In 1891 my grandfather was living in Routledge Terrace, Ryhope. He and his mother lived in other Ryhope streets which I've found on the NLS online 25" OS maps, but I've been unable to find Routledge Terrace, and wondered whether anyone could help, please.
(Incidentally, my grandfather died in 1913 as a result of accidentally falling downstairs at his home in Hugh Terrace after 2 glasses of beer and a small port!)
-
Anne, I cannot find it either. What are the names of the streets before and after it in the census. The name might have been changed or Routledge Terrace may have.e been just what the locals called it which the map makers were not aware of or did not care.
My uncle said he was born at Vinegar Hill in Ryhope which he indicated was just an area known as that to the locals, I have never found Vinegar Hill on a map of Ryhope,
There are obviously Irish connections and there were Irish in Ryhope as witnessed by the fights mentioned in the newspapers.
-
There are a number of newspaper references to "Routledge Terrace, Ryhope Colliery".
-
Following a newspaper item I looked for Robert TROTTER in the 1891 census. He lived at no. 22 Routledge Terrace born about 1844 IIRC.
Census places go
! Leechmere Hall
3 Leechmere Grounds
Silksworth Gate House
1 to 25 Routledge Terrace
1 Hollicarrsides etc
Still could not find on a map. May be one of the streets not named and long since demolished.
-
I think it was renamed Hollycarr Terrace in the 1890's. In 1902 George Cowey lost his dog and gave his address for it's return as 7 Hollycarr Terrace. In 1891 the family was enumerated at 7 Routledge Terrace. On the 1895 OS map it appears to be a 25 household terrace matching the earlier find

Good find sc00p. I looked at Holliccarr Terrace on that map yesterday and saw that it had 25 dwellings, the same as Routledge Terrace on the 1891 census, but just wasn't sure if it had been renamed. Well done. :)

Thank you so much everyone for all your help. That Routledge Terrace was renamed Hollycarr Terrace certainly seems to be the answer to my question. And when I checked on the house numbers, I found that my grandfather was living at 16 Routledge Terrace in 1891, then at 16 Hollycarr Terrace in 1901, so hadn't moved house as I'd imagined.
Spelk mentioned Vinegar Hill. "What’s in a name: Street names of Sunderland" says that Harvey Terrace, Hollycarr Terrace, Hugh Terrace, Leechmere Terrace, Powell Terrace, Sidney Terrace, South View, Streatfield Terrace, Sunderland Terrace and West Terrace were all miners' cottages, no longer in being, that were in an area of Ryhope known as Vinegar Hill. 'They rank as an important part of the village's mining history, however.'
Once again, many thanks to you all.

Yes Rober Ttrotter who was in 1891 at 22 Routledge Terrace is in 22 Hollicar Terrace in 1911. Interesting stuff about Vinegar Hill. I need to check what road uncle was born in.
Edit - My family were in Baden Terrace in 1911 and Burdon Street in 1921. I guess Baden Terrace may have been in Vinegar Hill area. Uncle told me Ryhope was in four parts : the Village, the Colliery, Vinegar Hill and Cauldknuckle (spelling guessed).
Looking at a 1939 map Baden Terrace is in the middle of those mentioned above as being Vinegar Hill. There are others not included in the list above. I would attach screen grab but not sure how on tablet.

Baden Terrace shows here on this 1914 map. :)

I’m left wondering where the area called Cauld Knuckle was. I have found online a picture of Cauld Knuckle school but not where that was. Maybe all the people who were familiar with the use of the name for an area of Ryhope have died.

I think spelk was referring to Cauld Knuckles at Ryhope :-\
There is a post here about the school https://flamingnora.blogspot.com/2019/07/a-walk-on-ryhopes-wild-side.html
Following up on that I'd suggest it might have been this school here https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=17.3&lat=54.87397&lon=-1.37015&layers=168&right=ESRIWorld
On the r-h map you can see the houses in the modern photo and the track between the houses leading to the school.

Thanks JenB and ScOOp. This screenshot show what must have been Cauld Knuckle between the Toll Bar Inn and the school. Main two Streets a century ago were Cory street and Nicholson street.
I think on my visits to Ryhope I've never been to that side of "the tracks" ie north of where the pit was.
Something odd - can't add mage using this laptop. I'll try with Desktop

Things do not seem to be working like I remember. Even using desktop and changing from Safari to Oracle. I click on "Attachments and other options" but do not get the box to add an image from the computer.

I went and looked at the instructions for adding images and found that there I could add and image as you can see here https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=370538.new#new
But why I can not do it here I do not know.
Since Apple have added an AI assistant to "help" me the autocorrect spelling has been really messing things up. Wish I could have refused to accept its help.

The ability to post images is disabled on look up boards.

Thanks JenB.
Myself I have never seen the point of the "Lookup Boards". Means for topics on any county we have to look in two separate places. And how many responses to someone's problem do not include some sort of "Look Up" - even recalling a fact is a lookup from ones memory.
