Hi all,
I am a bit confused as to where my relatives would be buried. I pulled the registers from Scotland's people but it does not contain burial location. Are the registers and death certificates different?
Michael Curran - December 27, 1939, address at time of death - 81 Scott Street
Margaret Curran (his wife) - September 13, 1935, address at time of death - 19 Scott Street
Thanks much!

Hello
Death certificates in Scotland don't include burial location - they did for a short period in the early days of statutory registration from 1855 to c1861, but this was discontinued. I know that there are now various forms that need completed to authorise a burial or cremation, but these aren't publicly available, so the death certificate will contain all of the available information.
There are/were three main cemeteries in and around Motherwell that were open for burials when your relatives died - Cambusnethan which is in Wishaw, Airbles Cemetery in Motherwell, and St Patrick's Cemetery in New Stevenston, which is a Catholic cemetery. I have Catholic relations from the Motherwell area and some are buried in Cambusnethan and others at New Stevenston - the latter being where the Diocese of Motherwell has its own burial plot for priests of the diocese.
However, it is possible they could have been buried somewhere else - such as the Globe/Forgewood cemetery, also in Motherwell if there was an earlier family plot there.
The Heritage Centre at Motherwell has burial records for the local cemeteries, so might be worth a visit if you're local - I don't know if they will undertake research on your behalf, as I've been fortunate enough to be able to visit in person.
Best wishes

Thanks Rosie, I think this couple had children buried in the Globe cemetery in Motherwell. (Dalziel Parish cemetery). I'll have a look.

There are four children in total, two in common ground and two in a purchased plot. No adults so I'm guessing they are in St Pat's, New Stevenston. I'll try to find out.
The Globe interments are -
STILLBORN CURRAN, 20 Ann Street (Motherwell).
Parents - Michael Curran & Maggie Ferns.
Interred in common ground on 1st July 1893.
BRIDGET CURRAN, aged 2 years, 107 Windmillhill.
Parents - Michael Curran & Margaret Fern.
Interred in common ground on 17th December 1897.
MINNIE MARGARET CURRAN, aged 10 weeks, 57 Millar Street.
Parents - Michael Curran & Margaret Fern.
Interred in C D 138, 2nd July 1906.
GEORGE CURRAN, aged 14 days, 51 Millar St. (Could be 57?)
Parents - Michael Curran & Margaret Fern.
Interred in C D 138, 27th August 1908.

No sign of Michael in my 1911 Motherwell Directory, which seems to be a list of householders and adult men living at the same address who were eligible to vote.
In my 1925 Motherwell & Wishaw Directory, which is split into a Householders list and in another part, there is a list of those eligible to vote, there is, at 19a Scott Street,
CURRAN Michael, steelworker. (who must be the householder).
In the 2nd section, for 19a Scott Street, there are the following adults eligible to vote.
CURRAN, MICHAEL.
CURRAN, JOHN.
CURRAN, JOSEPH.
I'm presuming the above three will be the father and 2 adult sons?
19 Scott Street was a tenement building consisting of six houses (apartments or flats, depending on where in the world you are!). 19a would have been on the ground floor.
I wouldn't have thought the street numbers went as high as 81? Could be worth checking. In this very small world, I went to school in Scott Street and now, many decades later, I do voluntary work from an office in the same street, so I know it well and can't imagine where number 81 would have been, it's a fairly short street.

According to a 1934 edition of Motherwell Times, a Joseph Curran lived at Park Street and was son of a Michael Curran of 19 Scott Street.
A 1950 edition of Motherwell Times has a birthday mention (Odeon Cinema club) for a female McFetridge of 81 Scott Street.

Hi - thank you so much for the info, and apologies for my late reply. I can confirm that these are my ancestors. Can I ask where you obtained this information? I am in the states. Thanks again!

Yes, John and Joseph are sons of Michael.
At the time of Michael's death he was living with his son Fred (81 Scott Street, death cert attatched). Fred had a son that passed away on Dec 31 1947 named John "Jackie" Curran. Mothers maiden name (O'neill). I was able to find an obituary but it did not mention burial place. I am thinking maybe Michael may be buried where Jackie could be?

I will try to find Michael's burial place.
I smiled when I saw the death certificate you posted, the Joseph Owens who lived in Vulcan street had a son, also called Joseph, who was a good friend of my grandfather's. Joe kept pigs and my granny was never too happy when he came to visit (at least 2 or 3 times a week) as he left a smell in the house. The Owens family lived in that house in Vulcan St well into the 1960s.
Thanks for the memories Cemb726

I have a copy of the Globe cemetery burial records, they were transcribed by a group of amateurs about 30 years ago, unfortunately, they didn't make a very good job of the work and I have found many mistakes over the years. The original books are with North Lanarkshire Archives at the Heritage Centre in Motherwell.
