Post by: Bunnygirl on Tuesday 25 March 25 07:52 GMT (UK)
Hi Everyone,
I'm trying to find information on the Cooper family from Gt Glen. According to other family trees on A*****Y I believe them to be Non Conformist. But I'm having trouble finding any records at all.
I have George Cooper married in Thurlaston 26 Feb 1799 to Ann Jesson Trying to find who their children were and when they were born/baptised

Any help much appreciated

Hard to know if the same couple but Bapts St Mary, Hinckley to GEORGE/ANN Cooper;

GEORGE 20 Mar 1805, birth 14 Jan 1805
MARY ANN 1 Mar 1808, birth 22 Aug 1807
GEORGE 18 Oct 1809
ELIZA 18 Oct 1809

+ a ANN Cooper buried same Church 17 Mar 1822 age 44

(FreeREG)

EDIT looked at a Tree and they quote George dying 1855 Billesdon

1851 George Cooper born 1790 Gt Glnn (sic), Leicestershire, is unmarried!
1841 he has no Wife or children with him in Glen Magna.
Abode Gt Glenn

The marriage record has George of "Kirkby Mallory" and Ann of "Normanton Torville". A witness is a Sarah Jesson.

FindMyPast baptism (image)
William, son of Geo. & Ann Cooper of Normanton was baptized 21 Aug (1799).

The marriage licence on FindMyPast is very difficult to read but mentions a Richard Jesson of Normanton. The transcript shows age 19 against Ann and 24 against George - occpn. farmer.

Thanks Trish1120
Yes that's George's death. Death certificate states a farmer grazier of Gt Glen. Present at the death a Mary Harrison of Nottingham no relationship to George shown.
I have looked to see who this Mary Harrison was and found a Mary Cooper of Great Glen marrying John Harrison 3 June 1822 and then found on census living in Nottingham. So maybe she was George's daughter? Her marriage states she was 27 at time of marriage so she was born about 1795 so probably not the Hinckley one..
Thanks again Trish

EDIT
Yes that's the William Cooper I'm trying to get back on. He marries Elizabeth Waldren 6 August 1829 in Oadby

"Mary, on the 11th inst. at Great Glen, age 59, wife of George Cooper, gent".
and a 30 Jul 1831 death notice of -
On the 25th inst, in his 80th year, much respected George Cooper, gent of Great Glen

Re the 1855 Billesdon death of George Cooper, the newspaper death notices give his age as 65. The GRO death registration also has age 65. His burial record shows 65.

A YoB of 1790 does not "fit" a 1799 marriage?

Thankyou very much hanes teule
Yes I agree the YOB and marriage does'nt "fit". I need to look into it all tomorrow. I thought if I could find some baptisms that might help piece it together.
Many thanks for the newspaper information I will add to tree and see how it all fits in.

I was looking at the will of a George Cooper 1855 Gt. Glen on the national archives, do you have the will? Probate 20th Oct 1855 Prerogative Court of Canterbury.

He mentions siblings including a Mary Harrison married to John.

Hi Willsy
Yes I found the Will yesterday so not had chance to do anything yet... but it looks hard going as my eye sight is not that good now a days.
So Mary Harrison is his sister not his daughter?  I've got George born about 1775 & Mary about 1795

Looks like we are both researching very similar surnames!

Hope this will help you out

The other sister mentioned is Eliza Coleman, her husband Henry Freeman Coleman esq. also.

Married at St.Margaret 1 Oct. 1824 by Lic.
Marriages witnesses Edward Chater and George Cooper-looks like there are a couple of letters after his name  ???
Everybody signed the register

George's will mentions a brother William

The lic. for Elizabeth to Henry Freeman Coleman states Elizabeth is 26yrs and upwards, of Great Glen and a spinster; hoping to find some baptisms I came across

Non-Conformist baptisms
Presbyterian
Great Meeting Unitarian Chapel, Leicester
Parents George and Mary, parish of Great Glen
George Cooper 13 Feb 1790

and you are right about Mary 1795

hanes teulu found both of the marriages for the Cooper girls in the newspaper so I looked for George Cooper 1831 and he left a will also, PCC.

The will dated 24 March 1825
Wife Mary, sons George and William ( William isn't 21 yet)
17 Dec 1831 proved and granted to George Cooper the son and sole executor

St Cuthbert Churchyard George's burial 1855 with parents George and Mary

Thank you very much Willsy.
Well before I start doing to much on the Gt Glen Cooper's I need to verify my William Cooper who marries Elizabeth Waldren 6 Aug 1829 in Oadby. License states William a bachelor aged 24 & Elizabeth of Oadby aged 18yrs + with consent of her mother Elizabeth Waldren widow.
So if age of William is correct he would have been born about 1803/4/5.  The one I have on my tree at present is William son of George & Ann Cooper baptized 21 August 1799 at Thurlaston

So more research to do!
Thanks again for your help it's much appreciated

Hi Willsy

Thank you very much.
Well I think that confirms I was going in the right direction.
William's age on Marriage seems to be born about 1804/5  the baptism I have for him is 1799 Thurlaston  ?

His burial in 1859 shows age was 53 years . I have his Will he does'nt mention any children by name he has a few under the age of 21 and Elizabeth  has already died in 1851 so he appoints 2 guardians

Thank you again

I'm looking at the noncon baptism registers (on the Leic FHS CD) and there's no Eliza Cooper with a father George listed at all. Neither, come to that, is  there a Mary or a william!

Perhaps the index is incomplete? Perhaps the family "converted" to non-conformism after the birth of their children? Where were the children born, according to censuses?

I've found the baptism of George Cooper of Great Glenn; son of George and Mary Cooper, b 9 Jan 1790 and bapt 13 Feb 1790 (non-con; (presbytarian); bapt in Leicester).

This George's gravestone confirms that he died in 1855 was a Gent, and was the son of George and Mary Cooper.

His parents are also buried at Great Glenn; George Cooper, gent, died 25 July 1831 age 79,and in the same grave, his wife Mary, died 11 March 1825, age 59.

Marriage licence in 1796 between George Cooper of Great Glenn and Mary BURGESS of Leicester. George was a farmer and grazier, age 30 years; Mary was 20, and of the parish of St Martin.

Note that one of William and Elizabeth Cooper's children was given the middle name of Burges ---

Yes I have a Mary Burgess Cooper born 1845 Enderby. GRO has mothers maiden name as Waldren.
Will see if I can piece it all together. I need to do the Gerge Cooper Will of 1855 in hopes it gives more names.
Do you know what number CD you have from LRFHS as it may be worth getting one?

Thanks again

My CD is apparently "CD no.1; Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland Indexes to Nonconformist Baptisms 1706 -c.1921 and Burials 1663 - 1978".

I can't see this on the LRFHS website now so maybe it's been discontinued?

I'm happy to do lookups for other Leic board regulars though!

There's the will of George Cooper of Great Glen, gentleman, who died in 1798; his gravestone suggests that he was 81 years old. His will names the following:
His son George Cooper - executor
Another son Edward Cooper
Granddaughter Lidea Mary Folwell
Daughter Mary Thornton and her 4 children (unnamed, all under 21)
Grandson George Cooper, the son of George

The 1831 will of George Cooper the Elder, Great Glen,Gentleman, names the following:
Oldest son George Cooper - executor
Youngest son William Cooper (not yet 21 at the time of writing, which was 1825)
Wife Mary Cooper

The 1855 will of George Cooper, gentleman of Great Glen, has the following family members:
Sisters Mary Harrison (wife of John Harrison) and Eliza Coleman
Brother in law Henry Freeman Coleman
Brother William Cooper
He also mentions various friends, a minister, servants; and the children of Mary, Eliza and William, but doesn't name the children.
This was the most verbiose of these wills and I found the most difficult to read; I hope I haven't omitted anyone important.

So this all hangs together nicely with all the findings above.

Of particular interest re your William is the fact that he was under 21 in 1825, so he can't have been the 1799 baptism that you found.

Remember that Mary was described as George's 2nd daughter when she married in 1824?

This might be her older sister:

Jane Susanna, eldest daughter of George Cooper, m John Baker Esq, of Bythorn, Huntingdonshire, at Great Glenn on 6 Nov 1817.
The marriage licence gives Jane's age as 25. John was a widower.
Witnesses Edward Chater and Mary Cooper.

(Note again that William and Elizabeth called one of their children Jane Susanna)

I couldn't find baptisms for the older generation but there are also non-conformist bap. for-

Bond Street Independent

all have parents Henry Freeman Coleman and Elizabeth Cooper,
her parents are named only and as George and Mary

Hester Eliza Coleman b. 21 Sep 1827 19 Nov 1827
Henry Freeman George Coleman b 15 Feb 1829 bap. 25 Mar 1829
Mary Evans Coleman b. 9 Jun 1831 bap. 9 Jul 1831
George William Coleman b. 15 Dec 1834 bap. 13 Nov 1835
Eliza Sherrard Coleman b. 19 Jan 1833 and bap. 27 Feb 1833

In the index, what looks to be Henry the elder's bap. parents Henry and Hester, is a brother John Sherrard Coleman

Following on from Annie65115 post for Jane Susanna

Leicester Journal 7 May 1841

On the 3rd inst. aged 49, Jane Susanna, wife of Mr. John Baker, of Barnwell St. Andrew, near Oundle, Northamptonshire, and the eldest daughter of the late Geo. Cooper, Esq. of Great Glenn, in this county, deeply regretted by an extensive and most attached circle of relatives and friends.

There are some non-conformist baptisms online for Barnwell, Jane's parents are listed as George and Mary Cooper.

There's also some baptisms on IGI as well, if you have an account , searching for a Baker birth with father as John Baker and mother as Jane Susanna Cooper, you should find some of the children born in Bythorn; again, her parents are listed as George and Mary Cooper.

And I've done the George Thornton of Blaby Will 1865 he also mentions Cooper's Blunt's and Allen all related somehow to the Coopers
