Here's one for the linguists. The witness John Farrell in the 1898 marriage below, has what looks like a suspended u beside what looks like an f in the middle of his name. Haven't come across this before. What does this signify?

I thought it was the witness John uf Farrell op is referring to

All I see is an upper case script F.
Just a bit more flourished at its starting point than the upper case script F. which starts FARRELL.

I agree, just an extra flourish on the" F".

Yes,that is what I saw,the first twiddley bit is a flourish on the the middle letter F .
His name is John F. Farrel

Thanks all. The Groom was resident in Ballybrophy, and the 1901 Census has a John Francis Farrell in Grange Beg, just north of that town. Solved I'd say.
