Title: Marriage lookup: James William Gellenders & Ada Caroline, c.1745–1755
Post by: cheruk on Friday 18 April 25 17:59 BST (UK)
Hi everyone, I hope its OK to post here. I'm not based in Scotland and can’t access ScotlandsPeople, so I'm hoping someone might be able to check or point you in the right direction.

’m helping a friend trace her Gellender(s) ancestry and am looking for a marriage record for:
* James William Gellenders, born 1725 in Aberdeen, Scotland
* His wife was Ada Caroline (maiden name unknown)
* Their son, William Ernest Gellender, was born in 1755 in Aberdeenshire
The surname may have originally been Gillanders, Gellender, Gellenders, Gallender, or other variants.
I believe the marriage took place sometime before 1755, likely in Aberdeenshire.
Any help finding this marriage or other children of the couple would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance!

Chrissy

It's good to post here, but you don't have to be in Scotland to access Scotland's People. Everyone has the same access. It's free to register and look at the indexes, and there is a small fee to view most original documents including records of birth/baptisms, banns/marriages, and deaths.

Ancestry (that notorious repository of genealogical disinformation) has a listing of a William Ernest Gellender, parents James William Gellender and Ada Caroline Peel, born in Newcastle-on-Tyne, Northumberland, England in 1885. For once it appears to be correct*, as this is matched by a listing on FreeBMD of the birth of William Ernest Gellender there in 1885. FreeBMD also has a listing of the marriage of James William Gellender to Ada Caroline Peel in the same place in 1882.

You can order copies of the English documents at https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/login.asp

Hi Cheruk

Have you made a mistake with your dates?  You have posted birth & marriage dates in the 1700's when it appears to be the 1800's

The James W Gellender  who married Ada Caroline Peel in 1882 (in Newcastle-upon-Tyne), and was the father of William Ernest Gellender, born 1885 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, was himself born in 1860 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne (as was Ada). No Scottish apparent in this generation.

Added: and from the 1861 census it seems that James W Gellender’s parents were both born in Jersey.

Update on Gellender(s) — Jersey and Newcastle roots after all!

Hi everyone — just popping back with an update (and a heartfelt thank you for your patience!).

It turns out I was initially chasing two different Gellender families — one in Jersey in the 1700s and one in Newcastle in the 1800s — and for a while, I thought they were unrelated. I also dragged poor Aberdeen into it as a red herring, based on a dodgy online tree! So sorry for that mix-up — I know better than to trust unsourced info, but we’ve all been there. 😅

I was helping my friend Sophie Gellender, whose modern family is definitely from Newcastle, and I originally thought she must be from the later English Gellender line (James William Gellender & Ada Caroline Peel, m.1882). But with some deeper digging, we've now traced Sophie’s direct ancestry back to:

James Gellender (b. early 1800s), who married Mary Aubin (b. 1832, likely in Jersey)

Given the names and dates, it’s now looking very likely that this James is a descendant of William Ernest Gellender, baptised in St Helier, Jersey in 1755, son of James Gellenders & Ada Caroline — the very line I had initially thought was just a detour.

So it’s come full circle — Sophie really does descend from the Jersey Gellenders, just a few generations later than I first suspected.

Thanks again for your kindness and support — I so appreciate this community and your willingness to help a confused (but persistent!) amateur like me.

Warm wishes,
Chrissy

I believe that this fits with what you are saying:

James Gellender  b abt 1834 m Mary Aubin 15 Sept 1859
St Martin, Jersey
his father John Gellender
her father Franηois Aubin

These are the parents grandparents of James W Gellender who married Ada Caroline Peel. So your friend’s Jersey ancestors moved to Newcastle ~1860 where their son was born. Perhaps James (~1834) was already in Newcastle before the date of his marriage and went to Jersey for his wedding.

Births, Gellender, Newcastle-on-Tyne, mother Aubin
James William 1860
Florence Mary Elizabeth 1862
Francis John 1864
Blanche Louise 1866
Ernest Henry 1868
Ada Amy 1870
Louisa Mary 1873
Charles Frederick 1874

1861 Census, Newcastle: James Gellender, 26, born Jersey; wife Mary, 27, born Jersey; James William Gellender, 9 months, born Newcastle. Haven't found them in 1871, but by 1881 Mary was a widow.

Er .... it's a bit of a coincidence, surely, that two couples named James and Ada Caroline Gellender should have sons named William Ernest 130 years apart, one in Jersey, the other in Newcastle?

There is a Scottish connection after all: Mary Gellender/Aubin’s father died in Newcastle but was “of Tayport” in 1865.

1851 Census: St Martin, Jersey. Francis Aubin, 43, draper, born Grouville, Jersey; daughter Mary, 18; son John, 16; daughter Jane, 14; son Charles, 12; all born St Martins.

1841: Francis, 32, draper; Mary, 32; Francis, 10; Mary, 8; John, 6; Jane,4; Charles, 2; Elizabeth Coutanches, 28. But wife/mother's name is not Elizabeth so maybe this Mary isn't the future Mrs Gellender.

Thats great thank you, the original intention was to try and go back to investigate the origin of her surname but is reportedly rare. There are various hypotheses.

Hi, just to jump in.

The Jersey 1815 Militia Survey gives :

William Gallander, aged 65
William Gallander, aged 30

Both of whom would fit nicely.
