Title: Grenadier Guards soldier?? 1800s
Post by: Kessa on Thursday 13 March 25 04:51 GMT (UK)
Joseph Walkley was born in Stroud in 1810 and served a sentence of 6 mths in Gloucester Gaol in 1831.  I’m trying to find proof that he is the man of the same name, who was in the Grenadier Guards.  I have searched Ancestry and Find My Past and the National Archives.

He may be the Joseph Walkley, 2nd Battalion, 1st Foot Guards in 1841 in Quebec, Canada [from FindMyPast] (which may be why I can’t find him in the English census for 1841).  A Joseph Walkey, private, age 38, born in Stroud was listed with the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards in the 1851 census at St Thomas’s Barrack, Hampshire.

This man was with the 3rd Foot Guards in 1855 when he was granted a pension.  He died in June 1855 at the Grenadiers Hospital aged 44 (info from his death certificate), the army pension records say he was 69 at his death but the date of death is the same as the 44 yr old Joseph Walkley.
How can I prove that the man in the Grenadier Guards is the same man who was born in Stroud in 1810?

Thanks for any assistance.

Long shot;
Based on what you say,

"He died in June 1855 at the Grenadiers Hospital aged 44 (info from his death certificate), the army pension records say he was 69 at his death but the date of death is the same as the 44 yr old Joseph Walkley."

and we take his age,69, away form his death year, 1855, we have a possible DoB of 1786.
With that in mind there is this 1841 Census on Family Search site. Could this be ether of your Josephs???

Like I said long shot but might help sort if there are two Joseph Walkley's around in the Stroud area at the same time.

Thanks for your reply.  That man was born in Kingstanley and the one I am researching was born in Stroud in 1810.
