Vincent Swallow and Nellie Ayto married at Grantham in 1928.....They had a daughter, Patricia A Swallow, born 1929 and died 1936.....I am trying to find out if they had another daughter, born around 1934.....this daughter possibly went on to marry a local businessman and Justice of the Peace, but I can find no record of her......I am beginning to wonder if she was adopted....I should point out that all (apart from the JP) are now deceased......Any help appreciated.....

I am trying to find out if they had another daughter, born around 1934
Do you know where she was in 1939?
Doesn't seem to be a birth registration for more Swallow/Ayto children.
As she is deceased can you name her?
-
The 1939 register does show a third person in the Swallow household, but is "blacked out" and therefore assumed to be still alive.
-
Looks like there is an obituary for Vincent died 1974 which might name family.
-
Yes, thanks for that,
just seen the 1939 register and I'm assuming that it IS her......I would rather not name her, as she has only recently died.....I just find it strange that there is no birth record for her.......
-
That's fine with not naming her.
Her marriage, if you can find one, should have a fathers name to confirm but am guessing you haven't found that either :-\
You could be right and she was adopted perhaps after their own daughter passed away.
-
She married in 1956, at Grantham........
-
Have you purchased Vincents will. That may name her
-
No, I am still trying to confirm that she WAS a distant relative of ours.....purely to fill in gaps in the family tree.........

Grantham Journal 28th November 1936
Grantham's Most Popular Child
Death yesterday at Nottingham
Voted most recently the most popular child in the Grantham District, seven year old Patricia Ann Swallow, only child of Mr and Mrs Vincent Swallow of Manthorpe, passed away at Nottingham Children's Hospital yesterday.
Patricia had been a patient at Nottingham for 22 weeks with a serious illness.
-
Most interesting, thank you.....so in 1936 Patricia was an only child.........the person I am looking for was supposedly born in 1934.....I'm either on the wrong track, or she was adopted......
-
A copy of Vincents will is only £1.50 :). It may give a clue.
Is there any mention of her marriage in the newspapers
-
Marriage certificate? Or would you assume that Vincent Swallow would be named as the father on there and be no further forward :-\
-
Not sure about the will, but when he died in 1974, Vincent was living in a small hamlet on the other side of Grantham to where he and Nellie used to live......interestingly the JP and his wife lived in the same place.......
-
Del80, I have from your info worked out who the "daughter" is. Whilst she may not have had the Swallow surname at birth are you willing to share a date of birth. Any findings can be sent to you by a pm.

Yes, very recently.
The marriage was written up in the local newspaper.
-
Just an update....someone with local knowledge, and who knew the family, assures me that the lady in question was "adopted from within the family".....Thanks to all that replied, but best left there for now I think.....
