Can someone please identify William Bruce's occupation? The cutting is from his daughter's death certificate dated 1898.
Thanks in advance

Master Mariner (deceased) ?
Although it doesn’t look like an ‘s’ in master but it’s the only thing I can think of that goes with mariner!

Its 'possibly' Master Mariner But last time I had an image from SP that looked like this I contacted them, said I couldn't read it and they re-scanned the image.
Which resulted in a perfectly readable image being sent to me.
Though in comparison to some, SP may be cheap to purchase BMD Scans (though the lack of a sub means that census images can turn out to be very expensive for common names) they are often not easy to read.
Contacting them is one way to let them know the images often just are not fit for purpose

Is this any better. I've stretched it!

Looks like first word could be 'Wright' then marine or mariner.
So a shipwright maybe?
-
Definitely an M not a W- see cap W in William above.
Think it would be best to ask for a re-scan , as Boo suggests.
-
Do you have him in any other records e.g. marriage, census etc
-
I agree, it looks like Master Mariner, though a better scan would be helpful.
Although a common name, there was a William BRUCE, master mariner (5 Nov 1855), born 1825 Boddam, Aberdeen. And another born 1833 in Aberdeen (certificate on 6 Oct 1860). Probably others too.

Thanks everyone for sharing your views, I will ask for a rescan.
Kind regards

For your interest, I received a rescanned copy today, and it is so much easier to read - it is 'Master Mariner'
Many thanks

Have they replaced the other one on the website with the readable scan? If you search again the record will say its already paid for so you don't need to pay again.
If they have, that's a big plus point when advising people to contact SP if they get an image they can't decipher.

Yes, That is their intention
