Hi,
This feels like a bit of a funny one. I'd really value an outside perspective. I'm adding all the relevant details I have, but please ask if there's something else you need.
Thanks to DNA, I recently found out that I'm a BARNETT descendant.
I'm currently looking at Benjamin BARNETT born c. 1819 in Liverpool and his parents, Samuel & Priscilla BARNETT. Although I don't have any records putting Benjamin or his parents in L'pool, Benjamin gives L'pool as his place of birth on every census.
I'd particularly value any thoughts on what happens to Priscilla after 1841, where is Martha and daughters in 1861, and any thoughts on Benjamin's father, Samuel BARNETT.
Benjamin's year of birth fluctuates a little from census to census;
41 = 1821
51, 61, 71 = 1819
81 = 1825
91 = 1820
Benjamin's death/burial gives a year of birth of 1819.
The only possible baptism I've come up with:
14/08/1825
St. Mary, St. Denys & St. George, Manchester
Benjamin s. Samuel & Priscilla BARNETT, Manchester, Labourer.
41 Census
Great Bridgewater Street, Deansgate, Manchester
Priscilla BARNETT, 55 c. 1786
Benjamin BARNETT, 20 c. 1821, warehouseman
Stanley JOHN, 25 c. 1816, iron founder
Benjamin marries in 43:
26/02/1843
St. Mary the Virgin, Eccles
Married by banns.
Benjamin BARNETT, full, B, Warehouseman, Pendleton, Samuel BARNETT, mechanic
Martha PHILLIPS, full, S, Pendleton, John PHILLIPS, mechanic
Witnessed by William WESTERN & Thomas GORSE
Both Benjamin & Martha sign the register with an 'x'.
On future certificates, Benjamin fully signs his name, but Martha continues to use an 'x'.
Benjamin & Martha's children:
Ann 1843 - 1922. Born Hulme. Occupation of warehouseman recorded with birth cert. and bapt. Birth registered by grandfather, John Phillips, occupier, 13 Ogden St, Hulme.
Priscilla 1846 - 1849. Born 12 Eagle St, Hulme. Occupation of labourer with birth cert. and occupation of porter recorded with bapt. Died 39 Baxter St, Hulme.
Emma 1848 - 1842. Born 39 Baxter St. Occupation of labourer recorded with birth cert. and bapt. Death 39 Baxter St. Death registered by grandfather, John Phillips, 24 Agnes St, Hulme.
Samuel 1851 - 1935. Born 39 Baxter St, Hulme. Occupation of labourer recorded with birth cert.
Emma 1853 - 1926. Born 11 Back Pump St, Hulme. Occupation with birth cert, labourer.
Note: Martha nee PHILLIPS had a sister named Emma and her mum was named Ann.
I THOUGHT I had Priscilla BARNETT on the 1851 census and then a 1853 death/burial, but...
I bought the death cert. and this is what is what it says:
10/02/1853
67 Stott St, Hulme
Priscilla BARNETT, 71 years, widow of George BARNETT, labourer
Death registered by Martha BARNETT (signed name with an 'x'), present at death, 8 Eagle St, Hulme
The name, age and a Hulme location are all good. The death being registered by a Martha BARNETT who signs her name with an 'x' is good. The address of 8 Eagle St, Hulme for Martha is interesting. In July of 46 when Martha's second child is born, the baby is born at 12 Eagle St, Hulme. But obviously the name of George BARNETT is wrong. I would be expecting to see Samuel BARNETT.
Do death certs in this time period ever have obvious mistakes, like a given name being totally wrong? Could Samuel have been known as George? I actually have a George Waring in my tree in the 1800s who was professionally known as Thomas Waring. Or is this simply not my Priscilla? If this isn't my Priscilla, I haven't found an alternative.
This is the Priscilla I'd found on the 51 census;
Class: HO107; Piece: 2221; Page: 19
4 Watson St, Hulme
Presilia Barnett, 63 c. 1788, lodger, M, work from Parish, born Scotland
On the 51 census Benjamin & Martha BARNETT are as follows;
HO107/2221/ p 31
39 Baxter St, Hulme
1861 Census. Chorlton Union Workhouse
Rg 9/2867/ 96 p 3
The entry on this census looks very like my Benjamin BARNETT and his son, Samuel.
I can't see Benjamin's wife, Martha, or his two daughter, Ann & Emma in this workhouse.
I MAY have Ann & Emma in 61 but the relationships are wrong, and Martha isn't with them;
1861 Census. 5 Bennett St, Manchester
Class: Rg 9/2955/71 p 21
Mary BARNETT, head, 21 c. 1840, unm, book binder, Manchester
Ann BARNETT, sister, 18 c. 1843, unm, pack tenter in cotton mill, Manchester
Emma Barnett, niece, 8 c. 1853, scholar, Manchester
Mary Emelia, boarder, 28 c. 1833, unm, cotton ???? loom weaver, Ireland
By 71 the BARNETT family are in Greetland, Elland with Greetland, West Yorkshire.
RG10/4404/83 p 5
The eldest BARNETT child, Ann, had a baby outside of marriage in Jan 63 in Ramsbottom, Lancs. I don't know, but the whole BARNETT family could have been in Ramsbottom at the time of the birth signalling an end to the BARNETT family living in Manchester between the April 61 census and the birth of Ann's son in Jan 1863.
After the 1871 census Ann & Emma remain in Greetland. Samuel moves to and remains in Oldham, Lancs.
Cheers, Rowan Tree :)

With regards to Benjamin's father, Samuel BARNETT, I came across something interesting in the newspaper. I've no idea if it's my guy, but I thought it was worth including.
It was from The Manchester Times, 14/12/1853
It's interesting that it mentions a warehouseman and Birmingham.
The only possible marriage for Samuel and Priscilla that I've, so far, been able to turn up is;
31/10/1815
St. Martin in the Bull Ring, Birmingham
Samuel BARNETT to Priscilla BARRS or BARNS
-
I've also got the attached 1846 death cert. of a Priscilla Barnett, wife of Thomas Barnett, labourer. The death was registered by Hannah Butler, Fallowfield.
-
That 1846 death certificate is for a Priscilla in Foleshill NOT Fallowfield.
Foleshill is in Warwickshire so probably no connection. The informant also lives in Foleshill
-
Thanks for clarifying. At least I can completely disregard that death.
Cheers, Rowan :)

Bourton on Dunsmore Warwickshire
baptism 26 Dec 1816
Samuel son of Samuel and Priscilla Barnett . Labourer . Bourton,
Warwickshire , Birmingham ?
Thanks for this :)
This baptism would fit (date wise and location/county wise) with the 1815 marriage of Samuel and Priscilla in Birmingham.
The names are all good.
This could be an elder sibling of my Benjamin.
Benjamin does name his only son, Samuel.
I wish I had more to link people and locations. If this baptism is Benjamin's brother, where does Liverpool and Manchester fit into the equation and what happened to baby Samuel born in 1816?
Samuel, Priscilla, baby Samuel, and my Benjamin are a tricky bunch to pin down.
Thank you again.

Thank you. You're a star. I'm going to check this tree out.
I've encountered a few BARNETT trees on Ancestry. Some appear to be decent and researched, but then there are others... :-\
This one you've highlighted is worth looking at. Fingers crossed I'll find something helpful.

As Wilcoxon says be careful taking anything from those trees. I can’t see any evidence that Benjamin on them is correct. No census proof, baptism etc and the only one with any detail outside Warwickshire where Barnett seems to be a common surname.
-
Thanks :)
Maybe I was being too polite in my last comment. I know there are lots of cut & paste, copied and completely un-researched trees on Ancestry. I've no idea what the owners of those trees get out of the experience.
I have a public tree on Ancestry. It is constantly being copied without being checked or researched by the person doing the copying. I, like anyone, make mistakes in my tree. When I find a mistake, I update my tree, but that mistake remains in the copied trees. I go through phases where I get frustrated and make my tree private, but that never lasts. I like being in touch with other family historians.
I'm happy to look at other trees. If it's a tree built and researched by the owner of the tree, I get in touch. Sometimes collaboration can be born from such contact.
I really do appreciate your advice, though. I have shared the very same advice myself.
Kind regards, Rowan :)

For anyone interested, my tree on Ancestry (or one of my trees) is called:
Barnett, Aspey & Phillips Family Tree
It's a very new tree that I created when my DNA revealed one of my great-grandparents isn't who I thought they were.
The tree owner is Kirsty Morley (that's me). I smile when I look at my username on RootsChat, "Rowan Tree." When I gave birth to my now 18 year old son, Rowan, I felt suddenly very connected to all my female ancestors who had laboured and given birth before me. It was that experience that inspired me to look into my ancestry.
