Title: Help with translation of a death certificate Norman Thomas Maclagan
Post by: dippitybix on Tuesday 01 April 25 21:29 BST (UK)
Hello all,
I'm looking for some help in regards to a death certificate I've found on Family Search regarding a distant cousin of mine, Norman Thomas Maclagan.

I'm looking for help in regards to his occupation, whether he was married and any other interesting information.

A link to the record can be found here

Many thanks

Interesting, thank you. I know he married a Sarah McKee in 1917 however she died a year later from Influenza. There is an outgoing passenger record for Norman Thomas on ancestry from 1925 to the Cape occupation shopman.

From his WW1 records he served in the Royal Engineers as a Sapper and was formerly an Iron Moulder.

I spent 16 years in The Netherlands, so I know a little Dutch. Which is similar to Afrikaans.

But  I used Google Translate on the occupation as Gieter was a new one on me!
The usual expression for gardener would be Tuinman?

Fits with the previous occupation of Iron moulder...

A LoodGieter is Afrikaans for a plumber. I grew up in South Africa and had to learn Afrikaans at school.

Seems he got divorced in 1945.
