Title: Miles Gerrard 1822
Post by: bobtonks on Tuesday 29 April 25 13:39 BST (UK)
Miles Gerrard was baptised 24 Feb 1822, Chester, St Mary on the Hill, to Michael & Mary.

In 1841 Miles (Moyles) was living in Handbridge with his parents and his sister Martha (1816)

Can anyone see the marriage of his parents Michael & Mary?

Michael was baptised with his twin brother John, 13 June 1793, Chester, St Mary on the Hill.

Have you discounted Michael Gerrard who married Mary Rowlands  23 April 1820 at Shotwick?

I did because Martha, the sister of Miles, was born in 1816.

It is possible, of course, that the siblings had two different mothers, both called Mary.
AND Mary being a common name it is certainly not impossible.

You are going by the age in 1841.
The ages were rounded .

The key is Michael's occupation - a castrator

Martha bap 5 December 1813 St Mary Chester to Michael and Mary Gerrard. - father Castrator.

Possible Michael married two women named Mary.

this duplicates amondg finding Martha’s baptism, but extends the evidence:

It seems that Martha Gerrard was born in 1813.

Martha Gerrard age 30 m John Ward 31 Waverton Cheshire
Dec 19th 1842
her residence Handbridge
her father Michael Gerrard (no rank)

both father and abode match the 1841 census

1851
Handbridge
Michael Gerrard 57 widowed castrator
John Ward son-in-law
Martha Ward wife 38 saleswoman born Chester City

There is also a baptism that fits
Martha Gerrard
5th December 1813, St Mary on the Hill
Michael and Mary Gerrard

Thank you for looking.
Michael was born in 1793 and his daughter Martha was born in 1813 which indicates that Michael married Mary sometime between 1808 and 1814. I cannot find any records for any marriages for St Mary on the Hill in this period ....  maybe they have yet to be transcribed. I found marriage records up to 1805 for St Mary, including Michael's father John Gerrard in 1792, and records from 1818 onwards.

If it's not transcribed we wont find it ... unless I take a trip to Chester.

Thanks again

The only one I can see is Michael Garrad to a Mary Neoves/Nevies 6 July 1813 at Prestbury.
Both were of Macclesfield.

Not sure where they fit but there are two deaths at St John the Baptist 1814
Mary Garrad buried 18 September 1814 age 20
Ann Garrad buried  25 May 1814  age 22

Michael is a bachelor on the 1820 marriage. He signed his name and one of the witnesses is also a Michael Gerrard

In 1861 Michael has his widowed sister in law Martha living with him. So he must have had a brother who married a Martha.
In 1871 he's on his own. FindMyPast has transcribed him as carpenter!

Some Ancestry trees have this Michael as the son of Michael (which makes sense with the witness on the 1820 marriage being his father). And Michael senior as the son of Miles b abt 1739. So it looks like a related family. Occupations often run in families
