Title: Rootschatters in the past
Post by: Familysearch on Tuesday 25 February 25 17:21 GMT (UK)
Just wondering how to search for past Rootschatters.

realising that quite a few that have helped me in the past no longer seem to post these days

Do you mean in the real world or here on the site?

Just wondering how many rootschatters there have been ove the years....anyone know?
And most use a pseudonym anyway, sensible people!

That's a lot of users! I could only find the bit with how many are currently online, just over 2000.

But does anyone actively "leave" Rootschat?

A few people over the years (a very small portion) have left for good but most probably disappear through death or ill-health.

aghadowey - guess you're right.

I started on Rootschat when the old bbc site was stopped. Just lately a few names came up into my mind and I wondered what happened to them - hence the reason for my question. (Maybe the names are not even correct!!)

You could try looking back at some of you oldest topics and see who relied with information or suggestions.

Also - if you recall their User Name - input that into the Search Box at the top of the screen - posts they have been involved in should show up.

THEN - click on their user name to see their profile. That will show when they were last 'active' on the site.

I'd use the search feature towards the top of the site, just below the poppies but you can Google Rootschat and then the member username such as "Rootschat".

Some regular Rootschatters have passed away, such as Guy.

I had already suggested using the Search Feature - but there was no response from the original poster, so I don't know whether they tried it or not.

It was the BBC Message Boards - History.  I have some things printed off dated 2006.

I had tried "search" but no success.  Not everyone kept the same name.  I think Dee was on the BBC board.

Sadly with time comes loss. You can't have the joys and pleasant memories without it, can you? I've not been on here that many years, but have delightful memories of the many who help, with advice, information especially technical and on research, and even how to shrink photos enough to use on here.
Who can forget the splendid silliness of the "Cats" threads over the years, with its creative spelling - although recently that thread seems to have changed character, and become nastier - and of course the wonderful "Panto" efforts, again delightfully daft, although sadly lapsed!
I have sunk many a bottle of "Yellow Tail" over the decades, but never presumed to join in that select group actively, rather watched from afar.
We may all be becoming rather more mature, but we are what our memories make us, building us over time.
Like others I have some very fond memories. Long may they last.

Dee is not too well so doesn't come on the Photo Gallery thread anymore.  We still e-mail about once a year.

Tony H was a wonderful help to me in finding my Hurst ancestors' graves in Rochdale Cemetery, even making trips there to take photos of their gravestones.  He also helped me with other family history matters.  Nothing was too much trouble for him, but sadly he died several years ago.  I feel he deserves honourable mention for all his efforts and for his fun answers.

Some Rootschatters start fine and many out of politeness want to help, but a few turn out to be parasites. Several years ago one became very demanding and totally ignored house rules, so eventually his posts were monitored and he chose to leave. Unfortunately, I had told him the village where I lived. Had he paid a visit, I am 6ft 5ins, built like a brick poo-house and can handle myself. Others have helped me, so I help others; that is the way it should be. If someone has helped you, please repay that by helping someone else.

It’s only one person (cat) who has changed the character. As a non-contributor, I have wondered if anything could be done about it.

All those mentioned are sorely missed on here.

But as most of us come to genealogy later in life that is just the reality that we will likely pass away.

I have instructed me Daughter if that is the case and its sudden she will notify other Chatters and Management.

I have been a member for donkeys years,  the only way I will leave is if I become  incapacitated  and not able to use it.

I joined here after I had an experience with another board, I was quite happy there till someone was out and out rude to me for no reason,  the mods on the board intervened,  they did me a favour

And I am off to Essex for a few days tomorrow to do some serious genealogy at Southend Library local studies and genealogy section. The old fashioned way is still one of the best ways.

Guy who is now sadly gone said he started his genealogy very, very, young at just 4 or 5 in about 1954, so he was interested for a very young age.

I was a regular for several years and had some fantastic help from many people. But things change and more recently genealogy hasn't been my main priority, so I don't post very often now, though I do check in fairly regularly just to see if anyone has posted in any of my areas of interest.

I was a regular YTGer and also posted photographs in the Tea Room. I made a number of friends, some of whom I still see on Facebook. I think that some of those people are no longer active in here but it's good to keep up with them in other ways.

I tell myself that I can always come back if I suddenly have the time to devote to finding more about my long lost ancestors. It has always been a very friendly and helpful group, so long may it last!    :) :) :)

I’ve been a RC for 10 years and over that time had help and advice from many people.. it’s one of the friendliest sites I’ve used and throughout covid the daily diaries helped many of us… and still does.

I recognise some of the names others have mentioned and sad to see those no longer here.. but as we all get older it’s an inevitability.
The panto was great fun to be involved with…

Support and virtual friendship for one another is great and long may it continue.

Sometimes people give vague info in their requests and they need to be asked to provide more info, if ever I post a lookup request for a person or family I often say in the OP "if you need any more info just ask".

I also like to help others as well, and use the approaches I use for my own family tree in aiding others. And I occasionally research famous people, I think several genealogists have sometimes looked into family trees of famous people.

I am doing some research into the very early life of Columbo actor Peter Falk, one of my fave ever TV actors, and thanks to the new Manhattan voters lists on Ancestry I found his parents Michael and Madeline Falk in the Oct 1928 and Oct 1930 registers at Upper West Side, Manhattan, and in 1928 they were with Madeline's parents Peter and Rose Hochauser at 220 West 93rd Street. By Oct 1930 they were at 680 West End Street, just a 2 minute walk from 220 West 93rd Street. It was not until about 1933/1934 that Peter moved to Ossining, NY in NY State. The absence of the Falk family in the April 1930 census made it harder for me to find out more about his early life, apart from the well known fact he had his right eye removed at 3 years old due to cancer, and was born in New York in Sep 1927.

It’s quite fascinating looking up well known people …. My daughter lives in Blondin Ave, the next road is Niagara Ave… it piqued my interest and sure enough Charles Blondin and family lived there for 11 years in the late 1800’s.
His house was actually built opposite The Plough ( established in 1700’s) and some of the surrounding roads were named after him along with Blondin park that is held by the council and includes a nature reserve, allotments. The whole area was originally an orchard…
My grandson assisted me when we looked up the census and 1939 register to see who’d originally lived in their house.. he was quite enthused with it all so hopefully a budding genealogist in the making!
Bit of a digression from the original subject but hey ho!

Yes Guy was brilliant, probably one of the most knowledgable, I think he was involved in FreeBMD? Very sadly missed. Also Roy Stockdill who passed away some years ago who contributed to a lot of genealogy publications and this forum. I occasionally find a Stockdill or variant in my searches, and wonder if Roy had found that one :).
