Title: Gravesend Shipping Question
Post by: Syd R on Friday 28 February 25 01:36 GMT (UK)

Shipping report on the voyage of the Waipara 1911 states sea was very rough from Gravesend to the Burlings.

Could SKS give an explanation waht is or the location of the Burlings?

Any suggestions appreciated

The Burlings were what British seamen used to call the Berlengas islands off the coast of Portugal but I don't know if that voyage went in that direction?

Thanks could clear it up .
The report reads" Very good voyage out with the exception of the passage from Gravesend down to the Burlings where the sea was very rough"

What other route is there?

The first part of any voyage UK-Aus is Bay of Biscay, Spanish/Portuguese coast.
Then Med and Suez, or Africa and Cape of Good Hope.

I didn't know it was going to Australia. I just read Gravesend to The Burlings and remembered the part I had heard about sailors calling them that so posted to help.

Thanks everyone
The voyage was to Brisbane via Suez.
So for me the Burlings mystery is solved.
