Ive found my 5th Great Grandfather, Joseph Bown who was baptised at Hognaston on 29 Jul 1759. The register says "Jul 29 - Joseph the son of Edward and Sarah Bown privately baptised and brought into the congregation Aug 12".
What does this mean?
Thanks.

Usually it means that the child wasn't expected to survive, so the baptism was done at home.
When the baby did survive, the 2nd part of the christening (brought into the congregation) was carried out in church.

I'd say he was baptised privately at home very soon after birth - perhaps he wasn't expected to live very long, but then a couple of weeks later, when it seemed he would survive, or at least able to be taken to church, he was baptised again in the church - 'brought into the congregation'.
