Hi,
My direct ancestor iis John Wall (1621-1687) of Darley, Derbyshire/. I haver quite a bit of information about him but his wife Troth remains a mystery. In his will she is referred to as Troth Wall as is her burial record 15 July 1692. I cannot find a record of her birth, baptism or their marriage record.
I found some information which did not really add up that her father Anthony Troth was from Feckenham, Worcestershire. However, I believe that Troth is John Wall's wife Christian name not her unmarried surname.
Any help would be appreciated.

Where and when were their children baptised

In case you haven't seen them, John and Troth's wills are available on FindMyPast.

They had sons Anthony, William, John, Stephen and David. (Except David is only mentioned in Troth's will, not in John's.)

Hi. Thank you for your efforts regarding missing information regarding John Wall and his wife Troth.
I see that you have all come to the same road block as I have:
a} cannot find a marriage record for John Wall and wife Troth
b) cannot find a date of birth or baptismal record for troth ??? (do not know her last name which makes things hard}
John Wall was baptised in Darley (father George) and he and wife Troth lived and died at Wensley, Darley. Derbyshire. I have both their burial records and wills.
Their children seem to have been baptised at Darley.
One thought that has occurred to me (and this is a stab in the dark) is that Troth came from a family who were not Church of England and her recordsmay not be availabld.
Thank you again for your help.

I looked for any Troth/Troath/Throthea's born in Derbyshire 1618-1625 and there are about 8.
Maybe their Fathers left a Will?
Hopefully naming a Daughter as Mrs Wall.

One thought that has occurred to me (and this is a stab in the dark) is that Troth came from a family who were not Church of England and her records may not be available.
More likely she was born in a parish which has no surviving records for that time. Looking at a few neighbouring parishes, Bonsall has nothing before 1634, Matlock 1637. It is also common for there to be gaps in records from the Civil War and Commonwealth times, 1640s and 1650s.

Thank you David for your suggestion that nearby oarish records may not be available as their start date is likely to be later than Troth's birth. I will look into this.
Thabks everyone again for your help.

I too have John Wall 1621 on my tree, but have failed to find any more about Troth. I have traced some earlier generations starting with Richard Wall 1515- 1548 and his wife Clements Birke. However it is some years since I looked at this line so am not confident that they are correct. I have the Darley PR's on disc so will need to review my evidence.
I am descended through Sarah Wall (1761) marrying Richard Milner (1764)
I would be interested if you manage to turn anything up on Troth!

Hi,
Looking at the wills on Findmypast I have doubts that the wife of John Wall was named Troth, this is the named entered in the book of Wills but it is not the name written in her actual will or that of her husband. It is also not the name written on the front of her will.
Think you will find that her Christian name is EROTH.
Do you have approximate date of the marriage or date of birth of their first child?

In all the instances of "Troth" in those two wills the first letter is a form of "T" that was fairly common at the time. The bit on the front was written by a different person, but you can tell it's a "T" because the abbreviated word before the name is "Tm" (standing for Testament) and the first letter is the same as in the name.
The form used within the wills is quite similar to an "E" but if you compare it with the first letter of "Executor" you can see an important difference. The "T" is composed of two strokes, with the pen taken off the paper in-between, while the "E" is one stroke made up of two curves.
Troth was a fairly common name in Derbyshire. If you search Ancestry's index of early Derbyshire parish registers for Troth you get over 200 records, adding Troath and Truth puts it up to about 300.
Searching for Eroth or similar gives just 6 records, and on inspection every one is a misreading of Troath!

Thank you both Spendlove and David. I have been looking for people named Troth in Derbyshire and found a few with a date which might fit. One example (and it is no more than that!) is Troath Towndrow baptised 22 September 1622 in Ashover daughter of Thomas and Rosamunde. I have not found a marriage record for Troath. Irritatinly her father's will does not seem to contain any family names.
I have mot found a marriage record either for John Wall and his wife . Their first child Grace was baptised in Darley on 29 June 1645. John Wall and his wife lived in Darley all of their married lifves and their burial records are also for Darley. John Wall was buried 17 March 1687 in Darley and his wife 15 July 1692 in Darley.
I will have to wait and ask my son to have another look at their wills as I have very bad eyesight and i have to wear my glasses and use a magnifying glass which is a bit of an encumbrance. However, both of you have persuaded me to have another good look at the writing on wills.
Thank you both David amd Spendlove for your information ot is very useful

Which will is for Troth's father? I've seen wills for Thomas Townerowe of Ashover 1623, Ashover 1640 and Chesterfield 1686 but none seem to fit.
My ancestor John Bower of Walton made a will in 1619 naming a Thomas Townerow as a supervisor, but I haven't found if he was actually a relative. (John's son George later married an Isabell Townerow.)
