dear all,
wow! fantastic, many thanks.
I have been searching for the father John who dies (although I did enter Tamar as spouse?)
Just shows that you shouldn't just concentrate on one family member, silly of me really as Tamar is a less common name and more likely to yield results,,, I know this ::)
-
dear all,
I am so glad with the census results and interestingly enough on looking further on the census pages I find son George Rogers c1823 living with wife Sarah a little further down the street from 1851 until 1871,a great insight into the family!!!
I am now trying to discover the parents of John Rogers c1799. Census details reveal that he was born c1801 in Essex (possibly Chelmsford or Bocking?) On searching I find 3 candidates:
i. John Rogers c1800 Hatfield Heath, Essex, parents: William and Melicent Rogers
ii John Rogers c 1801 Southminster Essex. parents Susan and John
iii. John Rogers c1799 Wethersfield, Essex, parents Susan and John
Again, any help, hints or advise are very welcome ::)
-
the John Rogers c1800 born at Hatfield Heath, Essex seems to be eliminated as there is a John Rogers c1800, born Essex married to an Ann with 2x children living at Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex in the 1841 census (2,3 miles away).
Would the marriage entry at St. Mary's, Bocking, Essex (22-11-1818) mention the parents names?
Are these church records on line somewhere?

I didn't realise that Family search had actual scans of parish Church entries, Fantastic! thanks for that.
Unfortunately John's parents are not mentioned, although maybe one of the witnesses may be related in some way? (Abram Carter and Bary Harris?)
Also many thanks for the death reg ref's.
-
dear all,
On studying the marriage entry further I see that the witness 'Abram Carter' appears on 4 of the 6 marriage entries, so I must assume he is some kind of payed witness? or spends a lot of time in the church clutching a quill ::)
Looking at the second witness, its is definitely a sirname of 'Harris' and the transcription suggests 'Barry' with one 'r' but could also be 'Benny' with one 'r'.
I am wondering if it may be 'Benj :' short for Benjamin? This being based on 'Abraham' being shortened to 'Ab:m' or am I looking too deeply?
-
Looks like a dot over a j to me so I would say it refers to the name Benjamin.
-
I agree about the dot indicating a “j”. There also seems to be a colon there, and perusing the Wikipedia entry for ‘colon’ I learn that in Early Modern English (ie up to late 17th century) this was used to signify an abbreviation – perhaps this useage lingered longer?
-
GRO Index has
Eliza Rogers reg Chelmsford September quarter 1838 Vol 12 page 30
mother's maiden name DAVIS.
-
Its a long shot, but I'm gonna try and find a connection between Jeremiah Harris and either either Tamar Davies's family or to a Rogers family which may give a clue to a sibling or other relative of John Rogers c1799 ::)
Firstly to make a list of candidates to be Jeremiah Harris,,,, I must be mad ;D
-
Possible burial for John Rogers 12 February 1848 age 73 per register at Wethersfield
age 74 on GRO Index.
Born circa 1774/5?
-
marriage certificate: John Rogers and Tamar Davis.
OK, I've been working on this for a week now and thought I had managed to link the witness Benjamin Harris to the Tamar Davis side of things.
I found a Benjamin Harris born 1798 at Bocking, married to Elizabeth Belts in 1817 also at St. Marys, Bocking.
On looking further, I found them living North Street, St. Peter, Sudbury and living next door was the Rayner family: John, wife Sarah and kids: George, Charles, Joseph and Ellen. Anyway, Tamar Davis's parents were Thomas Davis and Tamar Rayner, so I thought I had found a link, but, however I tried to link these 2 Rayner families, I just couldn't manage it ???
Well, that's the update and Its back to the drawing board for me :P
Think I will simply scan other trees to see If I can get a jumpstart to discover where John Rogers 1799 comes from ::)
