Hello Rootschatters,
I am hoping someone can help or advise me please.
My grandfather was a harness maker in Dublin. He was born in 1870, and I am trying to find out where he would have learned his trade, or where he would have served his apprenticeship.
I have tried searching on line but with no success.
Has anyone got any ideas where i would find apprenticeship records for this trade in Dublin?
Thank you in advance.
Nora

Perhaps his father and grandfather were in the same trade and he was taught by them.
Can you go further back in his history to find out?
Sorry I don’t know where any apprenticeship records would be found.
-
Hello Milliepede,
Thank you for your reply to my enquiry. I have not been able to get further back as yet, but I will keep trying.
-
Have you found his birth record?
-
Hello Heywood,
Thanks for your reply.
I have not been able to find his birth record so I am stuck and I cannot get further back.
-
What is his name please?
Have you looked in the 1901/1911 census records?

Hello Shanreagh,
Thank you for your reply.
My grandfathers name was Patrick Mitchell. He was a Unitarian, but became Catholic to marry my grandmother.
I have his marriage record, and also his army records. He is on the census too.
I have no idea where to search for his birth records except I know he was born in Dublin in 1870.
Kindest regards,
Nora Lush

Thanks....if you have his marriage certificate could you pl let us know his father's name.
Also having trouble finding Patrick in 1901 or 1911 census in Dublin.

Hello Shanreagh,
Thank you for your reply.
His fathers name was Peter Mitchell, but on his marriage certificate where it asks for his fathers occupation it just has a line drawn through that part.
I am not sure if that means his father is deceased or a pensioner with no occupation.
Kindest regards,
Nora

From several previous posts, you have this information, Nora and here you are wondering about how he learned his trade.
Here is your previous thread re Saddlers in Dublin and I fear you may not get any further
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=765131.0
1901 census shows many Saddlers etc.
There are snippets in Irish Newspapers which advertise Saddlers and Harness makers too.

I would like to express by thanks to LH, Heywood, and Kiltaglassen for all your efforts on my behalf.
You are all so helpful and kind.
I have all the above information, marriage, births, census records etc.,
The one thing I am missing is Patrick Mitchells birth.
I know he was born in St. Thomas parish, in 1870, and I think he was baptized in the old St. Thomas Church on Marlborough Street. I cannot find any birth or baptismal records for that church, so maybe they no longer exist? I seem to have hit a brick wall on this one!
Thanks again.

St. Thomas' Church of Ireland was destroyed during the Civil war along with many of the records, most of the surviving records are on IrishGeneaology - some burn damage can be seen in the registers online. A replacement church was built on a new Street built later, Cathal Brugha Street.
I see that his marriage was in a Catholic Church, does some reference suggest Church of Ireland family ? added : I see the military record service no. 8284 which mention Unitarian as Religion when joining up.
Some sources e.g. military records can give Civil Parish as the reported place of birth, which would fit that area but come under St.. Mary's (Pro-Cathedral) Catholic parish for baptisms etc.
