Title: Was there such a thing as the 17th Regiment Mounted Police?
Post by: whittgreg on Saturday 03 May 25 09:28 BST (UK)
I am researching Mary Gunning who was sentenced to 7 years transportation to New South Wales in October 1833. Mary was from Galway, Ireland, and at the time of her trial, she was married to Daniel Gratidge (his surname could well be incorrectly spelled) who was, supposedly, a soldier in the 17th Regiment Mounted Police. I cannot find any reference to this regiment, only to the 17th foot regiment from Leicestershire who were sent to Australia in the early 1830s. There is no indication that Mary and Daniel met up in New South Wales and I can't find anyone with the surname Gratidge or numerous variations using Ancestry. Any help will be most gratefully received.

Her 1841 Cert of Freedom (on FindMyPast) has "Gunning or Grabridge" as transcribed. Looking at the original it is difficult to identify as a "b" or uncrossed "t".
Other transcripts "Gratidge, Gratildge, Gratridge"

Could the 17th be the 17th Regiment of Lancers?

The 17th Regiment of Lancers would make sense as, on their return from India in 1823 some were sent to Ireland for garrison duty. So that means Daniel was probably English rather than Irish.

A mention of a Daniel Grattidge of the 17th Regiment in the medical journal of the convict ship Lady Feversham, 1830:

"Daniel Grattidge, aged 40, private, 17th Regiment; case number 37; disease or hurt, ophthalmia. Put on sick list, 14 June 1830 at sea. Discharged 17 June 1830 to duty."

Thank you very much for locating that information, Shaun. I'm most grateful. Now I'm looking for information on this Daniel either in England or in the colony, though I haven't been successful so far!

Thank you to everyone who has been helping with my query. I'm overwhelmed by your help - and so very grateful. I've been looking for some detail on Daniel's life in NSW but can't find much as yet. BDA says he returned to Britain on the Kelso, leaving Sydney on 20 March 1841, and he died in Wirksworth in August 1844 (thank you for the newspaper article, hanes teulu, and the information on his military pension and death, Tony).

I'm assuming he and Mary met when the 17th Regiment was in Galway between April 1827 and May 1829 but am yet to find any evidence that they met again after Mary was arrived in Sydney in 1834. Daniel could have been anywhere of the many places the 17th Regiment was sent to in his time in NSW.

Per his army file he was married on 13 July 1828. It doesn't say where, or who to.

Thank you for this info and for all your help, Shaun. Unfortunately, I don't have a subscription to FindMyPast any longer, but I'll find someone in my Family History group who does, I'm sure.
