This is the first time I've seen "Unknown. No medical attendant" given in the cause of death box on a certificate.
Other sudden deaths I've seen have always been investigated by the coroner.
This is on the death certificate of a 12 year girl and the informant was an uncle who was "in attendance" at the death.
I haven't been able to find any newspaper reports relating to the case.
Sometimes finding things out just raises more questions!

A Medical Certificate stating cause of death wasn't required until 1874.
In 1926, an Act of Parliament made it unlawful to dispose of a dead body before a registrar's certificate or a coroner's order had been issued.
When was your death?

Jane's death was in 1868.
I have other death certificates from around that time and there has always been a cause of death stated.
-
What was her name? I know you said you have looked for a newspaper account, happy to look in newspapers I have access to.

That's kind of you.
Jane Ebenezer, died 10th March 1868 in Llangeitho, Cardiganshire, aged 12.
Informant: David Pugh of Llangeitho, present at the death.

Sorry, I couldn't find anything either, searching under various search terms.

"Jane Ebenezer, died 10th March 1868 in Llangeitho, Cardiganshire, aged 12."
When and where was the death registered.
-
I'm assuming it was this death:
Jane EBENEZER March qtr 1869 Tregaron (11b/60) aged 12.
Shropshire Lass has the certificate.

That's the one - but the year was 1868.

If the informant was unable to give the cause of death, then it could be left blank, so you do occasionally see such examples (even after 1874).
If it was an illness rather than something like a sudden collapse then there would be no reason for the coroner to be involved.

I have a death cert from 1846 which says cause "unknown, no medical attendant".

That's exactly what's on Jane's certificate.
I've never seen it before but it's good to know that it's a phrase that was used.
