My mum's father was born to an unknown father, he was fostered out, his mother never acknowledged him and certainly never told him who his father was. We have found his mother in the 1911 census as a servant, and for a couple of reasons my mum's brother thought someone else in that household might be the father - not least that servants didn't get much time off to go out.
My mum is still with us but her brother died a few years ago, so she is available (and willing) to take a DNA test but he isn't. The thing is I'm not sure which test would be correct to take when looking for her paternal grandfather. Does anyone have any advice please?
Obviously I'm aware that I'm reliant on some descendant of my great-grandfather having taken a test and posted it.

Ydna is only passed down through the male line. Looks like you are restricted to Autosomal dna.
I think Ancestry would be the best, you can upload your results to other sites from Ancestry but not vice versa. They also have the largest amount of people who have tested.

I highly suggest that you buy a DNA test kit from Ancestry, I see it as £59 + postage.
Please do not be tempted by a lower cost test from another Company.
They have by far the biggest database of users.
Once you have registered the kit and created an Ancestry account that is all you really need to do for now.
Until the results are back then learning about DNA and how to use it will be time well spent.
Once you have an understanding of using DNA then a copy of the Ancestry results can be downloaded and uploaded to Gedmatch and My Heritage, this will maximise the available DNA database.
There are three types of DNA test:-
atDNA which is the type of test Ancestry, My Heritage, 23&Me sell and it covers both sexes.
yDNA only looks at what is passed male to male, ftDNA sell the most applicable test kit and the one to use is their 111, which can be upgraded by payment of an additional fee at a later date.
mtDNA is passed Mother to children of both sexes but only her Daughter will pass on the gene to her children and only female children will pass it on to their children.

Absolute slam dunk no brainer right decision!! Do that first and then follow up with other options if you want or need to

@Biggles50 and @youngt
Just to thank you both again, I now have the results if the test and am working my way through. It turns out I have DNA in common with people descended from people who are ancestors of our suspect. (Grandparents of both his father and mother). So I need to do the due diligence of confirming there is no other "route" of ancestry but we "may" have confirmed the father.

Sounds like great results sonfar.
If your Uncle had children then if one of them took a DNA test the results should help to confirm your thoughts on the Father.
