Title: Where can I find name of new owners of Kilravock Castle?
Post by: Minnesotan on Tuesday 08 April 25 10:41 BST (UK)
News reports state that the closing date for the sale of Kilravock Castle was 11 Oct 2023. Google searches have not provided any additional information.

Where should I look to find the name of the new owner(s)?

It is possibly a private purchaser who does not wish their details to be posted all over the internet  :-\

It looks as if the new owners are a charitable trust (SCIO = Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation) called Kilravock Christian Trust https://www.oscr.org.uk/about-charities/search-the-register/charity-details?number=SC049005

There's a contact address on the OSCR web site.

I'm sure that I read that they were the vendors.

It was put on the market in 2023.

Ah, right. The OSCR page was last updated a week ago.

Wonder what the trust is going to do with the proceeds?

PS contrary to what the Country Life article says, it is not pronounced 'Kilrorke'. It does not have two letters r in it. It is pronounced Kilrawk, rhyming with hawk.

I've never heard it pronounced any other way (except by people who have only ever seen the name in print, but never heard it spoken, and have pronounced it 'kill-RAV-ock')

I see that https://www.kilravock.com/ says "Kilravock Castle (pronounced ‘Kil-rawk’)".

Apparently the local community wanted to purchase the castle but did not have enough time to fund raise.  A Facebook entry suggests it was a private buyer who did not want to be named

I've lived within an hour's drive of Kilravock for over 4 decades.

https://www.kilravock.com/ says "Kilravock Castle (pronounced ‘Kil-rawk’)". Not Kilrawch.

Oh well - I'm used to West coast soft accent. I found the east coast ones rather shrill.

Why are you trying to turn this into a pronounciation thread  ???

Google has this about its origins:

Quote
Kilravock" in Scottish Gaelic, originally "Cill Rathaig," means "church at the small circular fort". It's the name of a castle and the ancestral home of the Clan Rose, located near Croy, between Inverness and Nairn.
........
Gaelic Origin: The name "Kilravock" comes from the Scottish Gaelic "Cill Rathaig".
Meaning: "Cill" translates to "church" and "Rathaig" means "small circular fort"

Absolutely.

Though there are a few from further south and east that are also a challenge.

For example Aberuthven, Alford, Alves, Athelstaneford, Baledgarno, Drumelzier, Dumyat, Friockheim, Glamis, Kilconquhar, Kingussie, Maryculter, Milngavie, Peterculter, Rothes, Strachan, Strathaven, Tomintoul among others.

..... not counting the many half years I spent up there.

However, we've still not solved the question of who now owns the Castle.

Indeed.

Any recent change of ownership should be on record in the Land Register https://scotlis.ros.gov.uk/

To search this, you need to know the post code of the property. The post code of Kilravock Castle is IV2 7PJ.

The last purchase date on record is 18 September 2020, so the latest change of owner hasn't reached the online register yet. Once it does, you can apply to the Land Register for a copy of the title, which should tell you who bought it.

You could send an e-mail to the e-mail address on the link posted by aghadowey above https://www.kilravock.com/

Or you could write a good old-fashioned letter - the postal address is Kilravock Castle, Croy, Inverness IV2 7PJ - and ask your question that way.

Which reminds me to ask what information you are hoping to get from the castle owners? Might it be something that is on record somewhere else?

I;m not on Facebook but found this which echos what Rosie said earlier

Clan Rose Page
Reading the minutes from Croy & Culloden Moor Community Counsel. The Counsel was only given the Closing Date and Time nothing more. The new owners asked for privacy. No name for the new owner either.

The closing date for offers was 11 October 2023.

I have read that Miss Rose made it over to the trust quite some time ago but the online sources are not unanimous about when. One says 1971, another says 1984.

Miss Rose ran the castle as a Christian guest house for many years, and I believe that that continued after she made it over to the trust.

She had attended the same school as I did (decades later) and some time in the 1970s she hosted an old girls' reunion. I wasn't too interested in the reunion, but I was always interested in castles and I took the opportunity to see inside Kilravock. Not that we saw a lot of it; it was an elegant afternoon tea in the drawing room, not a tour of the building.  And for some reason, although I have never gone anywhere without a camera, I omitted to take any photographs at all, either inside or out. Probably it was raining and I didn't want to get the camera wet!

There a Facebook page dated 24 January saying that the Campbells of Cawdor bought Kilravock castle. It's by Clan Rose Page and it says, "So it's time... who bought Kilravock Castle you ask??? The Campbells of Cawdor Estate  If you have read my books you will know of the History of the Campbells and the Roses. Thank You Campbells for Leaning In and Taking Over the Kilravock Christian Trust debacle. Please continue with your plans, we appreciate 🙏 your efforts."

Debacle??

I did some research on another Scottish Castle many years ago and we used the Register of Sasines to find ownership, Local and Regional Authority Planning Minutes, Valuation Rolls and several other sources.

I've come late to this. I've only an indirect interest in Kilravock and more of an interest in the origins de Ros family, in particular the origins of their moniker as the Roses of Geddes. My wife and I did visit Kilravock when it was open for afternooin teas and tours a good few years ago, when still in the hands of the Rose family albeit via a trust, so I was able to go around the house and photograph various paintings therein. As I recall Teen Ranch was operating in the grounds ("a  Christian Youth Outdoor Activity centre for teenagers" - still going).

It might be regarded as the ancestral home of Clan Rose but it's not the Rose's original home. The de Ros family was given the lands of Geddes by King William the Lion in 1174. By 1295 the incumbent de Ros had sold Wester Geddes and had acquired Kilravock through marriage. Cawdor Castle was built much much later on the lands of Wester Geddes. Easter Geddes was sold to Macintosh who had had Rait in 1165 (not the later ones who built today's Geddes House - they came along centuries later). Easter Geddes as a place name still exists although not as extensive as it once was; Wester Geddes exists as Cawdor and surrounding bibs and bobs, with at least one farm hinting at its original name.

I'd've liked to have gone through the Cawdor Charters in Edinburgh to weed out mentions of Wester Geddes. I know the Bundle numbers but I don't know Latin nor could I cope with Scottish Secretary Hand....
