Title: WILFRED BATES WW1 1918
Post by: trevalyn on Saturday 29 March 25 17:42 GMT (UK)
WILFRED  BATES died on 28 Aug 1918 after serving with 4th Batt Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Aged 26, he was the husband of Emily Bates, 8 Smithy Street, Westhoughton. His Pension Card includes the name of a child, John Stringfellow, born in 1906, (If these dates are correct it may be that John Stringfellow was a step-son?)
Wilfred Bates is entitled to have his resting place designated as a War Grave but that requires proof of burial.
Does anyone out there know Where Wilfred Bates is buried?

Thank you, both. According to Wilfred Bates' Pension Card, John Stringfellow was born on 6 Dec 1906.  Wilfred married Emily Stringfellow in 1912 - so presumably John was the child of a previous marriage/ relationship.
Wilfred most likely buried in or around Westhoughton.  Any other clues still very welcome,

Hope I'm not leading you down a blind alley. John Stringfellow is relevant only inasmuch as he appeared on Wilfred's Pension Card. My end objective is to find proof of where Wilfred Bates is buried.
I don't know the Bolton area but Horwich and Westhoughton appear to neighbouring districts to the west side of the town,

oh no your not leading me away, in the absence of a quick reply and correct burial for Wilfred just looking around for clues, I have looked in a couple of cemeteries and various church resources and found no details,
I noticed his other next of kin was his mother Mary, who was living in Bolton Workhouse, did you find any details on her they could be buried in the same plot

are there two records for  Wilfred Bates

Wilfred Bates 200796, Welsh fusiliers, wife Emily of West Houghton, discharged June 1918,

Wilfred Bates 15934 also wife Emily West Houghton, discharged not fit in 1914 , a collier born All Saints Hindley,

Strange coincidence  - two men called Wilfred Bates, two wives called Emily, both in West Houghton.
I was only aware of Wilfred Bates 200796. The mention of Hindley does raise the question as to whether we should be looking around Wigan rather than/as well as Bolton.

Wilfred most likely buried in or around Westhoughton.

I assume you've already checked Westhoughton cemetery itself - there's no record of him there.
