I am researching my Great Uncle George Albert Taylor. no.1167 South Nottinghamshire Hussars. He died at Salonika Oct 1916. I have a lot of information about the death, but can find very little about his service. I am wondering if records of deceased soldiers were destroyed , is it that I have not looked in the right place or are they unavailable

About 66% of WW1 Service Records were destroyed or damaged in a WW2 bombing raid.

His Pension Ledger and Index card is on ancestry, names mother Sarah Taylor.
I don't have a sub for Fold 3 so I cannot see anything else it may contain.

Further to the biography which PatLac linked to, based on his regimental number George Albert Taylor joined the South Notts Hussars in the third or fourth week of September 1914. The man with the number 1046 joined on the 15th September and by 12th October number 1408 had been issued. Bert would have been aged just 17 and two months when he joined up. This was legal but he should not have gone overseas until he was 18. In fact he was 4 months short of his 18th birthday when his regiment sailed from Avonmouth in April 1915. It is possible that he lied about his age when he joined, or alternatively his unit were prepared to turn a blind eye to this fact, possibly because they knew they were headed, initially, for Egypt which was not a theatre of operations at the time. Bert was 18 once he arrived with his unit in Suvla Bay (Gallipoli).
Given his connection Nottingham, he is likely to have been in C Squadron South Notts Hussars.

He was Evacuated from Gallipoli in December 1915 back to Egypt till February 1916 when they were sent to Salonika- strange his Soldiers Effects Record only states he Died as a L/Cpl in the Casualty Clearing Station in Salonika
it does not say How he Died - like the others listed. - Most Odd.
Nor does it mention the change of name of the Hussars in February 1916
His War Gratuity Awarded calculates to Enlisted 1914 as stated in previous Posts

The South Notts Hussars retained their name until April 1918, when the regiment was dismounted to form B Battalion, Machine Gun Corps along with the 1/1st Warwickshire Yeomanry.
The only thing that happened in February 1916 was that the South Notts' parent brigade was redesignated from the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Mounted Brigade to the 7th Mounted Brigade, when they moved to Salonika.
