Can anyone find my grandmother Flora sometimes Flo Layton sometimes spelt Leighteon born 1889 in Malvern Link, Worcestershire. The only census I cannot find her on and I wonder if she was a supporter of Suffragette Movement, as I have read they refused to be entered onto a Government census report in 1911. It is particularly significant (to me) as my mother was born in 1912 - no known father - and it would be interesting to know where Flo was the year before. Not as the miracle will happen of course, and I can identify her father / my grandfather ! Thanks for any help / ideas.

Who were her parents?
1911 entry Florence Layton b 1890 Malvern Link living with parents Fredk & Mary
Ref piece 17655

I think it's the Flora/Flo daughter of Matthew and Caroline that we might be looking for
-
The 1901 & 1911 only have one Flo* L* b Malvern Link
b 16.10.1889
The one with parents Matthew & Caroline shows 1891 & 1901 birthplace as Leigh although she is not with family in 1911

Thank you for the replies - yes her parents were Matthew and Caroline. I should have included that. I seem to remember an address for her as The Star (pub I presume) Bransford Road, Worcester - how might I find that on the 1911 census ? I have her - and mom - on the 1921 census. Mom is with grandparents in Malvern aged 6 yrs (doesn't fit in with her birth registration), Flo is a Boarder in Birmingham working in laundry, she used to send money back for mom's 'keep'.
Interesting aside - three sisters each had an illegitimate child, each went on to marry in later years and none had another child. Two of the sisters acknowledged they were the mother, Flo never did and mom always called her Aunty Flo. Only in Flo's Will did the truth come out.
Anyway back to 1911 - mom's birth (Elsie May Leighton) was registered in Aston, Birmingham so Flo might have been shipped off to a mother and baby home .

Star Inn Bransford Road in 1911 has
Edward Brown 48
Mary Ann Brown 47 wife
Edith Annie Taylor 32 servant
In theory she could have been living with the father in 1911 and be listed under his surname :-\
When in 1912 was her child born?
-
Thank you for the info on Star Inn - no Flo Layton there then.
-
No afraid not. To search I just typed - Lived in Worcester 1911 and Star in the keyword box and it popped up straight away.
Have you got the exact birth address for where Elsie was born? We could search that in 1911 - or was that where The Star address comes in?
-
Thank you. I will make a note of how to search for a place on Ancestry for the future.
I just have a memory of that address from arrange that time, on a postcard, but don't know what happened to post card. I need to get out mom's birth certificate - which is somewhere in a large box of papers waiting - and waiting - and . . . . . to get sorted and put into a proper book form with photos etc. I have done that for family on my father's side. I will find it and see if there is an address.
When I think back over the years, the amazing help given by folks on this website it has been family history life changing ! I have been able to go on with the research and find the impossible (what seemed to be).

Somewhere in Long Street?
In 1912 she had my mother and the birth address was in Long Street, Aston, Birmingham
Fingers crossed Flora can be found in 1911, but you have been looking a long time.
-
Yes I am very tenacious ! I had forgotten about that entry on Roots. Saves me going through my pile of papers. I do not have membership of A at the moment, but when I do, if I put Long Street into search will I be able to trawl through ? It's having access to the 1921 census has started me searching again.

Hi
1911 and 1921 census are free on ancestry for a bit longer (ends on the 9th I think) so you just need to be registered with them.
You can't search by address in 1911, so you will have to put in keywords. Long St and Long Street. This might bring up a few people called Long living elsewhere in Aston, but never mind!
There is no box for registration districts by name. So either put in Aston as a keyword, or in fact you can put 385 into the Registration District Number box (I think this would be better)
P.S. Don't ask me why you can't search by the name of the RD, but you can by its number (which none of us would normally know!)

I tried searching earlier with Aston and Long St and it seemed a really Long St so well named.
No sign of her though. Pity we don’t have a house number to look for.
Do you remember if she registered the birth herself? If not whoever did would be a clue.

I didn't know the 1911 was free as well, today is the last day for free so will try all sorts of combinations to find Flo on 1911. She was never too accurate in giving her age, usually making herself younger, so will try dates of birth to reflect that. Because of course, what we put into a search has to tie in with whatever the transcriber has put into A. Then tomorrow will tackle the Layton documents to find the copy of her birth certificate. Thank you for all the help.
-
Yes exactly with searching for her, less is more as they say.
Look forward to seeing the birth certificate.

I tried attaching Flo's Will but too large. So here are the details -
When / Where born : 8th October 1912 11 Long Street, Aston
Elsie May
Mother : Flora Leighton, Laundry ironer of 11 Long Street, Aston (also informant)
So long time between birth and registration.
I did wonder if 11 Long Street might have been an unmarried mother's home, but never found any information on that.
I don't know what help it would be to find Flo on 1911 census because that was taken April 1911 and Flo wasn't pregnant until around Feb / March 1912. Though of course one wants to find family being researched on every appropriate census !
Though I might try the FindMyPast website which is available at the library, see if that can offer anything.
