Title: Jollie's Land - Edinburgh
Post by: Riverman19 on Tuesday 01 April 25 11:35 BST (UK)
Can anyone provide me with some information on "Jollie's Land" in Edinburgh. I suspect it was in the vicinity of Jollie's Close at 357 Castlehill, but have not been able to locate it on the old maps. It was given as an address in the 1841 census. Thank you.

Stuart Harris's "Place names of Edinburgh" lists Jollie's Close (595 High Street) and is listed on Ainslie 1780 and was named after a family, including Patrick Jollie and (later) Alexander Jollie, writer who owned a tenement at the head of the close.

Snippets in newspapers

1797  Jollies Land, head of Cannongate.
1808 Jollies Land, Gayfield Place.

Interesting that there seems to be more than one. Gayfield Place is near the top of Leith Walk, nowhere near Canongate, never mind the Castle.

And the one marked by Little Nell is off Castle Hill, not in the Canongate, which is further down the Royal Mile. Canongate Head is below the Nether Bow.
