Title: Whitstable Newspaper Lookup
Post by: Heb66 on Wednesday 26 March 25 15:29 GMT (UK)
Hi Rootschatters,

I was wondering if permissable if anyone could possibly be so kind to do a newspaper look up search for me.

I am interested in gleaning if an advertisement was ever placed for a companion for a Mrs Matilda King who resided at Way Post House, Borstal Hill, Whitstable, Kent. The advert may have been placed in the Whitstable Times and Tankard Press if it was in print then.

Also, at the same time there is a gentleman called Maurice Relf mentioned on 1-1-1938 publication in the above Newspaper. I would love details regarding the article published.

As always I would honestly appreciate any help and time spent helping me with this search.

Warmest regards....Helen.

Are you aware that you can search British newspaper archive without a subscription.   :-\
I think it is also possible to look at the newspaper database on FindMyPast, you can register on there for a free account.  If it allows you to do a newspaper search you can download a copy using micro payment.

The January 1938 article was the wedding of Mr A G L Walton and Miss K J Baird, Maurice Relf was just mentioned as being the best man

Adding to the good information Rosie has already give.

A photograph is included with a description of the marriage , just in case it is of interest. Lots of names but not Mrs Matilda King.

When might the advertisement for a companion have been published? It’s difficult to search for as I imagine it would likely refer to “a lady” without giving a name.

Hi Everyone,
Thank you so much for all your valuable input.
The advert for a companion for Matilda King would have been put in anytime from 1911 until early 1921.
My interest is in Emma Hunt who was the companion to Matilda King.
Emma is my 1 cousin x 3 times removed .
I have everything from birth to death on my Emma Hunt that I need but I was just wondering if she answered an advertisment for the role of companion.
Regarding the other memers of the address in 1921 I just wondered what had happened to them moving into the future.
I am planning a visit to Whitstable in the summer and looking forward to follwing Emma's footsteps.
I am always appreciative of anything you find regarding the address.

Have you found Waypost House? Did you know that it is a Grade II listed building? This is the description from Historic England.

Quote
BORSTAL HILL 1. 5273 (West Side) No 4 (Waypost House) TR 16 NW 4/24 II GV 2. Early C18 2 storey building with attic and tiled roof. 3 windows 1st floor. 1 hipped dormer. Red brick. Modillion eaves course consisting of 3 courses of bricks, the centre course inserted diagonally. All modern windows. Tiled roof over modern extension to the south of single storey.

They don’t have a photo, but there is one here:

There are details of the house in the 1910 Valuation Survey ("Lloyd George Domesday"), dating from 1910-1915 (unfortunately this valuation has no date). The owner was Thomas W Vitty, Eversleigh, Tankerton, Whitstable, who was the freeholder, and the occupant was Theodore Wright, who was paying an annual rent of £20. The surveyor valued the site at £700 and described it thus:

Quote
An old fashioned brick & tile house, flush. Two bays Gd. Flr. & dormer attic. 3 dormer attics at rear.
Contains hall, 2 reception rooms and lobby.
1st floor 3 bedrooms, bath W.C. landing large attic.
large billiard room at side. Detached brick & tile washhse.
timber lodge. Garden at rear.

Added: I have a candidate for Theodore Wright who died in Q3 1912, and an August 1913 newspaper item refers to “Messrs Chas. King of Waypost House corner of Joy Lane and Borstall Hill” so it seems that the King family moved in to the house around that time.
