Hello
Been trying to break long standing brick wall in relation to my paternal great great grandparents...
# Daniel Millan Marble Stone Dresser
# Dianah Millan maiden name Sheridan
Both died sometime before April 1889 from their daughter's Mary Ann Millan's marriage certificate in Dundee.. where she worked as a Sack Machinist marrying William Webster Calender Worker.. when they were 21 and 26... from her DC I know she was born in 1868... I think she was born in Coreside in England...but can't recall where I found this out...
I have tried Family Search... ScotlandsPeople and GRO sites but no luck at all in finding any records of their deaths..
Would love to be able to complete this line on my paternal branch of the family tree..
Any assistance would be gratefully received.
Regards
MarkW

It is the 1891 census transcript that says Mary Ann’s place of birth was Coreside, England
Have you seen the original?
I wonder where that was? Suspect it might really say Carlisle
Was she still alive for the 1921? What does that say?
You only say you don’t have the deaths of Daniel and Dianah.
Do you have any other information? Marriage? Census?
Who were the witnesses at Mary Ann’s marriage?

Could this be the family in 1881
Daniel Melon Head Married Male 42 1839 General labourer Ireland
Dinah Melon Wife Married Female 32 1849 Wife England
Mary Melon Daughter - Female 13 1868 Scholar England
John Melon Son - Male 9 1872 Scholar England
Daniel Melon Son - Male 0 1881 - Lochee, Forfarshire (Angus), Scotland
If so, perhaps this is Daniel born 1881’s birth??

Scottish birth certificates show the date & place of parent’s marriage. Or at least, they should. I’ve known them to be wildly fabricated. It would be good to know if both these births gave the same information. See reply #4

Marriages.
There are these names on same page I can’t help wondering about.
Marriages Sep 1866 (>99%)
McGUCKAN Daniel Carlisle 10b 630
SHERRTON Dinah Carlisle 10b 630
SMITH Ann Carlisle 10b 630
YATES John Carlisle 10b 63

Dinah Mallon's other surname is indexed as Haddington! See screenshot. The certificate should tell you her husband's name and whether or not he was still alive.
Could Daniel have died in Glasgow? See second screenshot.
Was Dinah born in Carlisle? See third screenshot. Mother's maiden surname is Routledge.

I reckon Dinah in Carlisle too Forfarian
There is a baptism Burgh by Sands 27 May 1849, daughter of Robert & Ann Sherrington
From census & births it seems Ann was Ann ROUTLEDGE and born in Scotland
Cannot readily find a marriage for Robert & Ann

Re Daniel’s death

In 1871
Daniel, Dinah & Mary are in Botchergate, Carlisle and their surname is MELVILLE!
So..this birth. Perhaps.
MELVIN, MARY ANN MMN SHERRINGTON
GRO Reference: 1869 M Quarter in CARLISLE Volume 10B Page 441
And this might be John who was in the 1881 census
MELVILLE, JOHN SHERRINGTON
GRO Reference: 1871 S Quarter in CARLISLE Volume 10B Page 449
Added to say, the 1871 Daniel says he was born Tyrone, but it is dittoed from the Irish family next door, so care needed there.

Thank you for all the advice.. Regards the questions....
Mary Ann Millan and William Webster's witnesses were Colin Webster his brother and Elizabeth Keough... no relation as far as I can tell...
see Extract attached...
Referencing the potential other sibilings...these are definitly worth pursuing...
as I have a reference Scotland, Civil Registration, 1855-1875, 1881, 1891
for Frank Melen 26 May 1875 lochee mothers name Sherrington and Daniel Millen 13 Dec 1880 with mother's name being Shemington although SP lists it as SHERRINGTON
but the rr may have been mistranscribed as a 'm'...
I think your are also right on the 1881 census record which I will also chase up.....
I will also get the 1883 DC for MALLON DINAH 282 / 5 / 103 Lochee which would fit dates for the children..and thanks Forfarian ...DC for Daniel Millen... 1889 which I will also chase up...
Many thanks once more and will update once I get these records...
Regards

I was hoping a witness to the marriage might have been her brother John.
I can’t find what happened to him.

Hello again
Mystery partially solved ... I think...
mckha489 and Forfarian thanks again for all the leads.. running down these below, possible
Death of Daniel.......I am afraid these both were dead ends see below...
MULLEN DANIEL 42 MCMAHON M 1884 644 / 1 / 1017 Bridgeton
1884 12th Oct Daniel Mullen 42 No Relation as wife's name different Steamship Stocker
MILLEN DANIEL 44 DALY 644 / 14 / 417 KINNING PARK
1889 1st Sept Daniel Millen 44 No Relation as wife's name different Ship Steward
-------------------------------------------
Regarding the DC of Dinah Mallon, this appears to be the correct based supposition, namely
Death 1883 5th April Dinah Mallon 34 South Road [No Number] Mary Ann Mallon (Daugther) Signed with a 'x' Consumption (3 Months)
of Great Great Grandmother Est Year of Birth 1849 Age at time 15
although as you pointed out the MS was listed as Haddington...but with no forenames or MS...
Given that Mary Ann appears to be quite young and illiterate she would have little in the way of pointing this error out at the time....
In addition when she married in 1889 her husbands address was 11 Union Place Lochee... and on her brother's DC she lists this address was listed against the informant..
Death 1890 29th April Daniel Mellon 9 11 St Mary's Lane Daniel Mellon [Labourer] & Dinah Mellon MS Sherrington Gastric Debility, 21 days Mary Ann Mellon (Sister) Signed with a 'x' 11 Union Place, Lochee Est Year of Birth 1881
Also regarding the use of the name Melville.. on the marriage certificate of one of their son's my great grandfather 1927 this is listed as MS of his mother Mary Ann...
It would appear that the names changed over time from Mellon, Millan, Melon, Melville...
Looking into the Etymology of Mellon... I found this..
Mellon : 1: Irish (Ulster): variant of Mallon.2: English (Lancashire; of Norman origin): habitational name from Meulan in Seine-et-Oise now known as Meulan-en-Yvelines.3: Scottish (Lanarkshire; of Norman origin): variant of Melville.
As a Northern Irish surname, from Ó Mealláin, a name formed from a diminutive of meall (“pleasant”).
Also looked for John as you suggested mckha489 but also no luck for any marriages or DC..
So I will have to continue looking for Daniel's and John's DC when I have time to...
Thanks again for all the advice,
Regards

Regarding the two deaths for Daniel,
Did you cross reference the wives to see if your Daniel possibly married after the death of Dinah?
What did Dinah’s death cert say about Daniel?
Similarly does Daniel juniors death cert indicate both parents deceased?
-
Hello mckha489
1881 Census has Daniel Mellon aged 41
1884 DC for Daniel Mullen has aged 42 and occupation of Steamship Stoker
1889 DC for Daniel Millen has aged 44 and occupation of Ship Steward...
so ages do not align for his remarrying or occupations
Daniel's Mellon DC has both parents deceased 1890
Thanks for the suggestion though

If you ever get that possible marriage certificate (reply #4) please share it.
I’ve been going down a rabbit hole of a previous marriage for Daniel and really must back out before it caves in on me!

I will do.. very sad for my great grandmother losing her brother's so young, her father when she was 14, her mother at 15 and with two brother's to look after... must have been very difficult for her...
People nowadays no idea what people had to endure before the welfare state... .
I know what you mean about rabbit holes... I have had a few of these myself during family history research..
all the best
