Anyone know if there are burials at the above church? It has now been demolished. Or where any burials in the area might be?
I'm looking for burials to narrow down a death for Laura Roberts, who was a widow, aged 70y, 9m in 1921, living at 9 New Street, Portmadog. Her son Ellis John Roberts died in 1914 in Glaslyn Street, Portmadog. He was married to Martha Evans (then Roberts, then Parry), who, a newspaper clip suggests, was the caretaker of the above church for 40 years hence the search (and it appears to be close to both New Street and Glaslyn Street).
They are proving to be a hard family to research, not helped by the fact that they appear to be non-conformists. I've only found one marriage mentioned in the papers (at the register office) and no baptisms or parish marriages.
Many thanks,
Deirdre

The map doesn't show a graveyard/burial ground around the Church - 1913

Thanks hanes teulu, found it on a map but didn’t equate the size of the plot with room for burials 🙄

This mentions a "field" opposite the church -

Thanks again, these newspapers give such detail, great when you find someone you’re looking for. Have searched the addresses as well as the names, but need to try again.

Hi
Had problems recently trying to send reply - seems OK now.
Burials are in Moel y Gest Cemetery (Gwynedd Council), on the outskirt of Porthmadog (Portmadoc) off the Porthmadog to Criccieth & Pwllheli road. It's on the left, out of sight - single track road near end of 40 mph section.
Transcription in GWYNEDD FAMILY HISTORY publication M 081 Part 1 has number of errors.
Inscription is in Welsh, corrected info.
John Roberts, 9 New St. Portmadog died 28/04/1914 aged 63
Also his Wife Laura, died 29/09/1921 aged 71
AND their daughter Ann Jane, died 14/05/1910 aged 28
Thomas, their son drowned Newfoundland aged 17yrs
Thomas was an Ordinary Seaman on a Porthmadog sailing ship when he drowned. It's recorded in Deaths at Sea Register.
Censuses before 1901 they were living in Llandegwnning and Llanengan Parishes, between Pwllheli and Aberdaron.
Which Censuses have you got info for ?

Thanks EmyrBorth, that's really helpful. I've actually now got (what I believe) is all except the 1871 censuses for Laura, though the early ones are a puzzle, as is the whole family.
She appears to have been born in Aberech as Laura Rowlands, daughter of William and Ann (nee Jones), but recorded as Laura Rowland in Llanengan in 1851, and as Lowry Owen at Cefn Coch, Llandegwning in 1861, with parents William and Ann Owen, and siblings all listed as Owen. I had the parents and several children (but not Laura) in 1871, all recorded with the surname Williams, still at Cefn Coch. William and Ann were living there (as Williams) until their deaths in 1905 and 1907 (William died at 9 New Street, buried at Llandegwning).
Are you able to tell me if John and Laura's son Ellis John Roberts (died 1914 at 2 Glaslyn St, Portmadog), and his wife Martha died in 1944 (then married to Edward Parry), and their daughter Laura Augusta (died 1932) are buried there too (I like to tidy things up if i can :) )
I've been trying to trace all William and Ann's children in the hope of finding out which of their daughters (at least 6) was the mother of William, who was aged 5 in 1891, living with his grandparents at Cefn Coch. Several of the daughters appear to have had children but were not married, so a bit of a needle in a haystack.
Again, many thanks, Deirdre

Just ordered Laura's death certificate, thanks again :)

Hi
Yes Ellis John Roberts is buried there according to GFHS. Missed it because the inscription appears to be just Ellis Roberts. I'll check it out later this afternoon and get back to you tonight or tomorrow morning.

Great thanks; birth was registered as Ellis Jones Roberts, and varied as Ellis, Ellis John and Ellis J in other records.

That’s brilliant Emyr thanks. Out with dogs at the moment but will digest when home.

Thanks so much Emyr, thanks to you i have more details than i ever expected on Laura given her name changes. And a granddaughter (Lettie) i didn’t know about. Not sure i’ll manage to find out which of her sisters is the mother of the William I’m researching (my husband’s great grandfather).
Local knowledge is wonderful, as is the help given here.
