing his bit against the Japanese. I would like to think the the deserved honour given to our brave men, women and children on V.E. Day could be bestowed on all those on V.J. Day.

I’m too young to know what went on in the war, born in ‘51… but both parents were in Egypt.. Mum in decoding messages in British Embassy in Cairo..
Dad was in RAOC as Major at the time disappearing off into the desert with all the vehicles being disturbed around so TY your Dad could well have been in a tank supplied by my Dad!

Have been in London today and was amazed at how few people seemed to be around! Everyone round Buckingham palaces I expect… friend and I went to see the Cartier exhibition at the V & A… she’s not in best of health and it was very chilly so couldn’t wander through Green Park as it would have been too much for her… but we had a good day out and plenty of seats on the underground and our trains to and from!

I find listening to some of those who were in the war quite fantastic such vivid memories..

Take care all

My father was too old for WW2; but had fought in WW1,wounded and taken prisoner which probably saved his life ,too young to be in the Army for Tge Somme and taken prisoner before Passendale.
He worked on the assembly line on ,Rolls Royce Merlin engines for aircraft.
We were back in Manchester from being evacuated ,the bombing had stopped by then.
I remember the street party ,and a tram all decorated and lit up coming up our road .
Then at the cinema, the Pathe news, with the first pictures of Belsen ——-I remember the gasps - that man ,skin and bone squatting on the ground wearing a tight hat ,picking at some rags on the floor ——-
We were so happy and relieved but Japan had not yet capitulated ,there was still the horror of their prisoner of war camps to come.

How we got through  - I can’t believe we did  but we did.

I missed the Lancaster flight, that deep growly sound of those Merlin engines
that my Dad may have assembled.

Very cold here despite bright sunshine ,cosseting my seedlings and they are coming on nicely.
Look after yourselves folks ,you are worth it!
Haven’t we seen momentous times.
Cheerio,Viktoria.

Don't remember VE Day except sometimes it was mentioned and I heard and remembered the VE DAY
name. Until much later I always got confused with VE and VJ Days.
Dad was in East Africa and Egypt ,civilian in Air Ministry on airfield maintenance and didn't come home until April 1947.  He was posted back to East Africa (RAF Eastleigh, Nairobi), in 1951 and all the family went with him for a couple of years.
May 8th is also my late wife's birthday (but not until 1950.) So I have special memories of my own then, ( but not forgetting the sacrifices made by all the other brave folk).

I certainly remember the sound of the air raid warning siren and I also remember that we children and my mother slept together in a big double bed, hearing planes going over.  We would ask my mother " Is it a German plane?" and she would always reply "No, it's one of ours".  We looked out of the bedroom window and saw from miles away the red fiery glow of Manchester after the bombing.  We went down to the cellar during air raids, along with our neighbours, who didn't have a cellar.  They brought their dog with them and taught me nursery rhymes and "Incy wincy spider", I remember.  One night the Air Raid Warden knocked on our door to tell us that we hadn't drawn the blackout curtains properly and there was a chink of light showing.  Years later my mother made me a skirt out of blackout material and decorated it with ric ric braid in many colours.

I can remember unravelling old hand knitted jumpers ,the wool in hanks tied to keep it tidy and all together.
Washed and dried and rewound and re knitted .
We wasted nothing ,old clothes that had been unpicked and re made into something else ,eventually being cut into strips and forced into a piece if sackcloth  backing  to make a new hearth rug - a peg rug - ,Dad would mark out a geometric pattern ,different colours of cloth strips made it quite colourful .
Very heavy and Mum had to shake the flipping thing every morning whilst doing the daily clean .
We were not allowed to walk  on the freshly cleaned stone floor!
Mat hopping to keep it clean .
Brass taps were polished —- “ You haven’t touched the taps have you!?”
 ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

The steel on the big black oven door and range cleaned with emery paper, and the black parts blackleaded.
What a drudgery, but how homely and cosy .
Toast does not taste the same from a grill or a toaster ,not like toast done on a toasting fork at the fire.
Oh memory lane !

Hope all are O.K.
Still sunny but very cold .
Cheerio.

I'm not old enough to have been around in the war years but it's very interesting to hear people's memories about that time. I think the 'waste not want not ' policy of those times must have continued for a long time after the end of the war, I suppose if people had been brought up on those ideas they would naturally continue with them.
We could probably all learn something from that these days.

I and apparently many others were entertained by Prince Louis' antics at the VE day celebrations.  :D

Firstly any thanks forvyour messages re the scooter .
A rep from Muick - Sandy called today, they had sent a brochure  at my request and were nearby delivering a scooter , they phoned to ask if I would like someone to call,so I explained the situation and they said that was mis- selling —- to sell me something I had not seen or had a ride on and not to say what I had ridden was not  the one specific scooter and the  only model I had enquired about .
Their delivery chap called ,and asked to speak to my son , explained he was just in the area and I had agreed it was O.K for him to call ,was that O.K?
They chatted for a while and then he explained they did not did not do part exchanges ,better to sell privately ,a new scooter with  only 0.6 of a mile on it was a good buy and should sell well. I would get better than the company who sold it to me were offering ,and that only if I bought again from them.
So we will see,but it is now almost four months old yet still a good buy .
I will have to put it down to experience . :-\
Enough of that.

Baby Lily is all smiles ,my face aches after looking at all the  photographs and videos, I smile back so much!
I really hope I get down soon.
Heart clinic on 12th, so I will mention travel etc and see.

Grand daughter phoned today but the rep, from the scooter firm was here so
I must  phone her tomorrow.
Sunny but really cold today ,poor little baby birds !
Such a commotion in the Dogwood bushes today, two types of cheeping ,wondered if it was baby birds and adults .I bet the babies had been on their mobiles too long!

Now another war between India and Pakistan ? I have forgotten ,Kashmir in the middle ,as if there are not enough troubles!
Not seen the evening news ,fell asleep!
Look after yourselves folks and thanks again .for your kind wishes.
Viktoria.

Scooter has had us all concerned for you I think Viktoria!, imagine it has been a constant on your mind from the beginning and hopefully a better end!

Good to hear your enjoyment of baby Lily images and not too big a wait to be together. We're having a little birthday lunch with our youngest granddaughter on Saturday that her other grandparents are hosting, she turned 3 yesterday and had a lovely day at kindy and with her immediate family. Sang herself happy birthday and recorded by her mother to share with us, very tuneful and clear ... apart from pronouncing the 'L' in her name  :) and then one line in Maori after that as well.

Mothers Day here this coming weekend, Sunday  :)

8 May 80 years on and quite a lot of coverage of commemorations here this time. Our ANZAC Day as earlier mentioned 25 April, first formed to mark military action by NZ and Aus WW1,  now commemorates those who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

Another bright but chilly morning ,managed to get most of the willow screening in the garden waste bin.
I had it put along the party fence ,my very old neighbour was too old to be bothered with her old waney lap fencing which was in bad state ,so I just had it screened and it looked nice.
My son who is next door to me now, is having the leaning fence posts straightened and will have tongue and groove like mine so it will look really nice then.
Some plants may be disturbed but it will all get sorted out .

Eldest son’s 30th Wedding Anniversary on 10 th.

In a week or two,my eldest son will pop into Head Office which is relatively near my sister in law.I have just phoned her and so he can drop me off and spend some time there in his way back .
We have always got on and she looked after her and my husband’s mother with great devotion without one holiday or day off ,grandma refused to have help from anyone else , we offered but no- my sister in law never ever complained .
That went on for over twenty years, grandma was 105 when she died!

Flash Harry is nine on Sunday ,I will transfer some money to his savings , he will get so many presents ,and is quite good at choosing things that give long term pleasure like a magnetic fishing line which attracts old rusty tins and other metallic treasures!

Kyra was upset the other day ,the puppy was tired and had gone to its cage ,
the golden rule is it is to be left alone when there as it will be very tired and may  bite if disturbed .Kyra has been shown her little needle like baby teeth and was pushing her luck ,so a tantrum ,ignored by very calm Mummy!
She is so different to Flash Harry, a good boy and very amenable .

Well things to do and garden to tidy, little bits of the old willow screening panels all over the lawn , seedlings to be in the sunshine and a bit  of trimming by the shed ,the Dogwood ,well I can use that to cover up thec. willow panels rolled up in the bin ,They are garden waste but our
bin men can be “ awkward!”

Look after yourselves folks ,lots of health problems out there I know.
Thanks for your kind wishes.
The list gets longer of where I am lucky not to be ,Gaza,Israel, Ukraine ,and now Kashmir , what madness .
Oh Kashmir —- “Pale hands I loved beside the Shalimar “ The Kashmiri Love Songs .

Haha, Viktoria!  I remember an elderly relative visiting us and insisting on singing the Kashmiri love songs, which my mother had to accompany on the piano.  The old lady had a very wobbly soprano voice and we young children found it very difficult to hide our amusement. In earlier times I think they were also called the Indian Love Lyrics, but that was before the partition.

Very surprised today.

We've received a reminder to have the latest Covid jab from NHS.  Having had all previous jabs, I decided to find where we could get this one.  NHS website gave me a list of pharmacies offering the new jab on a walk-in basis.  I tried the most local, but was told that we have to complete an on-line form.  Looked again and found another pharmacy in the area offering walk-in.  Went down there this afternoon, and was quite amazed to find that we were NOT the only couple taking advantage of this.  I was pleased to see this response.  Now back home and carrying on as normal - hopefully!

Trouble is, the Quiche takes all morning!

Making the pastry, rolling, lining and blanching the case.
Cutting and frying the chopped onion, in a little butter.
Making the 6oz grated cheddar cheese, 3 egg & 1/3rd pint milk mix.

Probably once a month treat, but ingredients have Tryptophan and some other essential Amino Acids.

Then have the veg & potatoes done.

I told my Consultant I was not accepting a spiralling decline after my 2020 illness, so he basically told me to continue everything made from fresh, because I want to try and hold, or reverse some of the decline caused by my 2020 illness.

Provided you do not have a reaction to Nuts ... have you tried eating some walnuts daily?

There is some talk that high cholesterol can be reversed.

Same as Diabetes 2 and its predecessor Prediabetes. I have seen the phrase putting diabetes into remission.

Doctors are saying that there is good and bad cholesterol too? I'll leave you to check the arguments and evidence for yourself.

Ldl Cholesterol is apparently the bad one.

I said to the young Receptionist at our G.P.,  Surgery 'Doctor wants me to watch my cholesterol'

So she said what is it, I told her and the Receptionist replied, that is lower than mine, so I said to the Receptionist with a smile  :) you know what to do then.

Mark

If you can eat nuts ok without a reaction. A few Walnuts are a healthy little snack as they contain nutrients and the oil is reputed to be beneficial for health too.

Sorry but I have to take issue with this.  Type 2 diabetes can be either lifestyle induced or genetic.  You can change your lifestyle and possibly reverse your diabetes - you cannot change your genetics.  It is wrong to assume that all type 2 diabetes can be reversed by lifestyle.

Type 2 runs trough all 4 previous generations of my paternal family and possibly more than that but I do not have data.  Both of my siblings are also Type 2 diabetic - none of us are overweight!

I'm not overweight either, but my NHS Doctor was most definite and adamant with me that I could improve my type 2 diabetes situation and ought to try.

If people have a belief they cannot change or improve their health, some might not even try to improve it.

My Dr or nurse have never said I am overweight, I am 5ft 8ins, ish, so I can get away with it but there comes a time, in my opinion , no matter what I do  my middle has grown a bit, I am sensible  in what I eat so I am not going to worry too much.

Well, my grandson  is due home  today from his travels around  New Zealand  and Australia,  has been gone 3 months,  he landsat about 1pm but we won't see him till tomorrow,   why do I feel emotional?, getting silly in my old age I reckon.

Today will be a good day for me and my family, hope it is  for everyone  else

Sunny and bright today again.  I feel the urge to do some washing, but have washed everything in sight over the past few sunny days, so will satisfy the urge by washing down some paintwork and cleaning the brass.  Don't have much, just the door knocker and a few ornaments.  Of course, there's always the silver....and the oven could do with a clean.  Not my favourite job, especially since it involves a lot of bending down, which I find difficult these days. It's a big range cooker which we inherited with the house. 2 large ovens, 2 grills and 6 hobs!  Or I could treat the woodburning stove with the modern equivalent of black lead.  Now the jobs are piling up!

Or I could sit outside in the sun with my book. :)

I'm not overweight either, but my NHS Doctor was most definite and adamant with me that I could improve my type 2 diabetes situation and ought to try.

If people have a belief they cannot change or improve their health, some might not even try to improve it.

Mark

And have your 4 and possibly 5 previous generations all had type 2 diabetes?

I should have thought that genealogists with a knowledge of dna would know that you cannot reverse genetics (and NHS doctors for that matter).

This exchange piqued my interest. I queried an AI about this, and here I extract a brief summary of one aspect of that discussion: specifically I homed in on a single important example of genetically-determined susceptibility and asked if lifestyle choices could mitigate its impact. [Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor, but I am a biochemist.]

Quote
Genetics confer substantial baseline risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D), but environmental and lifestyle factors critically determine whether this risk translates to disease. Family history remains one of the strongest predictors, though proactive lifestyle changes can mitigate genetic susceptibility

One well-studied example of a gene in which variants increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is TCF7L2.  This is the strongest common genetic risk factor for T2D, identified across diverse populations. Each risk allele increases T2D risk by ~40%.

Multiple studies demonstrate that lifestyle choices significantly modulate the genetic risk of T2D associated with TCF7L2 variants.

Lifestyle modifications—especially high-fiber diets, Mediterranean eating patterns, and structured weight-loss programs—appear particularly beneficial for individuals carrying TCF7L2 risk alleles, offering a practical strategy to offset genetic susceptibility.

I also elicited this statement:
Quote
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is influenced by genetic factors, but no common genetic variants make its development inevitable.

The full responses made by the AI were supported by multiple references to the scientific literature, but I think that is beyond the scope of this forum. If anyone wants a full transcript, please send me a PM.

Well did a lot yesterday, finished- as far as I could go with removing the old willow fencing ,losing two drill bits for the cross head screws ,the screws are rusty so whether Philip’s or cross heads I can’t see.
I “ fished” around in the debris with a huge magnet, the sort that can berth
ocean liners!
No luck though .
Took out the daffs and tulips and put two Verbena plants in the containers ,they were a present from eldest son for my upcoming 88 th Birthday.
Little seedlings need thinning out now ,and a Delphinium needs planting out but not until next door’s fence us sorted ?
Second son back tomorrow .
A new eye appointment and a heart clinic one plus a Nurse one mean there are no decent stretches if time to get to Suffolk to see the all family there .
Baby Lily will be getting married before I see her at this rate ,

Then I tidied up the pavement along my front garden ,weeds grow in so little
soil ,so deep roots, did mine and my son’s whilst I was at it , it looks so much better now.

Tesco delivery this evening plus yesterday eldest son took me shopping to Aldi ,Tesco and Morrisons’s —- all stocked up- things I prefer to choose myself etc .
I have so many parcels today for people who were out yet a card to say my son has to collect one!

Hope all are alright , enjoy the rest of the weekend .
Cheerio, Viktoria.

Provided you do not have a reaction to Nuts ... have you tried eating some walnuts daily?

https://www.health.harvard.edu/cholesterol/walnuts-can-lower-cholesterol#:~:text=The%20researchers%20found%20that%20participants,when%20they%20were%20eating%20walnuts.

Hi Mark,

I only found out! I had high cholesterol levels a month ago after I had my annual check up (OAP - M O T) after the surgery nurse took blood samples for testing and I was put on 'Atorvastatin tablets'.

Thanks for the walnuts advice, I'll do bit of research as you suggest on what foods help keep cholesterol levels down but think it will be all my favourite foods that i'll have to keep off  :'(  :( sob!!
