Hello All
I wonder if anyone can suggest a date for the attached photo postcard of Chapel village, near Kirkcaldy?
Unfortunately, it’s a photo of the photo so I can’t examine the back for clues. As it was such a small settlement, I’m hoping to identify Crawford family if I can confirm the date
My guess would be about 1900 but would appreciate better informed suggestions if it’s possible to do so from the font used, the overall presentation, or the clothing
Many thanks
John

Around 1900 sounds about right

Thank you very much
I thought it was a bit of a big ask, and 1900 was just a guess so I really appreciate your reply. Thank you
Best regards

It's around then but I'd put it as a little later into the Edwardian period.
Could you scan the back, please?
A pity there are no females - their clothing would be a better indicator!

PS - just spotted a woman in the background but not sure if there's enough detail.

Thank you - that’s interesting - so somewhere between 1900-1910, but more likely the latter part?
Unfortunately, I don’t have the postcard. It’s a screenshot from the only picture I’ve been able to find of the village
I noticed the woman too - I thought she might be more useful in dating the picture but, yes, she is blurred so difficult. The men’s outfits seem less subject to change over time, especially the bonnets
Thanks again

Not a help with the date, but I’m pretty sure that this has been taken at the south end of Chapel Road, looking north towards the Lomond Hills. The shadows suggest near midday looking north, and you can get a similar view of the distant hills on streetview although the area is much more built up of course.

What a fascinating and unexpected insight - I love that
Thank you very much - that really helps build a fuller picture in the mind

Assuming it is copied fron a postcard, it must be 1902 or later because it would have a "divided back" i.e. address and message on the same side of the card, introduced 1902 in the UK.

That is why I asked, Molly, but unfortunately John doesn't have the back.

Thank you
It is unfortunate that I don’t have access to the back but I appreciate the information about dating the different formats
I’m a novice so will store that nugget away for future use
Best regards

This postcard has appeared on some of the 'Old Fife' facebook pages. According to the 'Old Fife (Official)' website it is dated 1905.

Thank you SO much
That is a fabulous piece of information - couldn’t have asked for more
Thank you also for the mention of the Fife boards. I’ll certainly take a look
