Title: MacGillivray Family
Post by: craigbarwick01 on Wednesday 05 March 25 01:33 GMT (UK)
Hi to all, I am searching for the origins of of a MacGillivray family in Glasgow. I am descended from Malcolm MacGillivray who arrived in Tasmania in 1862 and married Jane Crawford in 1865. On the passenger records his original is listed as Glasgow and I have found a family there with a Malcolm , ( parents Malcolm MacGillivray and Sarah Lockhart )of the correct age and a sister Sarah who through other records emigrated to New South Wales, Australia as well, it appears to be his family. I can’t find info on Malcolm senior, born 1808, no birth records only the marriage register which gives no further  details. All of my family information is coming from census records. My question is whether he could be descended from MacGillivray’s at Inverness, I know the clan was dispersed after the last uprising and it appears as though there are not a lot of records for those times. Are there records available that are not on line but via other contact. Any help would be appreciated
Cheers Craig

No birth, marriage or death dates in your opening post.

1851 census

Malcolm and Sarah marriage in 1830 Glasgow. Three children baptisms available, born 1832 to 1835, Daniel, Agnes, Archibald.

Death certificates for Malcolm and Sarah would give names of both parents.

Sarah died in 1893 in Kelvin, age 83. Mother’s  name- Mair. You need to download the death certificate.

Have you looked at the possible death for Malcolm in 1866?

Thanks Neale1961. Can’t find anything conclusive on Malcolm, but I will get back to Scotland’s People. My resources are a little limited

Scotlands People is the only resource you need.

Sarah Lockhard’s baptism is available, depending on details confirmed from her death.

You need to pinpoint Malcolm’s death, as suggested above, possible in 1866.

Found Sarah’s now, thank you. Nothing comes up for Malcolm, he predeceased Sarah as she is a widow on the death register

I can see the possible death being referred to on Scotlandspeople. Malcolm McGilvray died 1866 aged 61. Mother’s maiden name McKinnon. High Church registration district. GROS ref 644/2/1565.

Always search using wildcards - m*c*g*l*v*r* should pick up all spelling variants.

You need that 1866 death certificate to tell you the full names of Malcolm McG senior's parents.

Thanks Elwyn, it is the correct Malcolm, census ages were all over the place but now I have a better idea of his birth year. His parents were Archibald McGilvray and Ann McKinnon. Thank you all for your assistance
Cheers Craig.

His parents were Archibald McGilvray and Ann McKinnon.

Note
1/ Ann McKinnon is actually Agnes
2/ surnamed spelling variation McGILVRA
3/ Malcolm baptised in 1799

Hi Neale1961, it does look like Ann, if Malcolm died 1866 , age 61 would put his birth around 1805. Definitely interesting information, I have found another Archibald McGilvray in Lanarkshire, maybe the same family

The names Ann and Agnes are sometimes used interchangeably.

Malcolm's age at death is quite a bit adrift from his birth date of 1799. It's just possible that the 1799 Malcolm died young and another later child was given the same name but he baptism record has not survived.

Variations of the name Agnes – Ann, Nan, Nancy.
Accuracy of information on a death certificate is subject to the knowledge / memory of the informant.
I don’t think 5 years difference between actual birth date and age reported at death is anything unusual, but it could be the same name was used again for a later birth.

Possible for Archibald McGilvray in 1841 census, Glasgow

A "cloth lapper" was a textile industry worker who transferred yarn between machines.

Added - I never managed to find your Malcolm in the 1841 census - did you?

Malcolm McGillivray and Sarah Lockhart’s children that I can find, Agnes 1833, Archibald 1836, Sarah 1838, Malcolm 1840, Robert 1849 and Ruth 1852. My assumption is that Agnes was named after Sarah’s mother Agnes Mair but maybe after Malcolm’s mother if she was indeed Agnes also. Maybe shortened to Ann to not confuse the grandmothers

Malcolm and Sarah marriage in 1830 Glasgow.
Three children baptisms available, born 1832 to 1835, Daniel, Agnes, Archibald.

1st born appears to have been Daniel.

Thanks Neale1961, I can only assume that Daniel may have only had a short life or is living with another family member and does not appear on census returns with the family
