I am looking at Richard Peter Manning died aged 82 in 1850 registered West Derby.
The story is that he had been in an Asylum for many years after killing a man in a duel in 1799.
I can't find him in 1841, would there have been records for asylum inmates then.
-
There's a death announcement in the Manchester Courier, 19 January 1850 (attached)
Died at the private asylum of Dr. Litchfield, Walton Lodge, near Liverpool.

Blood spilled on Red Brook Field – the Whitchurch Duel
THE two men faced one another in Red Brook Field in Whitchurch.
Little was said and within moments one lay dead and the other would spend the rest of his life in an asylum.
This is the tragic tale of the Whitchurch Duel of October 22, 1799.
The two men had disputed ownership of property and arranged to meet in Whitchurch.
Captain Thomas Jones had travelled from Wrexham and Richard Manning, a surgeon, had travelled from Oswestry.
The trial heard witnesses of the event who spoke of what had happened in the build up to the duel.

Thank you.
This started when I came across Thomas Jones burial entry in 1799 Wrexham. The entry states how and where he died. It was quite a surprise to see all that.
-
Agreed there is a lot of detail, which I have to say made for a good read :D :D
-
Where Walton Lodge was is now in Stanley Park, the part off Walton Lane near the Isla Gladstone Conservatory, old map here:-

There's quite a bit on Thomas Jones on Ancestry as well.
-
I wonder whether the Whitchurch Herald item was derived from the comprehensive article, regarding the duel, which appeared in the Wrexham Advertiser issue of Saturday, 16th December 1882.
As found by searching for: "Richard-Pate-Manning" in Welsh Newspapers Online.

Well it seems that his name actually was Richard Pate Manning, not Richard Peter Manning.
His mother was a Pate.
Little was said and within moments one lay dead and the other would spend the rest of his life in an asylum.
Do we know he was admitted to an asylum right afterwards? It could have been some time later. Albeit he seems to have spent many years at Walton Lodge.
The death date in that article is wrong, 7 January seems to be the date of his burial at Wrexham

Thank you both. The OCR is quite bad on this but it's just about understandable. I'm not sure what it's all about.

I found the baptism of Richard Pate Manning in 1771 Wrexham, father Richard Manning apothecary. No mother named. There's nothing more on his father in Wrexham.
There's a Richard Manning apothecary buried in Wrexham in 1763 who may be the grandfatherof Richard Pate.
In 1720 Mary daughter of Richard Manning apothecary was baptised in Wrexham so they were around Wrexham

Will of Richard Manning 1778. Richard Pate Manning was his son. Only Child ? He would have been 7.
Wife Margaret.
A Thos Jones is a witness, but that doesn't count for much, there were dozens around Wrexham.

The newspaper article linked to states that Dr Manning had been Capt Jones' ward, so maybe it was the same person if he was connected to the making of the will

In 1841 Richard Pate Manning is in the Walton Lodge Licensed Madhouse. :o
The proprietor is a Richard Squires, his wife Mary and 5 children aged between 5 and 1.
There are about 25 men who have mostly well to do occupations and 8 ladies.
By 1851 the Squires have left. it seems that the couple are living in separate households, Richard is with his mother and now working as a coal merchant in West Derby. Richard died in 1854.

Thanks . A nice find .I should have known our Local historian had already found this . if you scroll to page 275 there is Cornish Hall. My ancestor Thomas Wilcoxon was born there 1803 and the family had been there as farmers from about 1780. They would have known all about this .
I was lucky enough to visit Cornish a few years ago, I know it`s nothing to do with this thread but thought I`d add it anyway ;D
